Priority Health is a nonprofit healthcare company based in Michigan. With more than 1.3 million members, it is the second largest healthcare insurer in Michigan.
Started in 1985 as Lakeshore HMO, in June 2024 Priority Health announced plans to acquire Physicians Health Plan of Northern Indiana, a company that serves 52,000 members. In June 2022, Priority Health also created an alliance with Cigna insurance to allow Cigna members to access Priority Health’s network in Michigan and for Priority Health members to access Cigna’s nationwide network when they are traveling outside of Michigan.
Priority Health also participates in community projects that improve the lives of the underserved residents of Michigan. One such project is a $600,000 Priority Health Foundation grant that helps eight nonprofit organizations provide free vaccines and expand food pantry access to older adults in Detroit, Michigan.
Does Priority Health Cover Addiction Treatment or Rehab?
Most Priority Health plans cover mental health and substance abuse treatment, as required by the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA). This law requires most insurance plans to cover 10 essential health benefits which include mental health and addiction treatment. Another law requires that mental health and substance abuse treatment must be available to members at the same level as other medical treatments.
However there are exceptions to the laws and insurance plans differ so you should check with the insurance company to get the details of your specific plan before you commit to a rehab program.
In addition, the type of treatment(s) your insurance covers will be based on your doctor’s assessment and the treatment plan they create. It’s important to work closely with your doctor so you get the care you need.

Skywood is amazing..IF YOU WANT IT. If you are looking for a new beginning and to find yourself and discover who you are again while learning about addiction and simultaneously get sober, this is the place. The food is amazing, its absolutely beautiful, and you are surrounded by strong staff and nature. The staff is amazing, starting from intake and all the way up to the doctors. BRIE the PA IS PHENOMENAL choose her. This is NOT a summer camp for your kids that are not ready for sobriety. If your young adult child really wants help, ok, remember no one can fix someone that doesn't want to get well, especially young adults.(18-25). This is a place to get better and to re-align with your spirituality, health, and values. 10/10 for anyone looking for a new and amazing version of effective treatment that is motivational, open to outdoors, and healthy. I learned more about myself in two weeks than I did in 8 years of following a different form of treatment. This is due to being rigorously honest, open minded, and wanting more than anything to be the best version of myself. Namasté, and good luck❤️🙏
Awesome place to go through recovery. In the 20 years I have been in recovery I have never experienced such a professional organized staff. They assist with medication, case work, are flexible with scheduling. They get you your meds right away at the facility and it's a great place to go to find the right path

The staff were very helpful, professional, and willing to meet clients where they’re at based on their own individual treatment needs. They were the only agency that I found in my area that believe in a dual diagnosis treatment model, which allows you to continue taking your mental health medications, while also getting help for SUD.

Journey Pure has a incredible team of staff, the best that I’ve ever seen, from an amazing Dr on site that cares and conforms to you and all your needs, along with a great staff of therapists, like Heather and Teeva; all the way down to everyone in the office that’s gets you started. They give personal care to everyone that walks in. This is the only place that I would go to without a doubt

Dr. Plumb has changed my life. There may not be many psychiatrists in traverse city but I’m fortunate enough to have DR. Rachel plumb as my doctor for 5 years now. I’m comfortable enough to tell her things i wouldn’t normally tell a psychiatrist. The front staff is incredibly helpful and supportive. I’m grateful for ATS.

I want to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible experience I had at this place. It’s the best place I’ve ever been to. There’s a therapist named Logan Paul who genuinely helps people with their sobriety. He’s not just about that; he also focuses on mental health. Logan will help you understand the key points of what you’re dealing with and how to overcome it. I usually don’t trust people, but Logan was the living proof. Thank you, Logan!

At the heart of what I love about River’s Bend is therapist Julia Greenbaum. I initially struggle to open up but she has met me where I’m at mentally and changed my life. Although the entire facility is professional and courteous, Julia takes her standard of care to places I have never seen the bar raised to before. Her methods are down-to-earth yet professional, her insights are relevant, her empathy is tangible, and she goes above and beyond to be there for her clients. Whether Julia is providing homework/resources for continuous growth outside of our sessions or pushing me to see beyond my present circumstance when we are talking, I always feel safe, respected, heard, and valued.
10/10 would recommend!!!

Social workers are great, therapists are great, nurse practitioners are great, this review is more for HEGIRA in general but their psych doctors are all disrespectful.will talk down to you, judge you from the very beginning, at least that's my experience with each new doctor I see and location I go to. They see I am prescribed Suboxone (have been for 5 plus years) and try to take me off of my psych meds I've been on for five years or longer.yes, one is a controlled substance but ive heard so many reasons why they won't or can't continue me on my medicine that I know works because I've been told multiple times completely different stories.it took years to find the right cocktail that works for me.only by the prescribing doctors do I ever have anything to complain about.i don't usually leave reviews for anything unless it's something I love or it's a genuine problem.i know plenty of people who are prescribed incredibly unnecessary amounts of drugs, or people with the same or similar combination I am on and don't have the problem i am having. opioid crisis I get it but not everyone taking them is abusing them.is the only way I'm going to get the same meds I've always been on by going to a shrink where I have to pay? I've seen plenty of doctors who weren't psych doctors but would still give me my psych meds with my Suboxone, yes things are different now more strict, but over the last two and a half years of trying to find a shrink to get my stuff from the right doctor , I haven't had a psych prescribe my psych meds to me In almost three years. My PCP and my Suboxone doctor help me by writing them as long as I show them I am trying to get in somewhere. So if it's perfectly fine for the doctors who really shouldn't be giving benzos scripts to me (psych meds were originally started from actual psychiatrist in the beginning) why in the EFF will absolutely no one help me?!?
I have been in the VA system for close to 20 years now. Started here in Clarksville in the Memorial Drive clinic, then moved out west for 6+ years and have since returned. The difference in quality of care here in Clarksville is just amazing. I though Las Vegas was good, well Clarksville just plain and simple has them beat. Great care, great people and almost no waiting. Top it off with Nashville and Ft Campbell medical facilities less than 1 hour away each and veterans are extremely well provided for. Well done!

My doctor is named Dr P Cook. This lady is God sent. She listens to me, she educate me about my records, my body and my mind. I really love this woman that I bring my daughters to my appointments so she can school them in their bodies. I really don’t know what I would do with out her. As a veteran and a black woman it hard to find a doctor that don’t wanna just shove pills down your throat but by the Grace of God she has been my doctor for years and I am truly Thankful

I have been in the VA system for 20 years at different locations. The clinic in Clarksville is by far the best. The staff are polite and professional. Sure, it might be busy and my appointment may not start exactly on time. However, every provider that I have encountered has never rushed me or not taken their due diligence to answer any questions that I have.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Priority Health Plans?
Priority Health offers a variety of plans including individual and family plans, plans that employers can offer employees, and coverage for those who qualify for Medicare or Medicaid.
You may have an individual or family plan from the state’s Insurance Marketplace or from your employer. There are two primary types of insurance. A preferred provider organization (PPO) plan lets you choose the doctor and the treatment facility you wish to use without a referral. You may even have some coverage for out of network providers. However the monthly premiums will be higher.
Health maintenance organization (HMO) plans offer the advantage of lower monthly premiums. But that advantage comes with less flexibility. You’ll need to choose a primary care provider to give you referrals to specialty treatment like addiction rehab, and you’ll also need to use an in network provider to get insurance coverage. As long as the network includes the doctors you prefer to use, an HMO can be a great way to save money.
Priority Health also offers Medicare plans for those who qualify. If you have Original Medicare you can get a Medicare Supplement plan to help you cover out of pocket expenses. Priority Health also has Medicare Advantage plans that fully replace Original Medicare. These plans have some additional benefits, such as vision and dental care, but you also will need to choose providers in the Advantage plan’s network.
Finally, Priority Health offers Medicaid plans, including MIChild, Children’s Special Health Care Services, and Healthy Michigan Plan. These plans offer additional benefits as well including help with transportation to medical appointments, care management, and virtual health visits.
What Inpatient Addiction Treatment Does Priority Health Cover?
Priority Health insurance coverage for inpatient addiction treatment will focus on care that is deemed medically necessary. To ensure coverage you should have a comprehensive treatment plan from your doctor.
Inpatient care is particularly important for those undergoing medical detox because it provides the necessary monitoring and safe environment you need as your body clears the drugs and alcohol from your system.
After detox you may move into a residential inpatient care facility to receive ongoing treatment and reduce the risk of a relapse. This treatment includes a very structured environment along with individual and group therapy to help you learn new habits and mindsets for sobriety.
What Outpatient Rehab Does Priority Health Cover?
There are several outpatient program options that your doctor might recommend. Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) allow you to receive addiction treatment during the day but you return to your home at night. PHPs often involve sessions that last 4 to 8 hours a day for three to four days a week. Thirty to 90 day programs are typical.
Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) often include 9 to 20 hours of treatment per week that are spread over 3 to 5 days. A total of 90 days of treatment is recommended.
In general outpatient programs (OPs) you might take part in sessions at a rehab facility once or twice a week. Group counseling and education on addiction and relapse prevention will typically be provided. When needed individual sessions may also be offered.
Priority Health also offers Teladoc — virtual mental health support — for free to its members. Formerly called myStrength Teladoc provides resources to help with stress and depression along with sleep problems and other issues that may be related to substance abuse. This service can help you create a personalized plan for mental wellness and provides the tools to help you follow that plan.
Does Priority Health Cover Methadone & Suboxone (MAT)?
Priority Health plans may cover medication-assisted treatment (MAT) plans that use methadone and Suboxone. MAT treats opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder by curtailing cravings and alleviating withdrawal symptoms which helps prevent relapse.
Along with the medication you’ll receive individual and/or group counseling to help you establish long-term recovery. Eventually you can taper off the medication and live truly substance-free.
Your coverage may vary depending on your specific plan. It’s important to get your full plan details so you can find out if you need a referral or preauthorization before you start treatment.
Does Priority Health Cover Other Mental Healthcare?
Most Priority Health plans cover other mental healthcare services. One program unique to Priority Health is Priority Pups which is a partnership with Canines for Change that places trained therapy dogs in local schools to help alleviate stress and anxiety for kids.
You may be able to get coverage for individual and group coverage to treat mental health issues such as depression or anxiety along with personality disorders and more.
It’s also common to have a mental health disorder alongside addiction concerns. This is known as a dual-diagnosis. If you have a dual-diagnosis it’s essential to get integrated care that addresses both your mental health and addiction. That’s the best way to help you achieve long term recovery.
