Jacob's Ladder

Jacob’s Ladder at Brookside Farm is a mindfulness-based, residential recovery program for young men, situated in a private and majestic farming community. Jabob's Ladder includes wilderness adventure therapy into their holistic addiction treatment program to assist young men with overall recovery.

Jacob's Ladder Focus:

Substance Abuse

Substance Abuse Treatment Centers focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Alcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

What does Jacob's Ladder offer?

24 Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it’s important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Residential (inpatient) Treatment

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatment Types:

Individualized Treatment

Certain drug and alcohol rehab centers have standard treatment regimes they expect all patients to follow. Others offer individualized treatment, meaning they tailor treatment to a person’s specific background and needs. For example, a rehab facility may adjust a treatment program to take into account the type of drug or addiction from which the person suffers, their age, medical condition(s), religious beliefs, or lifestyle.

12-Step

At Jacob's Ladder, 12 step programs are one of many aspects of our substance abuse and addiction treatment program. Residents attend four AA or NA meetings a week and complete step work throughout their experience. All residents receive a copy of The Big Book and Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions on arrival. They offer a full library of addiction recovery content and publications that are assigned throughout their recovery journey.

Family Program

Jacob’s Ladder believes that their residents deserve a family that is educated about the disease that will be managed as part of a lifelong recovery. It is an important element in an overall recovery program that is often overlooked by other programs. Jacob’s Ladder implements a family therapy program to educate families on addiction, and more importantly to facilitate family counseling necessary for establishing appropriate relationships for family connection in the future.

Therapies Offered:

Holistic Therapy

Rather than focusing solely on addiction, holistic therapy facilities treat patients in terms of their whole being. Holistic therapy is about more than just addiction and sobriety – it addresses the person’s life in its entirety, including career, physical, familial, and spiritual aspects.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Individual Therapy

Our residents have weekly focused mentoring sessions with their primary counselor. Clinical therapies will be recommended after initial assessments and arranged as necessary. Counseling sessions will be individually customized and will address the current needs of the individual based on self-progress and also will take Jacob's Ladder's staff assessments under consideration.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Experiential Therapy

Their residents come to us having lived dramatic and addicted lives. They have often abandoned activities which they once enjoyed; sports, outdoors, relationships, hobbies, etc. The word “fun” is synonymous with using drugs and alcohol, as they have attended to little else for some time. Here at Jacob’s Ladder, they have learned that including wilderness adventure therapy into their holistic addiction treatment program assists young men with overall recovery and becoming an active participant in the community. In early sobriety life seems lackluster and the thought of not using forever seems boring, daunting and maybe impossible. In addition to letting go of the need for chemicals we are also asking our guests to let go of dramatic living, compulsive behaviors, codependent relationships (which are often dramatic and exhilarating) and many other maladaptive ways of living. This is the mission of the Jacob's Ladder wilderness therapy program. It is to “recover” that which was lost in addiction.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Creative Arts Therapy

The Jacob's Ladder community shares a passion for music and art. There are valuable lessons, therapeutic outcomes, and opportunities for life long, healthy activities to emerge from a complementary music and arts program for substance abuse program. The Jacob's Ladder studios include music instruments and production equipment, as well as painting and art studios where their guests will explore known and unknown talents. Under direction of their Music and Art Coordinator, structured and facilitated lessons will relate their studio experience to a life of enlightened recovery.

Jacob's Ladder Highlights:

From the cleansing waters of the creek, to the high vistas where eagles and hawks soar, we strive to wisely use the wide array of resources the earth provides. To preserve the beauty of the 100+ acres of rolling pastures and forest, they carefully work the land with a healthy respect. An active, working farm often resembles a life of recovery. Residents will help with livestock (cows, lambs and sheep, chickens, etc.) including: feeding, herding, and relocation, hygiene and general care, hay baling and storage, firewood collection and fence repair and management.
A typical "day on the ladder" includes daily chores, morning and evening meditation, mindful farming, lecture/education, step work, structured free time, 12-step meetings, and Jacob’s Ladder Community Meetings. Once or twice weekly, off site recreation, recreation therapy and individual, group and/or family therapy should be expected. Wilderness adventure therapy is also an important aspect to their programming, as it provides naturally exciting experiences that proves that substances are not needed to have fun.
