HealthSmart Insurance for Drug & Alcohol Rehab
Discover how HealthSmart helps organizations build custom health plans, including options for addiction treatment and care management.
HealthSmart provides medical network options to employers who choose to self fund their health coverage for employees or organization members. They serve health insurance brokers who need custom solutions for clients as well as employers and Native tribes and anyone else who pays for health insurance coverage for an organization.
Clients can get ready made health benefit plans or simply opt for a medical network solution. The company also offers care management services and claims processing technology along with robust reporting so clients can understand their health care coverage and spend.
HealthSmart focuses on not only saving clients money and providing efficient solutions but also on treating health plan members with dignity and respect.
Does HealthSmart Cover Addiction Treatment?
HealthSmart helps employers and other organizations build health solutions but they don’t determine what services are covered or what level of coverage is available. That is up to the employer or organization.
Self funded health plans don’t have to offer the 10 essential health benefits listed in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) although many plans do. If self funded plans offer mental health or addiction coverage they are required to provide them at the same level of coverage as other medical care in accordance with the 2008 Mental Health Parity Act.
Because self funded plans vary widely it’s especially important to check with your organization’s benefits specialist to get the full details on your coverage. That way there won’t be any unexpected challenges when you start treatment.
I was admitted into detox at summer house very impressed with the staff, and especially Jen. She was very helpful with whatever questions I have. She answered immediately.I couldn't have done it without her.

God forbid I ever need a medical detox again, this is the only place I'd want to go. And I don't say this lightly: they've truly saved my life.P.S. The food is amazing.

This place saved my life! Awesome staff!!! Great program and support!
Hey Everyone at RCA Westminster!Rikku here, your favorite fluffy, Siberian Husky therapy dog, checking in with my human mom! We've been having a blast visiting you every Tuesday for about a year now, and we absolutely love being a part of the RCA Westminster family. It's our special way of giving back, and it brings us so much joy!You guys always make us feel so incredibly welcome! The staff are the best seriously, sometimes I think they sneak in even more cuddles than the patients (and I'm totally okay with that!). My mom loves to get me dressed up in a different bandana or outfit each week, so keep an eye out for my stylish looks! Seriously, she has something for every occasion! Our Tuesday routine involves visiting each of the three groups Wachusett, Monadnock, and Rescue for around 20-30 minutes each. I love showing off my tricks and all the cool things I've learned. It's also great hearing about your own furry friends and just getting to snuggle, especially when someone's having a tough time.My mom's face lights up whenever a patient or staff member says they've been waiting all day for our visit! We really put our hearts into making each Tuesday a special and uplifting experience for everyone.A Note from Rikku's Mom:Being part of the RCA Westminster community has been such an eye-opening and heartwarming experience. We adore our Tuesday visits, and the staff there make it so easy and enjoyable!Their genuine affection for Rikku is wonderful to see, and they always look forward to his visits and his ever-changing wardrobe.Rikku has totally got the RCA routine down. The moment we pull into the parking lot, he's ready to go, tail wagging, knowing he's about to get lots of love (and maybe a few treats, ok ok a LOT of treats!). He's even starting to pick up on when someone needs a little extra attention and will stay by their side a bit longer he's such a smart boy! We've attached some photos from our visits around RCA. You'll see Rikku with the 12 Steps, the RCA Westminster sign, the Serenity Prayer, a fun Thanksgiving picture from the great room, and one of Rikku and mom (with him in a therapist's chair and me in a patient's).Thank you all so much for having us! We're already looking forward to many more Tuesdays filled with smiles and furry cuddles!Warmly,Rikku and Dorothea(Just a reminder that in every photo, Rikku is safely on his leash, under my control, away from patients and staff, and wearing his official therapy dog tags.)

I recently went with a friend, who is an alumni of RCA, to a meeting. My friend is sober over a year and is still involved in going to RCA. They can t say enough about the place, all positive for them. To see the change in my friend and my experiences as a visitor, I feel the same as they do. They have great staff and there s a good energy in the place. I m looking forward to going back with my friend and passing it on.

Wolf creek is a SCAM ! After forty years of active alcoholism and 4 months recovery at Wolf Creek I have been gratefully sober over a year. Be careful you might just get healed.

I went to Wolf Creek about 2 years ago. I struggled the whole time I was there but it wasn't really their fault. Some rehabs like to keep you occupied/busy so you can keep your mind off of your life outside of rehab. Shocking your routine is a must. Wolf Creek does do that for sure. They like to keep you on a tight schedule. For the most part rehab to me is just the same just about anywhere. You know what the answer is already but you're just not doing it (for me anyways). It takes work. That work may not always look the same to everybody else. I like the counselors I had. I like the house managers. Some of the things I would have liked to have seen done more was management within the home. Their idea was for us to keep each other accountable which can be quite stressful when you're trying to get better. The one thing about any rehab that I've never really quite understood is when there is people there that are obviously not trying to get better and they still keep them. That's going to effect every single person in treatment. Possibly cause others around them to relapse. (I get some cases are harder then other but damn)Maybe a little bit more than $75 a week from Fry's would have nice as well. It was quite the struggle for some of the people that didn't have any extra money. So us other patients/clients would pick up the slack.Remember this was 2 years ago. Rehab is what you make it. You can choose to take those obstacles that you see everyday while you're in treatment and be negative about it or you can see it as practice. Those times where you don't get the Monster Energy drink that you want that morning. Sit with it. Realize it's not the end of the world. You're there to get better, not get pampered. Put in the work and be nice to the people there. All rehabs are businesses but the people make the place and the people there are awesome love you guys. Some tips for going--Get an mp3 player that does not have wifi access ( music saved me )- get it before you go and upload music to it.- FMLA and stuff like that is much easier to do and start before you leave for Rehab. Trust me on this. Check with your HR department at your job to make sure you know how to file FMLA properly. Some companies will give you short-term disability but they require a lot of stupid little loopholes you have to go through. That will not be wolf Creek's fault just remember that.- if you have meds already. Try to get all doctors information beforehand it will make things much quicker for everybody else in the officeTrust me I know it's hard to think of any of this stuff when you're in the dark but you got this
Free by the Sea opened my eyes and saved my life. I would not listen to any of the negative reviews that I noticed on here. You have to come to the program with a willingness to change in order to get the wonderful treatment offered. The staff is amazing and has every clients health, integrity, and safety in their minds and care. The team is wonderful. As long as you want to change your life, you have to give in to some of the hard things that are required. 30 day residential for me was a blessing, and I am applying Friday to go back for the PHP and IOP programs.
The staff and owners expectations of you are not hard to manage if you put your mind to your treatment. The classes are eye opening, especially the Behavioral Health and Brain studies reviews. It helps you to understand your disease and how to manage it. Taking your life seriously includes steps that are mind challenging.
I completely loved my experience, was cared for, taken to a Doctor when it was needed, provided excellent meals, comfort during my stay, clothing, and other items I was lacking. They provide all hygiene products that are required. The extra classes and options for success are endless! They even go out of their way to provide you excellent transportation to and from the facility if you communicate with the admissions staff.
Sabrina provides my favorite classes! The art and especially the vages nerve classes she gave were so helpful in reopening my creative side and mind/body regulation again. I have stayed sober outside of the program, and I would suggest this resource and program to anyone who wants to change their life, live drug and alcohol free, and start over! They do not judge your past and many of the staff and counselors know first hand what you are going through. They do not take a high and mighty pose, instead they let you understand and share their stories of failures and successes to help you see you can overcome anything!
They have encouraged me in ways I didn't even know was possible! I wish I would have found FBTS many years ago, as it would have saved me from a lot of rollercoaster setbacks with my alcoholism. Put your mind and body back together in a wonderful setting. The property is an old beach resort and truly has a light hearted spiritual surrounding of nature and many blessings if you just open your heart and mind to the great experience you will have.
The meals provided are another high review from me. The kitchen staff is great, breakfast, lunch and dinner has many options, the menu is changed daily. Always salads available. Two refrigerators stocked with goods and left overs from previous meals to be eaten at any time. Full granola and cereal bar, many snacks, tea, juice machine and ice always ready. Some of the best food I have had in years, honestly high restaurant quality.
The walking track, pickleball, and men and women's lounge areas are where you can watch some TV or get some extra time with the friends you make there. You have expectations in this program and that is no different from any other situation in life. Give it a chance, change your life, get healthier while doing so.
Thank you dearly Free By The Sea staff, Sabrina, Jasmine, with high regards to Kimberlee, Kandi, Buddy, Regina, Amanda, Kedrick, Kathi, Alex, Brian, Lisa, Kurt, Courtney, and Matt!
Can't wait to get back and see all your loving faces soon!

Free by the Sea is my second treatment center. And, as a result of this program, I can truly say that I believe wholeheartedly that it will be my last. Besides the obvious, that it is set by the beach and a beautiful campus, the curriculum covered during my stay here taught me more about myself, my addiction, my trauma, and most importantly, my sobriety, than I could have ever thought possible. I do not say these things lightly. Free by the Sea taught me the importance of having a relapse prevention plan, and gave me the tools to create one. I leave here tomorrow morning, back to my husband and my life, with such solid and valuable tools to apply to my life and long-term sobriety! I can’t leave without giving a very sincere shoutout to ALL the staff who took care of me, made me feel safe, cared about, and important. Thank you, immensely, to each one, from my first step in admissions with Landon, to the front desk staff, Kandi, Kimberly, Amanda, Regina, Chanelle and Matt, to the competent and empathetic med room staff, Nyna and Courtney. The kitchen staff is amazing as well, and Kedric’s cooking is always delicious! I will forever be grateful for my experience here and the life changing and life affirming care I received. I cannot forget my counselor, Lisa, who listened, heard me, and helped me through this journey with an individualized plan. A huge thanks also to the other counselors who led the classes who gave me a wealth of knowledge; Eugene, Diane, and Brian. And, last but certainly not least, Jenn in admissions, Sabrina in art and well being classes, as well as the sweetest housekeeping staff of Debbie and Yurika! Also, my awesome transport dude, Alex, who took me to and from treatment! A heartfelt thank you, all of you, for collectively contributing to the rest of my life, sober!

Free by the Sea is friggin amazing!!!! Anyone who says this place is not good for you is selfish and NEEDS REHAB!!! This place changed my life, granted it was time for me to grow up, and I will always correlate this place with an amazing time and giving me my life back. Its been extremely comforting being next to the Ocean and, comparatively speaking, other treatment facilities that I've been to do not hold a candle. Amazing food, accommodations, and staff. Especially staff; understanding, responsive and the perfect combination of thick-skinned (to deal with us adult children) and compassionate. I love you guys.
Thank You SO MUCH Free By The Sea

I was scared and unsure going into this process but after the Community welcomed me with open arms I knew I was in the right place. Staff went above and beyond my expectations with how devoted their are to taking care of us. I felt safe and comfortable to start my healing process. The psychiatrist is the best doctor I have ever worked with. I am forever thankful for this wonderful place in giving me a second chance at life.

I found SunCloud by Googling different outpatient treatment centers Per the request of my therapist and went with them because of their ratings. I did not know what to expect when coming into SunCloud, but as soon as I walked in, I knew I was in the right place. I was in the Naperville location, and they have both an adolescent and adult side, which includes all ages. SunCloud provides food M, W, and F for lunch, which is highly convenient as it removes the stress of figuring out what you will eat and saves you money. The therapists, front desk, and RN staff are exceptionally kind and supportive. They all want the best for every person there and recognize even the most minor accomplishments. There is a daily 1.5-hour process group where it truly feels so safe and comfortable to share whatever is on your mind/you are going through.Peers provide feedback or listen if that is what you need. The therapists are good at prompting if you need them and always allow patients to choose whether they want to share. There are psych. Ed. Groups after lunch where we learn different DBT skills or play games to engage in mindfulness. You also meet with a therapist and psychiatrist once a week one-on-one in addition to groups. I have met some of the best people at SunCloud. There is nothing like being in a place full of people to recover or better themselves and accept each other with non-judgment and love. I created lifelong friendships, and being there even inspired me to get my masters in social work. I never wanted to leave. Whether you are struggling with substance abuse, grief, eating disorders, or complex trauma, the community is SO important. The support is unmatched. Once you graduate from the program, there is an alum and outpatient group, so the support never stops. I miss coming in every day! Thank you so much SunCloud!

My wife and I just recently graduated DPR the place saved our lives and marriage I watched my wife not only gain recovery but help other clients in their recovery as well. We built a relationship with Jesus and now we live in Dallas and are productive members in society the program works thank you to Marcus Brown Raven Brian J Caroline Crystal Sarah Esther Gabby Joel amazing the therapist and RCs are great Henry Mack love you bro. But there is one thing that desperately needs to change and that s Mr William Langley the facility manager. He is a cancer to clients recovery in DPR he needs to be removed from staff before he destroys the very program that saved my family he is very disrespectful lies and is only about insurance money and it pains me to see that new clients won t get the same opportunity that we had the relapses are up the ACAs are up and he should be banded from all DPR property and I can promise you will see a growth in recovery but as long as he remains I wouldn t recommend anyone going to this program until he is removed immediately and this is coming from a leader within and out here if this program a walking testament that the program works but as long as Mr Langley is around all clients are doomed! I will go to wherever and whoever to expose him because people need this program and he simply won t test until they fail

SunCloud is an incredible resource for mental health within our communities. They offer comprehensive programming at multiple levels of care as well as across age groups. Additionally, they provide continuing education to practicing clinicians on a regular basis, demonstrating their commitment to treating groups and individuals with the latest, evidenced-based research. Additionally, SunCloud s medical team is led by Dr. Kim Dennis, who brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise in the field of mental and behavioral health to the organization. SunCloud is a great resource for adolescents and adults struggling with mental health issues, with particular expertise in treating multiple diagnoses. SunCloud provides personalized and individualized care, treating the whole person, not just a part of them. They have a highly trained and experienced medical team lead by one of the country's leading doctors, Kim Dennis. I have had personal experience with their Community Liaison, Donna Bartlett, through my work with middle and high schools. Donna is wealth of information and an amazing support system for community partners.
I've been going here for 6months and before that I was at the VA. There's a few differences between them both but most of all I can tell the Care. I have had 2 Counselors which is understandable considering the work load they have. Since the begining I have been happy and impressed how easy they made my transferring. I started just where I left off at the VA.The only thing I don't agree with or understand is when getting an increase u have to pick up for 3days before getting ur tak homes. I can understand this policy when u a starting out. But it doesn't make much sense after that. I can also say when there was a problem with my pick up (ther Mistake) my councler fixed and had all my bottles in 30mins. All I can say is If u work the program it works. Thank you

This is the only MAT program clinicnive ever been to but they have been amazing. If you are serious about your recovery they most definitely are going to help you. I've had a couple friends go to other clinics and from what was said FCCR is more strict and that's so important. Especially if you are serious about your recovery and do really want to better yourself and your life. The office staff is amazing there. The nurses are wonderful. I've had 3 different counselors due to 2 of them moving on to better their lives, but every counselor I have had has been wonderful. Very helpful. Easy to talk to. Thank you FCCR for being there and helping me better myself and my life. "It works if you work it"

Frequently Asked Questions
What Insurance Solutions Does HealthSmart Offer?
HealthSmart offers organizations benefits solutions and care management along with provider network options. The primary focus of HealthSmart’s business is their medical provider networks. These options are flexible and customizable which means every insurance plan is unique. The primary network is HealthSmart Preferred and is a preferred provider organization.
With a PPO you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see in network specialists and you will likely have access to out of network coverage. However out of network coverage is much more expensive for you — you’ll have much higher deductibles and copayments or coinsurance.
HealthSmart also offers ancillary networks that can help organizations fill care gaps or flesh out more limited primary networks.
Along with their medical networks HealthSmart offers benefits solutions such as health plan design and claims processing along with help administering flex spending accounts and more. As a member you’re unlikely to see these behind the scenes operations but they can help your organization offer health coverage more effectively.
Finally HealthSmart has care management available for clients as well. This helps your company or organization point you toward the right care at the right time based on your needs. The company helps clients focus on improving every member’s health because that’s the best way to take care of people and the best way to ensure a cost effective health plan.
What Inpatient Addiction Treatment Does HealthSmart Cover?
Addiction treatment is not a legally mandated obligation for self funded plans. Nevertheless many will offer some form of coverage. You’ll want to talk to your benefits administrator to get the full details of your plan.
Insurance’s main goal is to provide medically essential care so make sure to get a treatment plan formulated by your doctor. Clinicians utilize frameworks like the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria to decide the appropriate level of care you need. Your doctor will use the assessment to evaluate parameters such as health status and withdrawal risk to determine if your situation demands residential care.
Medically supervised detox is the initial step of inpatient treatment for many people. 24/7 onsite clinical support helps you manage the withdrawal symptoms that come with stopping using a drug.
Residential care is often the next stage of an individual’s recovery journey. In this phase you’ll be in a highly structured environment with 24/7 support. This allows you to focus fully on your recovery and avoid temptations and triggers that might lead to relapse.
What does a day in the life of a participant in an inpatient program look like? Individual counseling and group activities are frequent. You’ll get workshops on how to manage abstinence and reenter the workplace as well as reduce relapse risks. These classes are critical components of residential care to equip you with the skills needed for long term recovery.
What Outpatient Rehab Does HealthSmart Cover?
Your insurance plans may use HealthSmart to offer three classes of outpatient rehabilitation: Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) along with general outpatient care.
PHP is the most intensive outpatient treatment form. You attend almost full time for 5 to 6 days a week but go home at night and on weekends. People tend not to work during treatment due to the time commitment.
An IOP has a much more flexible schedule — many require 9 hours of treatment over three days. You can often choose between morning and evening treatment so you can manage work or school obligations. General outpatient care meets for one or two hours a week to help you sustain long term outcomes.
Outpatient programs aim to help solidify the habits that are foundational to long term recovery and prevent relapse through targeted therapies that empower you to establish yourself in an independent and productive life. Aftercare services are intended to strengthen your support networks and connect you to essential services like housing support.
Before starting an outpatient treatment, double check your insurance coverage. Self funded plans may vary widely in benefits and limits as well as requirements for outpatient rehab.
Does HealthSmart Cover Methadone & Suboxone (MAT)?
If your insurance plan covers medication assisted treatment (MAT) it can be a valuable therapeutic resource for overcoming alcohol and opioid abuse disorders.
Once someone becomes opioid dependent specialized management by a licensed clinic may be required for safe addiction recovery. Methadone or buprenorphine are medications that assist in managing cravings to help you avoid relapse during treatment. Other medications available may include naltrexone and Suboxone.
Alcohol dependence is also a viable candidate for MAT as clinicians utilize medication in the initial detox phase to counteract withdrawal symptoms from stopping consumption. Acamprosate and naltrexone are therapeutic alternatives for supporting long term sobriety due to their craving reducing properties against alcohol.
MAT does not replace counseling. It is most effective as part of a holistic recovery program that endows individuals with the skills to prevent relapse.
Before starting treatment verify your insurance coverage as you may need a referral or preauthorization. Plans offer different benefits and vary in the type of medication they cover and for how long.
Does HealthSmart Cover Other Mental Healthcare?
Self funded plans are not legally required to provide mental health benefits but many do. Verify your insurance coverage before commencing treatment to avoid unexpected expenses.
Successful mental health interventions take into account each person’s unique characteristics. Treatment tends to start with assessments given by qualified professionals to determine the best type of care for every person. Some individuals may struggle with mental health issues alone and others may have addiction and mental health needs at the same time — which is known as co occuring disorders.
Substance abuse tends to happen simultaneously with mental health concerns. One million children and 22 million adults in the US are diagnosed with anxiety, depression, or mood disorders while they battle an addiction. Successful treatment in these cases requires tackling mental health and addictive behaviors at the same time to give each person the best chance of long term recovery.
The difficulties that mental health conditions cause—like sadness and mental anguish—may stimulate addictive behaviors as an escape. Substance abuse can aggravate a preexisting mental health concern or predispose someone to a mental health diagnosis. That’s why medical professionals address them together.
How Long Will HealthSmart Cover Rehab?
Your insurance plan will determine coverage limits and requirements for specific benefits so check with your benefits specialist or plan paperwork to find out if there are specific limits on addiction treatment.
Care length is not predetermined but rather depends on your individual medical needs and what parts of the continuum of care you need.
Typically residential care provides 24 hour supervision, and patients stay for a few days to a few weeks. Care averages 30 days but some people stay for as many as 90 days. An IOP provides 9 hours of treatment divided over 3 days each week for 30 to 90 days.
General outpatient programs are most successful when a person commits to them for at least 90 days but they can last 6 months or even a year if a medical professional considers it necessary.
Long term recovery depends on embracing each step of your treatment journey. Enjoy each step of the process and complete them with diligence—they will increase your chances of creating the life you dream of.
Does Addiction Treatment Need to Be In Network?
Self funded plans vary in their benefits much more than standard plans. However if they use HealthSmart the network will be a preferred provider organization (PPO). A PPO does provide some coverage for out of network care so your plan may include some coverage for non network providers.
Nevertheless, even if coverage is included you’ll pay far more out of pocket. You’ll have much higher deductibles and coinsurance or copayments.
Always verify with HealthSmart coverage and network status before starting any treatment. In network providers will always be the best way to get the most out of your insurance’s benefits and keep your expenses under control.
What to Do if HealthSmart Won't Cover the Cost of Rehab
Your addiction treatment options may be more limited in a self funded plan and you might encounter less comprehensive benefits — but do not let these circumstances be a reason to avoid seeking the care you need.
Some treatment centers award scholarships or offer sliding scales of fees based on income or payment plans to facilitate treatment. You can proactively reach out to them and ask.
Another option is to get creative. Low cost and even free rehabs exist. The Salvation Army runs programs where you can work instead of paying and your county or state may also operate free or low cost alternatives.
The investment you make today in recovery can become the stepping stone to building a better future.
