What is Online Drug Rehab?
Online drug rehab is also known as telehealth, telemedicine, virtual care, digital medicine, and e-health. It was originally developed to provide care for those who lived in remote areas and couldn’t access care, or for patients who had transportation or mobility challenges. It involves providing care remotely rather than in-person, using technology to deliver services.3
Today, online therapy and other telehealth options are available for a wide range of patients and situations, including substance use disorders. Telehealth treatment methods include:
- Telephone-based services
- Video conferences
- Video appointments
- Texting
- Virtual chats
- Smartphone apps
- Web-based tools
How Does Online Counseling Work?
Online counseling is similar to in-person therapy. You meet with a counselor and talk through life challenges and recovery issues. Online or telephone sessions usually take place weekly or bi-weekly, but you and your therapist will establish an agreed-upon schedule.
This type of counseling has become extremely common since the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, it offered the opportunity for people to connect with qualified professionals from the safety and convenience of their own home.
This option for online counseling was available pre-pandemic, but it exploded in popularity when so many people were unable to attend in-person counseling sessions. In 2019, only 21% of psychologists reported offering videoconferencing as an option, but by the fall of 2021, 96% said they were providing telehealth services.4
Since then, telehealth options for mental health and addiction treatment remain popular. Nearly three of every ten U.S. adults say they are using telehealth services more now than they did before the pandemic.
Methods continue to evolve, but some of the most common forms of telehealth used today include:
- Patient Portals: Patients can access web-based accounts that allow them to email their healthcare provider, review their health history, access test results, schedule appointments, and request prescription refills. These interactive portals are password protected and HIPAA compliant.
- Virtual Appointments: These online counseling sessions allow mental healthcare providers to deliver treatment through video conferencing. Patients log in to a site or call a video conferencing number to meet with the doctor or specialist virtually rather than in person.
What Issues Can Online Counseling Address?
Online counseling can address many topics, including online addiction treatment. It is also appropriate for treatment of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety, and to address concerns such as stress, bereavement, trauma, or relationship challenges.
What Issues Are Not Appropriate for Online Counseling?
While helpful in many circumstances, online counseling is not suitable for all situations. It is not recommended for the following conditions:1
- Suicidal thoughts
- Homicidal thoughts
- Severe substance use disorders
- Severe eating disorders
- Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
- Thought disorders that often include delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking (schizophrenia)
In-Person vs Virtual Outpatient Addiction Treatment
The main difference between online addiction treatment and in-person treatment is the communication method. Rather than meeting in a therapist’s office or at a rehab facility to communicate face-to-face, you will use a phone or other device to attend sessions online. During these virtual outpatient addiction sessions, you can see and hear the therapist (and other participants in group sessions), but you meet with them remotely from your home, or wherever you happen to be.
What Are Some of the Benefits of Online Rehab?
Online rehab offers multiple benefits for individuals who need treatment. Some of the advantages include:
- Rural access: Online addiction treatment allows rural communities to access quality treatment and practitioners.
- Reduced cost: Online rehab often costs less than outpatient addiction treatment. In some cases, virtual outpatient addiction treatment may cost the same as in-person services. However, you won’t have the cost of transportation or childcare, and virtual options may offer more scheduling flexibility, so you don’t have to miss work.
- Insurance coverage: Online addiction treatment is covered by most insurance providers.
- Convenience: You can meet with an online counselor to receive treatment from the convenience of your phone or computer, without traveling to a facility.
- Availability: While some professionals or specialists may not be available in your area, you can access more treatment providers nationwide through online rehab.
- Effectiveness: Research has shown that online counseling is as effective as in-person treatment. Specifically, regarding cognitive behavioral therapy, the National Center for Health Research reports, “There is no difference in patient satisfaction depending on whether therapy is online or in-person, and for either method of receiving therapy, the outcomes are better the more sessions someone attends.”2
Common Questions About Online Counseling
- How Often Will You See Your Therapist? It depends. The frequency of your sessions is generally determined by your unique needs and situation. You will work with your online counseling therapist to set up a schedule that works for both you and the therapist as well as your insurance coverage and budget.
- Can You Choose Your Own Therapist? Yes and no. It’s common for online therapy sites to match clients with an online counselor rather than asking you to choose a therapist. However, you can usually request to be rematched with a different therapist if you want to change for any reason.
- Will You Be Prescribed Medication? Possibly. While some online counseling sites have psychiatrists on staff who can diagnose and prescribe medication virtually, many do not. Mental health therapists (those who are not psychiatrists) are not qualified to diagnose clients online, and they are not licensed to prescribe medications.

Hello im Ashley and im an addict. My whole life has been filled with chaos and trauma. Some from my own doing and some that wasnt my fault. There is not a single bad word i can say abouy my experience at Beachway Therapy Center. My time there was cut short thanks to my own self-sabotaging behavior. Even then Beachway still treated me with compassion and the desire to help me. My situation was a unusual one. I came into the trauma program with a clean date of April 16th 2014. So at 11 years clean i was dealing with bipolar disorder, intense anxiety, a very unhealthy toxic relationship and an intense desire to break generational curses for my children. My history is one that involves homelessness, street drugs and a street mentality. Beachway took on the challenge of helping me work thru that trauma. I opened up to the program and other woman like never before. I had an amazing counselor, amazing case manager, and amazing staff that were there anytime i had moments of high anxiety or worry. I am so disappointed i ruined my chances of having a chance at going thru a trauma program with Beachway. Just in the short time i was there i did gain a small sense of self back. If you were like me and worry about making friends with the other clients because they wont understand you or like you, that is not even close to true. I found a sense of community that i couldnt find anywhere else in my life. If i manage to find a magic lamp, one of my wishes would definitely be used on looking young forever after that id wish to feel the peace and serenity i felt at Beachway. Thanks to them i had just enough courage to get me and my kids out of my bad situation. Now my goal is to continue with trauma therapy. Do not be me and let your past dictate your future. No matter how clean you are from drugs that trauma will creep up on you and when it does use tools like Beachway to seek help instead of the alternative, and please for the love of your higher power get out of your own way and accept their help before you get kicked out like i did. I am forever grateful. Thanks for letting me share my expierence, strength and hope.

My experience at Banyan was very good. The staff was very helpful, the therapy was extremely beneficial , and the food was great! Like with all rehabs, it is what you make of it. If you go there thinking everything is perfect, you’ll be disappointed, it’s not. If you go for simply a social experience, it’s not a resort. If you go because you’re serious about your recovery, it’s a great place to take the first step !

Loved Beachway. I was extremely anxious with everyday panic attacks, and the medicine was no longer working. At Beachway I found a way to control my attacks and anxiety. It is not easy and sometimes I felt like it wasn’t going to work.
We worked through my childhood traumas and I learned techniques on how to defuse my anxiety.

A Love Letter to the Place That Saved My Life
There are no words big enough, no thank-yous deep enough, to fully express what this place has given me. Walking through the doors of this rehab, I was not just broken—I was gone. A shell. An echo of the person I used to be. I didn’t come in with hope; I came in with desperation. I had burned bridges, lost myself, and forgotten what it meant to truly live. But this place… this place gave me everything back—and more.
From day one, the staff treated me not as a case or a number, but as a soul worth saving. They didn’t judge my past. They held space for my pain, gently guiding me out of the shadows I’d been lost in for so long. They reminded me that I wasn’t just addicted—I was hurting, I was human, and I was still worthy of love.
The counselors weren’t just professionals—they were warriors, walking with us every step, sometimes carrying us when we couldn’t carry ourselves. They challenged us. Believed in us. Cried with us. Laughed with us. Celebrated every tiny victory like it was the Super Bowl. Because in recovery, those victories are everything.

When I walked through those doors, I was exhausted. Not just tired — spiritually winded. I was carrying the weight of choices, shame, fear, and the echo of my own voice asking, “Will I ever be whole again?”

A team of the most compassionate, professional, beautifully human beings I’ve ever met welcomed me — not like a patient, but like a person. Like someone worth fighting for. From the nurses to the counselors, the kitchen staff to the therapists, the front desk to the housekeeping — each one of them carried light into my darkest moments.

I was referred to Banyan by Sandstone, a facility in Denver. Originally from Northern Colorado, I was hesitant at first. However, upon my arrival, I was impressed by the dedication, professionalism, and exceptional therapists. While there are some logistical improvements that a new company like Banyan can make, they still deserve five stars for their impactful work in transforming lives. I arrived homeless and hopeless, despite minor issues typical of new facilities, I experienced significant success. I left with an apartment and received excellent therapy recommendations. No other facility offers a residential curriculum like this one. The director is passionate about what they do and takes the time to converse and give examples in Laymans terms to help the patients understand exactly what is going on with their physical body and brain. To see your director interact with humility is the most endearing feeling to people that may be fearful to be inquisitive of the care. I went to Immersion in January, this is my second treatment center i went too in the past two years, unlike the first one i went too Immersion is 12 step focused! They have specific groups in residential where you read the big book as well. They guided me through the steps and profoundly changed my life.
Today I celebrated 4 months of sobriety thanks to immersion! I went through there detox—residential-PHP and iop program.

Immersion is one of the few programs that help and guide you through a thorough and in-depth 4th Step. They have specific 4th step personnel that will sit down with you and help you open your mind to all of the resentments you have had since your childhood. CBH has a great caring staff, case management goes above and beyond to make sure your needs are met. I had complications with getting my sublocade shot on MAT but they made it easy taking me to a psychiatrist for it when appointment was made. The structure is great with when you get your phone and laptop after blackout period so you can look for jobs, sober living etc and the ability to communicate with your support system/ family. NICOLE is a great therapist and Cameron for case management were assigned to me and did a great job.

Compassion Behavioral Health changed my life. From the 1st day when I checked myself into the PHP program all of the staff made me feel welcomed. I was extremely nervous about joining a program for my mental health issues since this was my 1st time doing It. Once I got there the techs (Jen, Jojo, Sabrina, both Brians, Jerry, and Ben) for the intake, Anna the clinical director, and Joe made sure any questions I had were answered and I felt comfortable. Housing could have not been nicer! Exceeded all my expectations!
Once I had my 1st day participating in the program I was introduced to my therapist Nicole, and case manager Will. I can’t begin to explain the impact they had on my experience. Nicole, listened and understood what I needed and immediately we began treatment to help me live, understand and have a full amazing life. Will helped me with all things that I felt were too overwhelming to handle. Now that I am done with the program I can confidently say I can handle the hard things.
During the program the group facilitators were amazing! Raquel, Greg, Carla, Elizabeth, Warnette, and the many others listened and taught me skills I didn’t know I needed. I bonded with them and they helped me on this journey.
Finally, I finished PHP and joined the IOP program. Maria our group facilitator was truly amazing. She helped me tremendously with my transition from PHP to the “real world!”
All and all if you have the chance to join this program weather It be for substance abuse or mental health, if you have to start at residential or jump right into PHP like I did, I could not recommend more!
Everyone I meant there (Monya, and Cam just to name a few) whether they worked with me directly or just created a relationship with them while being in the program helped me get to where I am now! 10/10

I have just graduated from this program today. And what I have to say is, I am so grateful for Provive wellness, they have been apart of the programs that have saved my life. This is my 3rd time in treatment. They say third time is a charm. They are right. Crestview recovery was an amazing experience. It was well organized and they knew what every individual needed to be successful on this journey of recovery. The staff was really nice and took care of all my needs. They were patient and gave me space when I needed it. They kept me busy and always learning something new everyday about myself and how addiction works. This treatment center has save me from death. I now strive to be my best self and show up even when I don’t want to. I’ve learned how to be patient with others because they were patient with me. This kinda of program will only work if you work it and I want to see change in yourself. Treatment gives you a new start to life no matter what awful things you did in the past. I attended the partial hospitalization and mental health outpatient program at Crestview, and it has helped me get my life and health back on track.
I felt welcomed and supported by the staff. The counselors were compassionate, knowledgeable and truly dedicated to providing individualized help that addressed my needs.
The program is structured similar to other PHP programs, providing a mix of group sessions and individualized therapy. The group sessions taught helpful skills, included some yoga, topic presentations, and allowed me to connect with others who were going through similar experiences. The individual and family sessions were where I felt Crestview really shined, providing individualized care that helped me get back on my feet, functioning and happy again.

Bill Alessia and the rest of the team provided me with support, encouragement and additional motivation.
I cannot thank The RWB program for everything it meant to me. From military veterans to first responders, police officers, fire and emergency medicine, we all share similar hardships and experiences.
Talking about our trauma related to the different duties we performed while serving the people of the United States. We have some horrific stories to tell and be processed. Being in process groups that were made up of this group of folks allowed for our stories to come out in full detail.
Our pain in our suffering was not just shuffled under the rug, andI was allowed to be talked about openly with all the black eyes, bloody details and horrific outcomes.

Many of the staff were in long-recovery themselves, which was conducive to a safe and healing environment. The food was top-tier and way above expectations. The living space was clean, spacious, and felt like a home away from home. The therapy program was incredibly beneficial to my personal recovery, and has given me the tools necessary to put my life back on the ‘Right Path’My needs were consistently met and exceeded in every way possible, and I would highly recommend this program to anybody looking for a fresh start and a solution to the cunning disease of addiction.

What an unbelievable miracle Live Oaks Wellness Center has been in our family’s life. From the very beginning, Marcelo Nazarian — the Director of Admissions and Clinical Outreach — went above and beyond to support us. Even before my child entered their care, Marcelo personally spoke with him to offer reassurance and compassion, and a thoughtful, structured plan was already in place.
Throughout the past year, Marcelo has continued to stand by our side, showing a level of commitment and care that is truly rare. Jake was equally incredible — always available, always listening, and always willing to connect with any of us in the family. His ability to support not just our son but all of us made a lasting impact.
Our son made real progress at Live Oaks, and a full year later, we were able to work with the team to develop a thoughtful transition plan. Even now, long after his time there, Marcelo continues to check in — or picks up the phone when I need someone to talk to. That level of care and ongoing connection is something I’ve never seen before.
Addiction that begins in the early teen years is incredibly complex, and the road to recovery is never straightforward. While our roller coaster has not ended, I can honestly say I don’t know where I’d be without Marcelo and Jake Tedesco. Their compassion, consistency, and willingness to show up day after day — even when things were hard — made all the difference. They truly are a safe pair of hands and make you feel a little less alone.

I couldn’t be more grateful for the incredible program Live Oaks Wellness offered me… the incredible staff, therapist, and the amazing people I met while I was there has changed my life, FOREVER!
Before walking through the doors I had no idea what to expect, this was my first time in treatment. I was scared but was immediately able to completely surrender with the warm welcome by ALL.
They made sure I felt at home, but most Importantly made me feel safe and comfortable through the entire program.
They not only offer a VERY comfortable detox (which was my biggest worry) but they offer SOOO MUCH MORE…
A spacious, clean & cozy house with a swimming pool, basketball court, huge backyard incredible therapy, private chef, outings, private workouts, art therapy, AA/NA meetings, the list goes on!

TL;DR: Live Oaks Wellness is a life-changing rehab center that supported me through two of the most difficult times in my life. My first stay taught me invaluable lessons, and after a relapse, my second stay solidified my recovery and led to a profound spiritual awakening. The compassionate staff, beautiful location, and evolving programs helped me rediscover purpose and regain control of my life. I owe them everything for helping me become a new person.
Live Oaks Wellness is one of the best rehab centers in California. Jack and the team were there for me when my life was hanging by a thread, guiding me through some of the darkest moments of my life. I went twice—once to start my journey and again after a relapse—but not because they didn’t do their job. It took me two stays to confront the deeper issues I wasn’t ready to face.
Here’s a detailed account of both visits:
First Stay:
I was terrified when I first went to rehab. My marriage was on the brink, and I was completely lost. Arriving at Live Oaks Wellness in Novato, California, was a relief. The facility, set on a beautiful private property with serene hills, a peaceful garden, a basketball court, and a swimming pool, felt like a haven.
The staff welcomed me with care and compassion. Tim, the head of medical, became a trusted friend, guiding me through detox and beyond. My private room was like a hotel suite—comfortable and equipped with everything I needed to unwind.
Once detox was over, I joined the other five residents. With only six people at a time, the experience was intimate. The facility had endless snacks, entertainment, and a huge TV to relax with. The daily schedule was full of therapy, physical activities, and support meetings. Each day started with a check-in and ended with reflection, keeping me grounded.
The relationships I formed were unforgettable. The residents are carefully screened, ensuring a positive environment. After 30 days, I felt transformed, and they helped set me up with aftercare to continue my recovery.
Second Stay:
After 265 days sober, my life fell apart. My wife and I lost our second baby, and hours later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I relapsed, and the next two months were a nightmare. My wife helped me reconnect with Jack, and I re-entered Live Oaks.
The relapse wasn’t the program’s fault but my failure to maintain the practices I learned. Returning was the wake-up call I needed.
The second stay was even better than the first. The program had expanded with new therapies and in-person meetings. Frequent outings to the ocean and nature walks helped me reconnect with the world. It was a game-changer after Zoom meetings in my first stay.
This time, I experienced a profound spiritual awakening and discovered a higher purpose I never knew existed. I don’t see my relapse as failure but as part of my journey. Live Oaks helped me become a better, stronger version of myself.
Live Oaks is more than just rehab. It’s a place where lives are rebuilt, and people rediscover their strength. If you’re considering treatment, I can’t recommend them enough.
