Magellan Health is the parent of two companies: Magellan Healthcare and Magellan Federal. Both offer behavioral health and support services for clients. Magellan Healthcare serves health plans and employers along with states. Magellan Federal is focused on serving men and women in the military.
In 2022 Magellan Health was acquired by Centene Corporation. However the company continues to operate as a separate subsidiary and maintains their name and brand. Magellan employs over 5,000 people and their services impact millions of Americans.
Does Magellan Health Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?
Magellan Health provides behavioral health solutions and care management services to insurance plans and employers along with states and federal agencies. However Magellan doesn’t determine what is covered or how much coverage you have — the insurance plan determines that.
That’s why it’s so important to verify your coverage details before you start treatment. You may find that you need a doctor’s referral or preauthorization to get insurance coverage.
Also insurance plans focus on covering medically necessary care. Working with your doctor to create a treatment plan for your addiction diagnosis will not only give you direction on what programs to look for but will help prove medical necessity as well.
If you’re identifying potential rehab programs or clarifying insurance rules, you can learn more about rehab options to locate centers that align with your benefits.

I went to Boca for detox and a short rehab stay. I can’t say enough about incredibly helpful and caring the staff was. Special shoutout to Mikaela, one of the therapists there and all of the techs and nurses. They guided and helped me along my journey to recovery.

I have never been in any treatment facility for my addiction and I am so grateful that I was sent to Boca. I was scared and nervous about being away from home but I was immediately put at ease by the staff. I had no clothes, Bridget came to my rescue with clothes. Sissy, the housekeep, loved on me like a mother with everything I needed to build my self esteem. Ashley, my Therapist, gave me so many tools to not pick up again and assisted me with many coping skills. Brianna, the case manager, assisted me with all things FMLA and pay related with was great because I didn’t know where to start. The chefs, Joseph and Tyron fed me amazing meals to regain my strength and stay healthy. Kevin, the alumni coordinator, has given me his direct contact in case I need anything sobriety related. Overall this has been a life changing experience for me and I am grateful to have had this opportunity and I know that I have truly made life long friendships at Boca.

I went to BRC thinking that I wasn't like the other patients there. That drugs and alcohol weren't really the issues I struggled with. Within two days into my recovery I began to let my guard down and accept not only skills they offer but accept the situation I'm in. I left there learning several things including how to deal with addiction, mindfulness, surrender, and gratitude. Thank you BRC for swiftly helping me find myself and providing me with the necessary tools for the ever-long journey ahead. A+ staff

Oh man, I can not thank this place enough for literally helping me when I thought I had no where to turn. Every single staff member from housekeeping to the directors were unbelievably kind and caring for each and every client and our different needs. Every single staff member takes the time to always check in with you, even if you're having a down day and just need to rest your mind and body. The everyday groups became something I looked forward to going to. I loved hearing how there really are people JUST LIKE ME! I had some of the best laughs and made great memories here. I made friends for life. I learned so much about myself that I didnt even know was there. I truly love every single human at Boca and I can't ever thank them enough!

I dragged what was left of me into Boca 3/4 of the way dead and I had completely given up on life. I've seen some very ugly things in my life and took some very heavy losses that year and decided I was going to crawl in a bottle and stay there until I was dead. It seems God and Boca had different ideas and if it wasn't for either one of them I wouldn't be here today writing this review the staff in Boca showed me love kindness and mercy when I needed it . It's not all about the clinical side of recovery there. The staff work through the heart I could actually see it in their eyes. And let me tell you I did not show them the same love kindness and mercy when I was there but they shouldered it anyway and took good care me I have nothing but love for the staff at Boca welll accept one guy there's always that one guy 😎
My name is Colin and I’m an alcoholic and needed to find recovery for a better state of lifestyle and health. Design for Change provided a structured environment and reliable access needed for recovery. The routine, resources, and accountability offered a stable foundation for developing healthier habits and clearer direction. Overall, my experience was consistent with what the program aims to provide. I was able to focus on my goals, maintain sobriety, and utilize the structure as a stepping stone for my continued personal growth. As of November 18, 2025 I have maintained my recovery and am over a year sober from alcohol. Design for Change saved my life.

This has been an incredible journey from start to finish. I came in broken and in need of help. This is more than just rehab, it's truly life changing with great structure, compassionate staff, laughter, and healing. I'm forever grateful to the owner, the lead counselor, and the rest of the staff for helping me find myself and helping me find a life free of pain, depression, and uncontrollable addiction and alcoholism.

DPR was truly an amazing experience. They genuinely care about you and your recovery journey. Lucus pours his heart into this place and it shows. Cindy, TJ and JJ were extremely supportive and personable. The nurses, Amanda, Kenya, Bradie, and Kate were so kind and helpful. And of course Drew and Star were a highlight with the awesome food they prepared and had really great insight. It is truly a gem in the recovery community.

I don’t even know where to begin. This treatment center is truly changing lives. My husband attended their program during one of the hardest times our family has ever faced, and I can confidently say they gave us hope and confidence in his recovery.
From day one, the staff treated him with compassion and dignity. They weren’t just professionals—they were caring, patient, and truly passionate about helping people rebuild their lives. The counselors went above and beyond, not just helping him work through addiction, but helping him rediscover who he is without it.
What meant the most to me as a spouse was how they kept family involved and supported throughout the process. I felt heard and understood. This wasn’t just treatment—it was transformation.
This program has saved my wife’s life! They exceed expectations and Ron helped me when I needed it most. They are passionate on what they do and I appreciate them for caring for my wife during this difficult time in her life.

I want to start by saying to ignore any negative review on this place. I personally went to Rise at Mayberry and cannot say enough of amazing things. I’ve been to many different facilities over the last decade and this one has become family. I get emotional and want to cry with gratitude when I think about how the staff/clients have been there for me during the most difficult moments of my life. Everyone turned their back on me outside of here while they didn’t judge me and gave me a chance. Ron reminds me of my papa being the kindest man ever. He cares deeply about each client, is passionate, patient, generous, the list goes on. Lauren has gone above and beyond for me with all my legal issues making sure everything is done the way it needs to be. She listens without judgment and is always available to help me. Allison was so helpful getting me into this place and throughly explained all the services that’s offered here. She’s relatable and kind. Dr. Neesha is beautiful inside and out, intelligent, and a strong woman of faith. She’s so insightful and working with her as a therapist has been my honor. Not to mention the support staff are incredible. Josh K has also made himself always available to the clients and he’s helped me so much from his own personal experiences dealing with dependency court/CPS. Chris and Tim are also such an honor to know. Tim, with all his travel stories and passion for AA. Chris, prioritizing the physical fitness in sobriety. All their stories on how they ended up here are inspirational. God brought me here unexpectedly and it’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. I live in Orange County which has a lot of recovery and places to get sober, but i couldn’t be more blessed that I landed here. I’ve been here without my young children for a couple months now and I wouldn’t have been able to get through this difficult time without everyone here. I’ll never forget what’s been done for me ❤️ addiction is a lonely disease, allow them to help guide you to a solution.

This place was amazing! The staff has also walked in shoes similar to my own so it made relating to them much easier! I was able to get a good head start in sobriety here! The residents were also amazing! If I had to refer anyone needing help I would definitely refer them here! It’s a great place to start your sober journey!
Sadly, Windmill now is allowing previous employees to post reviews. This troubles me. My initial review was heartfelt and honest. It upsets me that Windmill is doing this. Windmill used to be better than this. Perhaps it has to do with the new ownership.

I had the most amazing experience of my life! WWR saved my life in many ways. I tackled multiple addictions and took advantage of every service they offer (which there are many!). The counselors and recovery advocates are incredible. While I now have the tools to go back to the real world, I will miss this place in my soul. I would recommend WWR to anyone needing to face addiction or any other mental challenge.

Windmill is set amongst a beautiful scenery of trees and deers, that enables peace of mind and a healing quietness for the spirit. This serene atmosphere grows and shines in the people living there and the ones there providing us support through their smiles and patient caring for each other. I was able to learn again what it felt like to be human, sane, and a part of something. Fellowship being the heart of the strength built, I walked away with a community that stands as an army ready to fight together. You will be empowered. It works if you work it. As the windmill keeps turning, so shall we!
My experience at Banyan was A+. I was so lost before coming to Banyan. I needed the extra help handling my addictions and I made the right choice coming here. They helped me get clean which was the first step. The staff was all wonderful during the progression of staying clean and helping me prepare to take on life again. I don’t know where I would be without Banyan. Thank you to all of the instructors, therapists, case managers, and BHT that supported me along this journey.

My experience at Banyan residential 30 day stay was an enlightening experience. I learned a lot about myself and the disease of my addiction. I have learned the tools to practice for further recovery. All and all its staff was very helpful and mindful for what struggles I was facing. Through therapy and group sessions made me feel at home. I recommend this place through my personal experience.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Exceptional Care, Life-Changing Experience at Asana Recovery
My journey with Asana Recovery has been nothing short of transformational. Walking through their doors, I wasn’t just another patient entering a treatment center—I was a person in need of compassion, structure, and genuine guidance. From the very beginning, the team at Asana made me feel seen, heard, and supported in a way that very few treatment centers truly deliver.
After just two months in recovery, I was given the incredible opportunity to become a house manager, which was a breathtaking experience. Not only did it deepen my recovery, but it allowed me to support others walking the same path. That chance to step into responsibility and service was life-changing, and it’s something I will always carry with me.
What sets Asana apart is the people. Jonathan and Linda, in particular, are shining examples of what makes this place extraordinary. Jonathan’s ability to connect with individuals on a deeply human level created a sense of trust that allowed me to open up and truly engage in the process. His wisdom, steadiness, and encouragement gave me tools that I will carry for the rest of my life. Linda’s presence is like a beacon—warm, nurturing, and absolutely unshakable. Her kindness and dedication went far beyond a “job”; it was clear she cares about every single person who comes through Asana’s program as if they were family.
And it isn’t just them—the entire Asana team embodies that same commitment. Whether it was the counselors guiding me through difficult conversations, the medical staff ensuring I was safe and cared for, or the support staff who brought positivity into every interaction, each person played an important role in making recovery feel possible. They created an environment that blended professionalism with heart, where structure and accountability were balanced with compassion and encouragement.
I’ve been to other facilities and spoken with countless people who have gone through recovery in different settings, and I can say without hesitation that Asana stands in a class of its own. Their approach is holistic, their community is genuine, and their impact is lasting.
To anyone considering Asana Recovery—whether for yourself or a loved one—know this: you will not just find treatment here; you will find hope, healing, and a family that will walk alongside you every step of the way. I am deeply grateful to Jonathan, Linda, and the entire Asana Recovery team for helping me reclaim my life.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Insurance Services Does Magellan Health Offer to Clients?
Magellan Health offers a wide range of insurance solutions that are tailored to each client’s needs.
For health plans Magellan offers behavioral health services that include coordinated care for anxiety and depression along with substance use disorder and autism and more. There are digital behavioral health services as well.
Other services that health plans can use include care management assistance and a pharmacy program to make it easier to provide prescription medications to members. They also have a program called Magellan Autism Connections® to help families care for children with autism.
Employers can take advantage of Magellan’s eMbrace employer solutions. This includes Employer Assistance Programs (EAPs) along with behavioral health care. They also have specialized solutions that augment those programs by giving additional support to young adults and adolescents along with parents and caregivers and more.
For states Magellan provides behavioral healthcare and children’s services. They also give state programs access to peer support for recovery.
Finally for federal agencies and the military Magellan Federal offers mental health and substance use services and care management along with family support services and administrative support.
Does Magellan Health Cover Mental Healthcare?
All of Magellan Health’s solutions include behavioral health services which includes mental healthcare. However Magellan doesn’t decide exactly what is covered or how much coverage is available — your insurance plan does that. So it’s important to talk to your insurance company or employer’s benefits specialist to get the details of your plan before you begin a program.
Mental health services include crisis support as well as therapy and counseling. You may be able to get peer support from those who have gone through the same issues. Whether you struggle with depression or anxiety or other mental health concerns most insurance plans will provide at least some coverage.
One thing to keep in mind is that many people with substance use disorders also have mental health diagnoses. Having both together is called a co occurring disorder or a dual diagnosis. If you have a dual diagnosis is essential to get integrated treatment that addresses both issues so you can maximize your chance of long term recovery.
What Inpatient Addiction Treatment Does Magellan Health Cover?
Because insurance companies focus on medically necessary care, you must have a treatment plan created by your physician from the beginning. Your doctor may rely on the ASAM criteria to determine whether inpatient treatment is best.
As you go through the detoxification process, it’s often safer to do it under the care of a physician and additional healthcare workers. Inpatient treatment allows you to medically detox safely as the first step to your recovery. Magellan Health has many resources for inpatient treatment, but the treatment available is based on your specific plan, so it’s always a good idea to talk to someone about your policy.
After detox you may have inpatient or residential treatment where you live at the treatment facility and focus fully on your recovery.
What Outpatient Rehab Does Magellan Health Cover?
Outpatient rehab comes in several forms. The most intensive is a partial hospitalization program or PHP. This option allows you to live at home while still receiving treatment. It’s ideal for those who need more than a regular therapist or doctor can offer but don’t need 24-hour care.
The next level is intensive outpatient programs or IOPs. This is a comprehensive, intense form of treatment that still allows you to meet outside obligations to things like work and family. You generally have treatment three hours at a time, a few days a week.
Outpatient treatment focuses on psychoeducation, relapse prevention, group and individual counseling, and teaching coping and recovery skills.
Before you commit to any type of treatment plan, make sure you discuss the specifics with your insurance company.
Does Magellan Health Cover Methadone & Suboxone (MAT)?
Some providers will recommend medication-assisted treatment, also known as MAT. This occurs when medication is combined with traditional forms of rehab, like counseling, to increase the chances of success.
Two medications often used in this process are methadone and suboxone. They are often used to treat opioid addiction and help reduce cravings while blocking highs that come from mood-altering substances. Specialists have found medication to be a valuable tool in the arsenal used to treat addiction.
If your doctor recommends any type of MAT, speak to your insurance company to ensure it’s covered before you start because coverage amounts and requirements vary per policy.
How Long Will Magellan Health Cover Rehab?
Recovery usually consists of a combination of things. Your doctor will determine your treatment plan and how long it should last. Every case is individualized to help every patient have the best chance of success.
The first step may be detox. The second step may be inpatient or outpatient treatment. The third step is often a program that allows you to integrate back into society slowly. The final step is aftercare and upkeep.
Every step is just as important as the one before it and to reach long term recovery you’ll need to complete each one.
Insurance plans each have their own limits and requirements for treatment. You’ll want to make sure you understand your full plan benefits to ensure you get coverage for your full medically recommended treatment plan.
Does Addiction Treatment Need to Be In Network?
Many plans don’t cover providers that are out of network. Even if the plan covers some costs, the deductibles and copayments are usually higher for the patient. It’s best to stay in-network if possible when choosing a treatment center or provider.
If you prefer an out-of-network provider, discuss the costs extensively before you enter treatment. Magellan Health has providers for specific services, but your individual insurance plan defines the overall medical network.
How to Verify Coverage With Magellan Health
You can check the details of your insurance policy by logging into your online account, contacting a customer service representative, or discussing your options with a specific treatment center you’re considering. Because there are a wide variety of plans, make sure you know your specific plan name.
Always verify your overall insurance details and the benefits available so you have a complete picture. If you are prepared to go into treatment with all the information, your chances of recovery greatly increase.
