Akamai Recovery Maui Focus:

Substance Abuse

Substance Abuse Treatment Centers focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Opiate Addiction

Opiate Addiction Treatment Centers specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Alcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Dual Diagnosis/Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person’s mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

What does Akamai Recovery Maui offer?

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

This three hour, three days per week group program is designed for the client with a diagnosis of alcohol or other drug dependency and assessed as needing a highly structured program to support the recovery process. Often this client will have had previous treatment. Multiple life problems including more than one arrest, employment, health and relationship issues are present. The client may also have significant denial of the presence of an alcohol or other drug problem. Emphasis is placed on reducing denial, motivation the client to accept help from recovery support, and the attainment of life skills such as communication, decision making, relaxation, etc. Individual treatment is part of this program. The initial time commitment is twelve weeks; clinical review with client determines completion date.

Outpatient (OP)

A treatment program for clients with an alcohol or drug dependency diagnosis that meets once or twice per week in a three hour session. Generally, the client will have had no prior treatment services, will have an external support system that is conductive to or tolerant of the recovery process and will have sufficient coping strategies to abstain in a less structured program. Emphasis is on reducing denial of the alcohol or other drug problem, increasing positive coping skills, which will assist with abstinence after discharge, and the avoidance of another alcohol or other drug related arrest or problem. Individual sessions are a part of this program. The average length of this program is twelve weeks.

Treatment Types:

Individualized Treatment

Certain drug and alcohol rehab centers have standard treatment regimes they expect all patients to follow. Others offer individualized treatment, meaning they tailor treatment to a person’s specific background and needs. For example, a rehab facility may adjust a treatment program to take into account the type of drug or addiction from which the person suffers, their age, medical condition(s), religious beliefs, or lifestyle.

12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Family Program

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Aftercare Support

This group program is designed to provide support to those clients who have experienced a relapse after a period of abstinence. Clients in this program identify themselves as having an addiction and have established a recovery program in the past. Each enrolled client is offered an individual treatment program on a case-by-case basis.

Therapies Offered:

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Life Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Akamai Recovery Maui Highlights:

The assessment provides a comprehensive overview of the client and his/her problems. Assessment includes the alcohol and other drug history, including past treatment or efforts to abstain, functioning in the areas of family, employment, health, mental health, legal, social and other life areas. Strengths available to support the recovery process, client motivation for recovery, and ability to abstain from alcohol and other drugs on an outpatient basis are also assessed. Upon completing of the assessment, an Individualized Treatment Plan is developed. The plan is based on the results of the assessment and establishes the goals for treatment. The client is encouraged to participate in the development of the treatment goals and the treatment plan.
Akamai Recovery Maui also offers Day Treatment. This group program is designed for maximum support to assist those clients who appear to need a higher level of care than intensive outpatient. These clients meet the criteria for IOP, may have multiple treatment episodes, and may benefit from increased individual attention and more intensive group therapy. This program offers many of the benefits of residential treatment and can be comparable in services and effectiveness. Day treatment programming is provided from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Clients return to their living arrangement during evenings and weekends. Such treatment costs less than residential and often is more suitable for people with jobs or extensive social supports. Also, perhaps a client transitions out of a residential program, yet still needs more structure and support than IOP. The initial length of this program is six weeks (30 treatment days). Clinical staffing offers continued care recommendations at that time.
