Serenity Acres is a world-class inpatient addiction treatment center located just outside of Annapolis, Maryland. Serenity Acres proves both traditional and holistic therapies, in order to heal the whole person - body, mind, and spirit.

Serenity Acres Focus:

Substance Abuse

Substance Abuse Treatment Centers focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Opiate Addiction

Opiate Addiction Treatment Centers specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Alcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Dual Diagnosis/Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment

Dual Diagnosis refers to someone suffering from both a drug or alcohol addiction and a co-occurring mental illness, such as bipolar disorder or depression. They treat many patients with co-occurring disorders such as bi-polar disorder, depression, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, as well as many others. At Serenity Acres their treatment includes traditional and holistic therapies that will allow each patient to find multiple ways to cope with their unique needs and challenges and to go on to live a full and healthy life. Serenity Acres has an excellent relationship with many leading dual diagnosis professionals and provides treatment with those professionals to their patients who have a dual diagnosis.

Rehab Services:

Psychotropic Medication

Psychotropic medications (aka psychodynamic medication) are any medicines used specifically to affect and/or alter a patient’s mind, emotions, and behaviors. Such psychiatric medicines are often used to change chemical levels in the brain that impact a person’s mood and behavior. These medications include mood stabilizers, antidepressants, anti-ADHD drugs, and anti-anxiety medications.

What does Serenity Acres offer?

Medically Assisted Detox

At Serenity Acres Treatment Center, they are equipped to help their clients to detox from drug and alcohol addiction in a comfortable, medically-supervised environment. At Serenity Acres, medical practices and holistic therapies are both applied to detox treatment, so that clients are as comfortable as possible during this process.

24 Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it’s important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand. Serenity Acres has a licensed medical team on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to ensure clients are given a safe environment in which to detox and recover.

Residential (inpatient) Treatment

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatment Types:

Individualized Treatment

Although addiction has common characteristics and behavior patterns associated with it, each person suffering from addiction is unique and should be treated as such. Because addiction is often caused by underlying emotional or mental issues, they treat not only the addiction, but the underlying causes. This creates a new way for their patients to see life and their role in the world. The types of therapies and treatments that are provided are individually designed for each patient to ensure that they are getting the most effective care for their particular needs. We do not follow a “cookie cutter” approach to treatment like most treatment centers.

12-Step

At Serenity Acres, they introduce clients to Twelve Step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Chemically Dependent Anonymous. Through participation in these programs, clients build a network of sober and supportive friends, learn the principles for remaining substance free, and promote sobriety through helping other addicts.

Family Program

Their staff appreciates the importance of family dynamics and encourages family sessions. If family dynamics are not part of the treatment plan, then a successful discharge may become difficult for the family and the patient. Both the patient and the family members typically have deep hurt, anger, resentment and individual triggers. When these issues are left untouched during treatment, both the patient and the family members will not be able to process emotions that are vital to treatment results and forgiveness.

Aftercare Support

At Serenity Acres, they believe that what happens when you leave treatment is just as important as what happens while you are there. From the day each client arrives, their therapists work with them to come up with a comprehensive aftercare plan, including sober living options, healthy lifestyle changes, and continuing mental health care.

Therapies Offered:

Holistic Therapy

Serenity Acres provides treatment for imbalances in the body and mind, and focuses on helping maintain a healthy lifestyle free of addiction. Holistic simply means “holism” or being “whole”. Their team of specialized addiction treatment professionals are well-versed in the use of therapeutic Eastern and Western remedies to facilitate recovery from addiction.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, is a widely accepted form of treatment for substance abuse disorders, and is incredibly effective when combined with other treatment modalities. CBT is a short-term, focused therapeutic approach to helping clients become abstinent from drugs and alcohol by using the same learning processes that the person initially used to develop dependence. CBT is based on the idea that feelings and behaviors are caused by a person’s thoughts, not outside stimuli like people, situations and events. People may not be able to change their circumstances, but they can change how they think about them and therefore change how they feel and behave.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a system of therapy that combines standard cognitive-behavioral techniques for emotion regulation and reality-testing with concepts of distress tolerance, acceptance, and mindful awareness largely derived from Buddhist meditative practice. Through DBT, the patient is taught to accept the presence of uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and calmly work through them, rather than resorting to self-destructive behaviors.

Individual Therapy

At Serenity Acres, they provide their clients with a higher level of individual counseling than any other facility in the area. Clients are assigned to both an addictions counselor and a mental health counselor, and have a minimum of 5 individual therapy sessions per week. They believe that these sessions are where the individual truly begins to heal.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Group Therapy

One of the most comforting realizations for most of our clients is the fact that they are not alone, and that others have shared many of the same feelings and experiences that they have. Male- and female-specific group therapy sessions, led by a licensed therapist, are offered several times per day Monday through Friday. These group sessions provide clients with a safe environment in which to explore tools and techniques relevant to recovery and relapse prevention methods. The chance to recreate situations and difficulties that contributed to their addiction is an invaluable part of the recovery process. These sessions also help clients to build communication skills and foster a sense of community. Group topics vary from session to session, but are all intended to provide the clients with a more thorough understanding of their own addiction, remove the sense of isolation, and give them a better foundation for lasting recovery.

Equine Therapy

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

Experiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional “talk therapy” by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Animal Therapy

Animal therapy (aka pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy) can be very healing, as it allows patients to bond with animals, who give unconditional love. This is particularly useful for those who suffered trauma by the hands of people, who may be able to trust and form closer attachments to animals than humans at certain stages of rehabilitation.

Serenity Acres Highlights:

The multidisciplinary team model enables the staff to focus on the whole person by focusing on all aspects of a patient’s life. Upon admission to Serenity Acres, the combination of issues that has led to their current state becomes abundantly clear as the initial days pass. The multidisciplinary approach provides the team with the ability to create treatment plans specific to each patient.
Life at Serenity Acres is designed to feel as natural as possible. The atmosphere is family-oriented and a sense of community is continuously fostered. The living arrangements are comfortable, relaxed, and designed to allow patients to relax and let down their walls so they can get into their recovery quickly and fully. Patients are introduced to new or abandoned recreational activities, they learn to live and communicate with others, and they leave treatment with a solid plan on how to continue their recovery.
Their team is licensed by American Board of Addiction Medicine, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and others. Each member of their team is a leader in their field and each brings experience, insight, and empathy to our patients.
Serenity Acres’ facilities in Crownsville, MD, are situated in an ideal location for recovery. While the residential facilities are secluded enough to eliminate the distractions that come from busier city areas, recreational activities(hyperlink), and twelve step meetings are only a short drive away. The proximity of Serenity Acres to several large recovery communities (Annapolis, Baltimore, and Washington, DC) also provides an excellent basis for developing a solid network in sobriety following clients’ stay with us.
