Yes. Physical dependence can develop within a few weeks of regular use, even when benzos are taken exactly as a doctor prescribes. Dependence is not the same as addiction, but it does mean stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal. People taking benzos long-term should talk with their prescriber about a planned taper rather than stopping on their own.
Yes, in some cases. Severe benzo withdrawal can cause seizures and other complications that are potentially life-threatening, especially for people on high doses, people with a history of seizures, and people who try to quit abruptly. Medically supervised tapering greatly reduces these risks.
There is no single “most addictive” benzo, but short-acting, fast-onset benzodiazepines like Xanax (alprazolam) tend to carry a higher misuse risk because the rapid effect and shorter duration encourage repeat dosing. Risk also depends on dose, length of use, and individual factors, and any benzo can lead to dependence with regular use.
