About the Facility
The Providence Center is a mental health and addiction treatment center offering inpatient and outpatient programs for men and women in Providence, Rhode Island. They provide community resources, psychiatric services, addiction treatment programs, and aftercare support.
Addiction and mental health-related services offered at The Providence Center include clinical assessments and comprehensive treatment planning for substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders, psychosocial treatments, residential programs, outpatient treatment programs, counseling, community referrals, psychopharmacological interventions (medication-assisted treatment), and aftercare.
Assessments help to identify symptoms of substance use disorders and/or co-occurring mental health conditions, like anxiety, and the severity. Oftentimes patients may need stabilization or can move straight into treatment, which may include individual counseling, group therapy, psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, skill development, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, family counseling, and medication management.
The outpatient clinic treats addiction and/or other co-occurring conditions. The program includes a thorough clinical assessment, individualized treatment planning, individual and group therapy, the opportunity to see a psychiatrist and receive medication management, relapse prevention techniques, skill building for insight and recovery, and connections to community recovery supports. Sessions are held several days per week, depending upon the individual’s circumstances. Services offered are separated by gender. The women’s outpatient program also includes pregnancy and postpartum support.
The Providence Center – Men’s Road to Recovery is a substance use disorder treatment program specifically for men. Patients work with clinicians to develop individualized treatment plans and then engage in evidence based therapies to treat addiction and mental health conditions, like motivational interviewing, individual and group counseling, psychoeducation, and relapse prevention.
The Providence Center – Women’s Recovery Program is designed to help women with substance use disorder regain control of their lives. Similar to the men’s program, therapies are individual and in groups and involve educational workshops and comprehensive aftercare planning. There are also pregnancy and postpartum services and childcare available.
Medicaid, commercial insurance, and self-pay are accepted. Financial aid options are also available.

Levels of Care
Medically Assisted Detox
In medically assisted detox, a team of medical professionals will be on hand 24/7 as your body is detoxing from addictive substances. As a result, you may experience physical and psychological side effects, such as mood swings, anxiety, nausea, or flu-like symptoms to help alleviate potential withdrawal symptoms, and keep you as safe and comfortable throughout this process.
Inpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
Aftercare Support
Recovery is possible when people are connected to supports after treatment—services that remove barriers that clients may face in achieving mental and physical wellness. These include peer recovery coaches who help people new to recovery navigate treatment, and wraparound services that provide assistance with finding safe and affordable housing, arranging consistent primary medical care or securing meaningful employment.
12-Step
12 step programs may be found both in addiction treatment centers and in the community, where meetings are anonymous, free, and open to the public. These programs presume that sustained recovery depends on spiritual, psychological, and emotional growth and healing. Religious affiliation isn’t required, but the 12 step recovery model is based on the belief in a higher power. Peer sponsors support participants as they use the steps to cultivate self-awareness, forgiveness, acceptance, and accountability.
Clinical Services
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.
Family Therapy
Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.
Individual Therapy
In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
Life Skills
Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
Nutrition Therapy
Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.
Trauma Therapy
Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.
