About CarolinaEast Medical Center

At CarolinaEast Medical Center located in New Bern, North Carolina you can find a wide range of medical services and behavioral health care. Admissions are accepted around the clock and referrals can be made by mental health and health care professionals, as well as family members and friends.

Treatment that Supports You Through Every Step

There are three main levels of treatment that can be determined based on an evaluation to best understand your current affliction. Inpatient psychiatric hospitalization provides 24 hour care and focuses on stabilizing a crisis before developing a further treatment plan. Treatment can help you learn about coping mechanisms, and medications may be prescribed or adjusted. Developing an aftercare plan is another important step that helps you return home and create a strong support system moving forward.

The partial hospitalization program (PHP) is on a less intense level if you do not require an inpatient stay. Treatment plans can include individual, group, and/or family therapy. Sessions are typically during the week and last four hours per day.

There is also an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for clients who need more support compared to outpatient therapy. This program focuses on helping understand your goals and treatment includes group therapy sessions. This can encourage safety and improve daily coping habits.

I should be shocked at the level of care, or lack thereof, my husband received in the Emergency Room. I would give 0 stars if I could. The only one thing good about this visit was the wait time and the intake nurse. He went in hardly able to walk being unable to put pressure on his one leg due to pain and swelling. He was given a pain pill, I presume, to be able to lay down to have an xray( He was unable to lay flat). He stated after that the xray was painful for him. The older woman in the xray room was rude with no compassion or understanding of the pain he was really in. She should not be working with patients. The PA, Taylor Huynh, should go back for more training. Not only for treating patients properly but her bedside manner. Besides the xray, he was never even physically examined for exactly where his pain was. The swelling is completely obvious. She wouldnt know that though because she did not even lay a hand on him. I was upfront with the intake nurse, who was wonderful, about the medication he was taking. Including the pain pills he was prescribed by his doctor up north. She treated my husband as if he was in there just to get pain meds. She, the PA, said she couldn't prescribe anything but a steroid because he already had pain meds. It was obvious the pills he was taking were not working. She made sure to say the date they were prescribed more than once. She had the attitude that she thought he was there to get medication. All he really wanted were answers as to why he had all this pain and unable to put pressure on his leg. We were very unhappy with the entire experience. This would have never of happened at our hospital up North. They would of tried to figure out exactly what was going on. I think it is pretty sad that there was no physical examination, and that nothing was done to figure out what where the pain was coming from. I should not be surprised at the poor care he received. I was told not to go to this ER due to their lack of care they administer. I dont know how the Emergency Room is able to still treat patients, not that they are actually treated. It needs to be completely revamped with new staff and new system on level of care. I would suggest to other patients to go elsewhere.

As a person who works in nursing I can honestly say the bedside manner in this place is atrocious. Staff is very rude . One of those places all about the money and not the actual care of patients.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Clients who are exiting detox or stepping down from intensive inpatient care typically transition directly into outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs are designed to allow clients to either re-enter or remain in their communities while receiving robust, personalized care. Many facilities offer evening, night, or weekend services to accommodate clients' home and work schedules. The most common outpatient treatment modalities include psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Often used as a "step-down" option after you've completed a residential or inpatient program, the partial hospitalization program (PHP) typically involves a minimum of 20 hours of treatment per week for approximately 90 days. Programs offer structured programming that includes relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy services. Insurance coverage for PHP treatment varies among insurance providers.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

If you've been smoking for a while, your body has become physically dependent on the addictive substance nicotine. To avoid unpleasant withdrawal as you quit smoking, you can use nicotine replacement therapy in North Carolina. This gives you controlled amounts of nicotine in the form of lozenges, inhalers, sprays, patches, or gum.

My dad was in New Bern visiting from several states away when he became very ill, very quickly. He received amazing care, from the ED, through surgical intervention, and everything in between. He was so impressed with the compassion, cleanliness, and overall sense of care that he experienced. My dad enjoyed talking with Jeffrey when he delivered food to his room. The staff at CarolinaEast also made sure my dad had everything he needed to travel back home when the time came, and set up communication for continuity of care back in his home town. Definitely recommend!

I had surgery at the Medical Center, and the staff were incredibly kind and compassionate. They put me completely at ease and made me feel like I was their only patient. They followed up with me after discharge to check on how I was doing and to get feedback on my experience. All of this was a stark contrast to my experience with another surgery I had the following month at a larger institution, where I felt like they couldn’t get me discharged fast enough.

Went in because I was showing serious signs of having parvovirus b19, I told them this and also told them I already got tested for Covid, flu and strep the day before, however I sat in there for 4-5 hours for them to not even have tested me for parvovirus at all. They retested for Covid and flu. I later find out I also have an upper respiratory infection by reading my discharge papers but the doctor said nothing to me about this.

I would put 0 stars if I could. My daughter was seen 5x at the emergency room for the same complaint. The 5th time she was told "oh yeah we seen that mass on a previous visit". They did not treat her pain. Just a bag of fluids and maybe she was lucky enough to get some nausea medicine. One time a paramedic came in feeling ill, and all the doctors and nurses were at his side. They were so quick to fix one of their own, they didn't check on anyone in 2 hours. How do I know this? With 4 patients sitting in these hospital chairs (they don't do beds), in an area that is no more than 15x15, there is no privacy. So now with a grim diagnosis, my daughter will have a long road ahead. But if the doctors and nurses truly cared about comfort, she would not be afraid to go back.

Came in and they took us back before we sat in the waiting room. The PA Ashley was absolutely amazing. She showed true compassion and empathy. She sat and listened to our issues and listened to our concerns. And the nurse Amanda was amazing as well. She did great with the IV and she explained everything completely to the T. Very happy with this experience.
