Luminare (Formerly NGS CoreSource) Insurance Coverage for Drug & Alcohol Rehab
Explore how Luminare, a third-party administrator, connects employers with addiction treatment options for self-funded health plans.
In 2022, NGS Coresource was acquired by Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC) and rebranded as Luminare.
Luminare is a third party administrator of health benefits that helps with self funded insurance plans. They work with employers, hospitals and medical systems, indigenous tribes, and other organizations. Your employer may use Luminare to access medical networks and provide specialized care and case management. Organizations can also get backend tools to help them track the use of services and costs.
As an employee or member of an organization you might see Luminare’s name when you look for in network providers or have questions about coverage. They can also help when you need help managing a complex health issue or request preauthorization for services.
Does Luminare Cover Addiction Treatment?
Luminare provides employers and organizations with connections to doctors and facilities that can provide care. However, they don’t decide what’s covered. Instead, they will help your employer or organization build a unique coverage plan and then help provide the services your organization decides on.
Self funded health insurance plans are not required to offer any specific benefits the way many other insurance plans are. However, if they do decide to offer mental health and substance treatment they have to provide them at the same coverage level as other care according to the 2008 Mental Health Parity Act.
It’s very important to check with your organization’s benefits specialist or to contact Luminare with your plan’s name to find out what is covered and at what level. That way you won’t have any surprises when you start treatment.
Making the decision to go to Beachway was, by far, the most positive and impactful experience of my life. The entire staff was incredible, as was the community as a whole. I felt safe, seen, and supported throughout my stay, and even now, as I continue my healing journey at home. I was completely set up for success in my healing journey thanks to Beachway, and I will forever be grateful.

My experience at Beachway was a 100/10. The life skills I learned are priceless and that’s putting it lightly. Beachway was the third treatment center I had been to, following the sudden loss of a loved one. I had prior sobriety before beachway and was convinced that I was only there because of a death, and that that was why I was spiraling. The staff at Beachway saw I needed much more help than that. They all knew before I did that if that death didn’t happen, I probably wouldn’t have stayed sober anyway. There was still much more therapy to be done, and more to learn.
The staff took a genuine care in doing so, and looking back at their clinical process they are nothing short of a power house of a team. I never felt so cared for as a human being by people that just met me. The staff quickly became my family, cheering me on while also taking it extremely serious. They are unapologetically honest, which in my experience is the #1 thing needed in recovery. Many of the things they said to me during my time there still stick with me (a year later) and help me navigate life!
I tell anyone that has a loved one with Substance abuse or mental health issues about beachway.
There is no other place like it🤍

I owe Beachway my life for sure. I won’t lie and say that I loved every minute of it because I didn’t. A lot of it was very painful, because confronting inner demons is painful. It was a lot of group therapy (especially given how afraid of people I was going in), but they truly helped me gain sobriety and face down my trauma. And they put up with a lot of my crazy behavior while I was going through withdrawals in detox. Like any rehab, you’ll get out of it what you put into it. Surrender to the process for best results. Rehab isn’t a magic wand that makes problems vanish. Rehab gave me the opportunity to accept the ways in which I cause my own suffering instead of blaming everyone around me, while surrounded by professionals who prevented me from hurting myself while my dried out, and helped me identify the underlying causes of my addiction. It will be tough. It will be scary. It will be worth it. I wish I’d gone sooner. The staff there are wonderful and don’t get enough credit. Thank you Beachway.
I have had the opportunity to refer folks to Wellbrook. The facility is first rate. It is clean and welcoming. the staff is extremely professional and knowledgeable. The facility is small so individuals get a lot of hands on encouragement. They stay with you after your discharge. First rate !!!

Transitions Recovery Program in Miami didn’t just help me get sober it gave me a life beyond my wildest dreams. I walked in lost, broken, and unsure if real change was even possible. What I found was a deeply compassionate and structured environment that not only supported my recovery, but challenged me to grow in ways I never thought I could.
The staff is incredible many of them are in recovery themselves, so they get it. They met me where I was without judgment, but also didn’t let me stay stuck in old patterns. The clinical team, the group sessions, the one-on-one therapy, and even the everyday accountability they all played a part in reshaping how I saw myself and the world around me.
What really sets Transitions apart is that they don’t just focus on staying sober they teach you how to build a meaningful, fulfilling life in recovery. They helped me reconnect with who I really am, helped me process trauma, build healthier relationships, and most importantly, believe in myself again.
I’ll never be able to fully put into words how grateful I am for this place. Transitions helped me reclaim my life and then some. If you’re struggling, if you’re feeling hopeless, please know that change is possible. This program showed me that.

Maple moon has been a God send! Can’t express my gratitude for the care and compassion they’ve given me. Came into this Austin with so much resistance and they made my stay feel like home. From the food to the staff everything was Top Tier. If they had more stars I would give them 10. If you out a loved one is looking for a recovery center with integrity and a high degree of care, you’ve found the right place.

I had the privilege of coming here for detox and couldn't be more appreciative of the staff and accommodations here. I stayed for 2 weeks and was constantly catered to by all of the staff. Truly a 5 star experience while going through the worst time of my life. The people here truly treat you like their own family. I don't know how they manage to deal with several emotional people all day every day and still manage to give everybody specialized individual attention but they do. I came in there like a wrecking ball and they still took great care of me. Even the chefs cater to everybody's personal needs. I'll be 200 days sober in 2 days and probably wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for this place. A very delayed review, but anybody questioning if they should stay here or not should have no question about it and choose Maple Moon for their recovery.

aple Moon Recovery feels like home while helping you do the hard work of healing. The staff truly care, the programs dig deep into the “why” behind addiction, and you leave with real tools for life. If you’re on the fence about recovery—this is the place that can change everything.
This is the only place I know of that will truly help you if you are in crisis with addiction. Brad, Joey, Thomas, and Jenelle are the best care team I have ever met. I love you all!!!!!!

I just left allure and it checking myself in and staying there to complete the residential after detoxing was the best decision I’ve made in decades. The clinical director Brad and the operations director Joey have an amazing staff around them. Most are in recovery and they UNDERSTOOD me. Going to treatment can be nerve wracking and their team made sure I was comfortable and welcomed. I spent over 3 weeks there and not once did I feel out of place or unsafe. They helped me work through all of the problems i had in my life when I admitted myself in the wake of my active addiction and I left with a purpose and the guidance and aftercare I needed to remain sober in the future. There’s no magic pill or wand to cure sobriety but they genuinely care and motivate you to put in the work and learn the tools to stay clean. If you’re tired of the consequences and pain/suffering from active addiction then find a way to get into allure right now. They’ll save your life and help you build a new one.

I didn’t them a five because they don’t offer virtual therapy options. Other than that, they offer great care and really helped me in my recovery. The staff was super supportive and used evidence based methods, which helped with the combo of addiction and mental health stuff I’ve been dealing with. Their women’s groups felt safe and afirming, which made a huge difference for me. I’m grateful for the help I got

At first I was nervous and scared. I felt rehab was like a hospital ward. Once I arrived from the intake coordinator Janet was so caring, helpful and compassionate. Gregg who drove us to center and Dr Calloway office eased my nerves. Both had a lot of good conversations. Once I got to the center. I was welcomed by my sober mate which I still keep in contact and others. My counselor Jake was amazing very informative, compassionate. All of the counselors including Cdtechs as well. I literally cried when I left I felt it was my second home. Chef Shilpa always made amazing meals that I ever had. I felt very spoiled. My time there was very structured, educational and informative. Provided the tools for me to stay on my sobriety journey. There is so much more I could express about my experience. All I can say I was very blessed, grateful for New Recovery 🙏🏼💖🙏🏼
Great staff. Fully supported me in my recovery and ongoing care. They offer amazing therapists and knowledgeable case managers. Lakeside truly helped me get my life back on track.
Update : I am now a year sober and could not have gotten here without the education, connections, and resources provided my Lakeside Milam.

Attending Lakeside has been one of the best decisions of my life. Their inpatient facility in Kirkland has a very welcoming atmosphere, the grounds are wooded and beautiful you get lots of free time to enjoy yourself mixed in with some very informative lectures and groups.
I spent some time at the outpatient facility and I would again suggest going there for inpatient, outpatient, or continuing care. I had a wonderful case worker for most of my time there who helped me navigate some challenging life experiences, and the groups I had there were invaluable to my recovery.
They are a 12 step focused treatment facility, but they also promote exploration of other programs and won't alienate you if you don't vibe with AA as your chosen method of recovery.
Thank you Lakeside Milam!
Counselor nodded out on me 😆 I like to believe he was on methadone or Suboxone but he literally asked me how long he was out when he came to. All while talking about super personal information... I've been there three times... Not since the 90s old location .. thank you Lord above..
Another time the guy had the exact same line "don't you want to go to the ocean and throw your girlfriend in it type of shit 😂" same guy ten years apart it was beyond memorable. But this place plants seeds that lead to a life of substance free Bliss!! The acupuncture in the AM and evening AA/NA Meetings meant everything to me.

I've personally been detoxed at Hooper at least a dozen times, once even overdosing in their lobby & waking up in the ER. In sobriety, I've gone in with H&I to talk to the patients that want to hear it. It's not forced or mandatory, but strongly suggested. Hell, I even remember getting thrown into the old Hooper drunk tank after being a passenger in a DUI car accident. I should've played injured instead of trying to leave the scene. Anyway reading through the negative & single star comments, it's very clear for me to see the repeating theme & same old BS excuses people love to try riding. It's very apparent to me that each "concerned loved one" or "missing son/daughter/Mom"... wasn't ready to hold themselves accountable for the decisions & consequences of their actions. Even back when they only had a payphone & a roll of quarters made you the man inside. It's long since been changed to free 24/7 phone access for outgoing calls. With or without the confirmation HIPPA protection LAW... the front desk employees have NO CHOICE but to adhere by & follow! They'll take a kite note & fly it where it needs to be. If your loved one hasn't AMA'd themselves, which they can do ANYTIME since only adults can be there & it's not a jail. I've left at 3am throwing a damn fit thinking my girlfriend on the female side had left cuz they wouldn't tell me if she was still there! She was & I ended up the dumbass in relapse, alone. NOTHING on the recovery path at all will EVER succeed without that first required desire & commitment from within. To then accept a plethora of positive suggestions & encouragement that'll only fall on deaf ears unless YOU LISTEN for it! Shit even right now in my full addiction, a criminally corrupt career criddler... I can see the writing on these comment walls! Hoopers without a doubt... Saved my life more than once. Maybe they'll do it again ... If I decide to let them help me help myself!
Our options are few & the end game for everyone is the same. Why speed up reaching death & spending the gifted time of life in misery. Forcing loved ones to be miserable. Let go of your guilt, blaming yourself is obviously a step towards acceptance. Quit punishing yourself though, because your punishing everyone else that loves you too! You are the most important person in your life & ain't nothing selfish about living like it!
Good Luck🍀😘

Frequently Asked Questions
What Insurance Products Does Luminare Provide?
Every self funded employer or organizational plan is different, and Lumiaire offers a variety of elements that employers can combine to create their own unique insurance coverage. Not every plan will have all the elements described below.
The most important part of Lumiaire’s help is the connection to a medical network. They can offer over 40 different provider networks including options from Aetna and Cigna along with Multiplan and First Health and more. Networks can be national or regional. As an employee or organization member you’ll want to understand the provider network so you can maximize your insurance coverage and keep your out of pocket costs low.
Luminare also provides healthcare management services such as a phone number for plan members to call and find out details about benefits and a department that approves coverage based on medical necessity criteria.
The company also has case management options to help members navigate difficult health situations and condition specific care for oncology, maternity, and gene therapy. As a health plan member you may get access to a 24/7 nurse line and telehealth care options.
Finally if the employer or organization needs flex spending accounts (FSA) or health savings accounts (HSA) or health reimbursement accounts (HRA) Luminare can administer them.
What Inpatient Addiction Treatment Does Luminare Cover?
Self funded plans are not required to cover addiction treatment — however many will. It is important to understand your benefits coverage before starting any type of treatment to ensure it is a covered benefit.
All insurance plans require that services are deemed medically necessary before they cover them. A treatment plan created by you and your primary care provider will help support the need for addiction treatment. These are often required for preauthorization.
A normal part of developing a treatment plan is the ASAM assessment. This takes into consideration factors such as biomedical and psychosocial needs as well as strengths and assets. It also looks at your support system and resources. By assessing how you are affected by their SUD providers are able to determine the appropriate level of care you need.
In some cases you might benefit from inpatient medical detox. Medical detox offers you FDA approved medications during the detoxification process. During this process you are closely monitored by medical professionals to assess your physical and emotional condition. The use of medications decreases withdrawal symptoms and lowers the risk of health related complications. On average, medical detox lasts from 7 to 10 days but this differs from person to person.
While not everyone requires inpatient medical detox those who have undergone this process generally go on to inpatient or residential rehab. For those who do not require medical detox inpatient rehab may be the first step toward recovery.
Inpatient rehab involves 24/7 supervision in a safe and controlled environment with medical and addiction professionals. During inpatient rehab you receive individual and group therapy and you may also participate in experiential and recreational therapy.
Peer support is an important component of inpatient rehab as well. The amount of time an individual remains in inpatient rehab differs from person to person. On average the stay is somewhere between 30 and 90 days. Studies report the best success with the 90 day programing.
It is always important to remember that each recovery journey is unique and that treatment plans differ greatly depending on the needs of individuals.
What Outpatient Rehab Does Luminare Cover?
Depending on your insurance plan outpatient rehab may be covered. It is extremely important to check with your insurance plan before starting any program to verify if a referral or preauthorization is required before you start treatment.
Outpatient care could include partial hospitalization programs (PHP) and/or intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and/or general outpatient treatment and aftercare programs.
A PHP is an intensive outpatient program for people with alcohol and substance use disorder. For some this is the first step in the process or it could be a second step for those who finished inpatient rehab. This treatment option requires 20 hours per week or more of programming but allows you to return home each night. You get treatment similar to inpatient care.
An IOP is less intensive than a PHP and requires around 9 hours per week. The program usually lasts for 90 days. You can often work the schedule around work or school obligations. This type of treatment is best for people with mild to moderate addiction and those who have a high motivation for recovery. An IOP involves individual and group therapy with a focus on relapse prevention as well as improving coping skills and developing tools to recognize triggers. You’ll also work on support system repair and development.
General outpatient treatment is best for people with mild alcohol and substance use disorder and few psychosocial risk factors. Individuals work one on one with a therapist or addiction specialist to prevent relapse. Learning to recognize triggers and improving coping skills as well as healing from past trauma are integral parts of relapse prevention.
Does Luminare Cover Methadone & Suboxone (MAT)?
Medication assisted treatment (MAT) may be a covered benefit with your insurance. Before starting any type of program it is important to remember to check with your insurance provider to determine if you need a referral or preauthorization.
MAT uses FDA approved medications to help those with alcohol and substance use disorder during the early recovery period. These medications — such as naltrexone and buprenorphine along with methadone and acamprosate — ease withdrawal symptoms and help to normalize brain chemistry and stabilize body functions. This is especially important during medical detox.
Some individuals only need MAT during the detox process while others need it throughout treatment to help manage cravings to reduce the risk of relapse and decrease the risk of overdose. For most people longer term MAT is combined with inpatient or outpatient treatment to help you establish long term recovery.
Does Luminare Cover Other Mental Healthcare?
Self funded plans are not required to cover mental health treatment but many plans do. It is important to know what your benefits are and to verify if preauthorization is required before starting any type of mental healthcare.
Mental healthcare is especially important for people with alcohol and substance use disorder. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that people with SUD commonly have co occurring mental health diagnoses. These may include anxiety or depression as well as PTSD or bipolar disorder or other diagnoses. It is important to address both mental health and addiction with an integrated plan to treat them together.
Does Addiction Treatment Need to Be In Network?
This differs from one self funded plan to another. Again it is important to understand what your benefits are before starting any type of treatment.
With most self funded plans it is reasonable to assume that most plans will require the use of in network providers. Even if out of network care is covered it’s best to stay in network if you can for the best coverage and the lowest out of pocket expenses.
What to Do if Luminare Won’t Cover the Cost of Rehab
If your employer’s self funded health plan does not cover the cost of rehab there may be other options to help pay for care.
One option is to pay for treatment yourself. Many treatment centers have payment plans available or offer a sliding scale of fees based on income. Others offer scholarships to help pay for the cost of treatment. Another may be to apply for a Care Credit card which will allow repayment over time.
Finally free services can be found in many communities through organizations such as the Salvation Army or YMCA along with homeless shelters or faith based organizations. As with all types of medical and mental health care it is extremely important to verify accreditation and ensure the highest quality of care when seeking free or low cost treatment options.
How to Verify Coverage With Luminare
With self funded plans the best place to start would be with the benefits manager or contact person within the organization. If there is a member identification card there may be a customer service number on the back of the card to contact.
Self funded insurance plans differ greatly from one to another. Before starting any type of treatment plan you should speak with a representative from Luminare to fully understand your benefit coverage and need for such things as determination of medical necessity before starting care.
