My mother will be having hip replacement surgery. What can we expect post-surgery? What will her rehab look like? Are there questions I should ask about the physical therapy and occupational therapy? Thank you.

Hello James! Post-surgery for hip replacements can depend on many different factors such as your mom's physical health and strength prior to surgery. Having her start a pre-surgery exercise program is sometimes helpful. Aside from that, her rehab post-surgery MIGHT consist of leg and possibly arm strengthening, walking training with a walker, cane, or other device, or no device at all, as well as stair climbing training and balance training. She may be able to go straight home, or may need extended rehab at a short term setting, such as a skilled nursing facility. She may also be in pain after the surgery, depending on her tolerance and use of the provided pain medication. The best question to ask is how often will she have therapy, and how long are her treatments. You want to make sure she gets all she needs and can handle to help her recover quickly and correctly. Hope I helped! Best of luck with the surgery!
