The ONLY reason I’m even giving this place a star is because it is a beautiful location, the food was good, and I met some amazing individuals. That is it. Otherwise, this place is a joke. I didn’t see my therapist until I was three weeks in, despite me constantly asking to see her sooner. Your room was locked during the day, so you had no access to your things even if you had an emergency. Meds were constantly mixed up or messed up; when brought to the attention of the nurses, most of them would look down on you and ignore whatever you had to say. I had a certificate to get new glasses that I had left in my vehicle, but they took it upon themselves to take it They searched my vehicle upon admission. Then it was a whole fiasco when I needed to use it and I couldn’t find it. Come to find out it was in my file when they shouldn’t have taken it in the first Place. The advertised family time that they have is a joke, as family was not allowed to visit. They were understaffed, so therefore unable to complete Activities, transportation, or appointments. Since I was not receiving the help that I needed regarding therapy and social services., I had requested to leave after being there for 30 days to get help elsewhere. I was told to speak to the director, as my therapist refused to sign off on it. After I explained my Concerns to the director, telling him that I was not receiving the help that I was promised, and that I was upset over the lack of communication and the misinformation I had received, all he did was apologize and tell me that I couldn’t go. I told him it was within my rights to leave and that I wanted my car keys.. It was then he raised his voice at me, and told me that he would call the police if I made an attempt. I asked to call a family member, to which I was denied. He asked me to leave his office, but I refused, telling him the only way I Would leave it if he would give me my car keys so I could go. He threatened to call the police, he told me my insurance wouldn’t cover My treatment if I did leave, and that I was to stay longer than intended because I was obviously mentally unstable. He wouldn’t listen to what I was trying to say, and he kept screaming at me to the point I had to call in another staff member into the office to witness the encounter. He didn’t like that so well, and reluctantly gave me the go ahead to leave. I would never recommend that place to anyone! You don’t get the help that you need, you are ignored, you are misinformed, and they hold you against your will. The only positive experience I had there Was the awesome peers that I now call good friends. Most of the staff there are bullies, and they will use scare tactics to lie to you and deny you the services that were promised. Avoid this place at all costs! There are better treatment centers out there with staff that genuinely cares and listens to your needs.

I was so impressed with Skywood in so many ways. My husband went through Skywood and not only has it given him his life back, but they were so supportive all along the way and even after discharge. Although we had some challenges with our insurance, Skywood was so helpful in walking us through the ups and downs with our insurance company and making sure my husband got the care he needed. Thanks Skywood!

Accepted Insurance

Skywood Recovery works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one’s body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. Detoxification is really only the first stage of addiction treatment. Medically supervised detoxification is a huge benefit of residential treatment, as around-the-clock care can help ease any withdrawal symptoms and ensure that the individual’s body systems are healthy and working properly. Often, substance use leads to severe neglect of health and nutrition. Residential care offers nutritional support, health monitoring and wellness options that outpatient treatment cannot offer.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA). At Skywood, participation in 12-Step or similiar programs is voluntary. Their goal is to expose patients to different peer support recovery methods and allow them to choose what works best for them.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
While many people know it as "day treatment", a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers treatment during the day and allows you to live at home. PHP treatment typically requires a commitment of at least 20 hours of treatment every week, with a program duration that spans approximately 90 days. While commuting is necessary, some programs offer telehealth options. PHP treatment plans usually include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Michigan provides personalized treatment to help individuals break this cycle and regain control of their lives. Treatment methods are used in various levels of care, including inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and standard outpatient treatment.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CMT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse. During a CBT session, patients are shown how to think and behave in ways that will help them reach their self-stated goals. Patients can “unlearn” their unwanted reactions and choose new responses to their thoughts and feelings.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself. So much of treatment is verbal—discussing issues and talking through problems and barriers to sobriety. A non-verbal option like art therapy can provide a welcomed break as well as fresh insights and a new perspective.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction. Skywood’s Equine Therapy program takes place at the prestigious Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center in nearby Augusta, Michigan. Opened in 1970, the Cheff Center offers therapy services and therapeutic riding year-round, striving to focus on what individuals can accomplish, not on what they cannot. Not only do they offer Equine Therapy and other programs for specialty populations, they also serve as an international training and education center for therapeutic riding programs.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation. At Skywood, they have an emphasis on bringing families together for counseling and quality time that can benefit both patients and their loved ones. This is accomplished with the help of a qualified therapist who can influence positive discussion and promote a healing environment. As the family members learn about addiction and mental health conditions, they gain a new understanding of how they themselves can heal and support the recovery process.

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members. Group therapy offers a safe space where each individual can connect to others who are on the same journey. Even difficult addiction histories can benefit from a supportive group of peers in the right environment. Group therapy is led by experienced and licensed mental health care and recovery professionals.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy meant to be short-term and comprehensive. It was intended to help clients become more self-sufficent and move forward without the need for expensive, ongoing therapy. It includes an emotional self-help method called “rational self-counseling,” the purpose of which is to give clients all the skills needed to handle future emotional issues by themselves, or with significantly less professional help.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Skywood saved my life. The treatment is fantastic if you give it a chance. The staff is kind and caring and they really set you up for success after you leave. I just celebrated 6 years of sobriety and truly don’t think I would have gotten to this point without the tools and knowledge gained from Skywood.

My husband recently completed a stay at Skywood. He returned home feeling mentally stronger & is genuinely grateful for many aspects of the program. That said, our experience was filled with miscommunications, inconsistent policies, & a lack of transparency that left us frustrated & at times, deeply concerned. 1. We were told prior to admission that the stay typically lasts 2–4 weeks, & “rarely more than 30 days.” On day one he was informed everyone is placed on a 45-day plan. This unexpected shift made us feel misled & set a concerning tone. 2. Despite advertising individualized treatment, my husband only received one 1:1 therapy session per week, even after indicating on his intake forms that he preferred more. The program is heavily group-based & follows a generalized structure, which didn’t match what is advertised. 3. My husband brought prescribed supplements in original, mostly sealed containers, based on recent bloodwork showing deficiencies. None were allowed, supposedly due to potential medication interactions—even though he had made it clear he didn’t plan to take prescription meds. It was frustrating to see health needs disregarded, especially in a facility that claims to take a holistic approach. Staff also lacked knowledge—one nurse didn’t understand the difference between folate and folic acid, critical for those with methylation issues. 4. Patients were told leaving “Against Medical Advice” (AMA) could cause insurance to refuse coverage. This wasn’t true in our case (we confirmed with BCBS). It felt like a scare tactic. When transitioning to PHP, my husband was told he’d owe $50/day out of pocket. Upon discharge, staff asked him to pay $250 upfront, yet insurance ultimately covered everything. Patients are not given the tools or access to verify coverage while in treatment, which feels manipulative & unfair. 5.A concerning policy was that expressing frustrations or a desire to leave early would result in the loss of phone privileges. This put my husband in a difficult position—he felt compelled to appear fully compliant out of fear of losing his only connection to his support system. For ex, when he transitioned to PHP, he was told by his therapist, Mark, he would need to remain for another 3 weeks. Feeling discouraged, we developed a thoughtful discharge plan & notified staff on a Monday that he would be leaving on a Wednesday. Shortly afterward, his phone privileges were removed & his status was changed to AMA. When Mark called me to discuss the situation, I shared our concerns, including the fear my husband had about speaking openly due to the threat of losing privileges. Mark responded by saying that this wasn’t how things were handled—though in our case, it was. The discrepancy between what was stated & what actually happened was troubling. Also, it wasn’t until my husband told them he was leaving that his therapist informed my husband of the option to do PHP from the outpatient facility in Royal Oak, which would have allowed him to return home each evening. This was the first time this option had been mentioned. It was frustrating to learn that such an important alternative wasn’t discussed sooner— Mark later said he hadn’t known it was available until consulting a patient care coordinator, which was alarming to us, considering the therapists are the one who make these decisions of your care and treatment. There seems to be a lack of comms & disorganization across the staff as well. 7.After planning a Fri discharge w/ the therapist & team, we were abruptly told it had been moved to Sat with no explanation. I called Mark, who purposefully didn’t return my call (he told my husband he wasn't going to). He then left for vacation without clarifying the decision to me/my husband. Thankfully, a staff member, Melissa stepped in & resolved the issue professionally proving Fri was indeed possible. My husband benefited from his stay but was overshadowed by inconsistencies, unclear policies, & lack of professionalism.

I met some of the mot wonderful people at skywood. My nervous system was finally able to be at ease, for the first time in my life. I spent a lot of time walking the trails. They are so peaceful. I'm sad to say, the Manager Angie kept me against my will for almost an additional week. I would have left on foot or against medical advice ( ama ), but I did not want to burden my family with any added cost that would have lead to if insurance didn't cover what we had planned on. She dismissed my concerns, requests and demand to leave. If it had not been for her neglectful use of power, I would give Skywood a much better rating. Angie was cruel and insensitive and it was definitely not a clean place. However, the rest of the staff was wonderful, the food was amazing and I got most of what I needed. I hope Skywood addresses the issues Angie is causing there. It's very sad to see so many patience suffering unnecessarily, at her hand. There are people of all sorts seeking help there. Skywood is not a place to cause more suffering and trauma. Patients are there to recover and heal. I am forever grateful to all the staff and fellow patients who aided to my healing experience at skywood.

My loved one went here and overall, the experience was good for him. However, apparently they didn’t have enough therapy room space to conduct therapy sessions in an appropriate room for someone going through a major event. Instead he had to do therapy in a tiny office with several disruptions and distractions considering it was located in the detox unit. I’m happy with the progress he made, but I feel it was hindered by the circumstances surrounding the lack of space and disorganization, as he said it was hard to concentrate and get comfortable.

This place was so welcoming and really takes the time to meet everyone of their patients needs! Of course there things your not going to like about a place some may complain about the food or the beds. At the end of the day this place has the best STAFF. Every staff that I interacted with takes the time to really help you! They provide such great classes and resources for people to gather tools to be able to maintain sobriety ! I was sooo scared soooo scared I can remember my first night in the detox room i wouldnt leave out of there, the staff would check on me and talk with me to help me through the process. They try their best to make things fun and engaging for everyone. I recommend this place to anyone who is in need of in patient care. I loveddddd Angie, Laura C, Andy, Sharon and Rose!!! There are so many more but those select people go above and beyond for their patients 😬

Saved my life! Comfortable, good food, and everyone seems to care a lot about the patients. Sabrina is the best PCC I've ever worked with. Angie is great too she gave me a vape when I had ran out of cigarettes for the week but besides that she is there for you whenever you need something. I learned so much from Dr Taylor. If you need help this is the best place in Michigan IMO

I thought that the therapist and guest therapist were totally awesome. I learned a great deal while I was there from them! The women in the business office, some of the nurses, and a couple of the RAs are less than desirable. Some should not be working in that kind of environment! They do have a few nurses and a couple RAs that made me feel comfortable! The cleanliness is less than desirable, but you can clean it yourself, but shouldn't have to. The RAs office is very disgusting! Some RAs spend too much time on their phone when they could be cleaning their office area! I will recommend Skywood for anyone looking to get help! Some of this stuff needs to be taken care of and hopefully will be. Please don't let any of what I put on here make you not want to go! I just want you to know of some of the other things so your not surprised! The treatment part is fabulous and you will learn so many things. The grounds are beautiful and they have things you can do outside in the summer time. The food was ok but not sure if they know how to steam vegetables or make noodles lol. Everyone loved the duck, lamb, and fish. I liked the swordfish. No duck or lamb for me lol. If you have a special diet, the chef will take care of you. If you dont like something that they are making for dinner, let them know in the morning so they have time to make you something If I ever needed to go back "which I pray I never do," I will definitely go to skywood! The other residents that I met were great. No judgement from others for sure. We were all there for the same reason and we all lifted each other up! Very different from the outside world! If you are a smoker, you can go outside and smoke. You get 15 min for a phone call or calls, but only 15 min. You can work for points and get an hour pass on your own cell phone. Then when you go PHP you get your phone 3-4 hrs a night depending if it's a weekend or weekday! Please just go and get help! The therapists are outstanding!!
