My husband is handicap and he was assalted by a drunk man outside Baumhower restaurant. He was taken there by the ambulance. He had broken arm with exposed bone losing a lot of blood. He had a concussion and a cut in the forehead. He was treated like a indigent at Thomas hospital the 3 days he stayed there. They neither gave him a shower during his stay nor cleaned him up.. The orthopedic doctor did the surgery that all what they did. They neither stitched the cut on his face nor clean the blood on his face and his hand after the surgery. He had to ask them for wipes to clean himself. They send him home with no regard to his condition. It took him almost 3 months for his mind to come back and act normal. He was alone and they send him home with nobody to help him. I was in Brazil and i call the hospital to complain the treatment he had. They call me back and try to send a help after 4 days. The staff and the nurses do not do their work. They neither care about anybody nor do for what they are paid for. They just getting worse and worse. Care about patient reviews but nothing do to improve. They need better administration. Unfortunately I was away because If I was there with him I would had make a noise. I speak up and do accept lazy people not doing their job. I DO NOT RECOMMENED THOMAS HOSPITAL.

Care is fine. The billing office and administration care nothing about that though. For them it is never about you, the patient. It's about your wallet.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Inpatient rehab is designed primarily for clients exiting detox, people in early recovery, and those at an elevated risk of relapse. Participants reside at the rehab facility until they complete their treatment program. This allows them to focus solely on their recovery, away from outside distractions, stressors, and addiction triggers. Inpatient drug rehab typically involves extensive addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and complementary therapies.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Alabama provides medical or psychotherapeutic treatment for drug dependency. Methods of treatment often include a combination of medication, counseling, and recreational therapies.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Accreditations

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Established in 1992 by congress, SAMHSA's mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on American's communities.

We were on vacation and my husband needed to go to the ER. Im from the area and Thomas Hospital was the only one I really knew of. The experience we had was over the top. Cristi Vaughn and Elizabeth Michon were so friendly and kind hearted. Made us feel like they have known us forever. They both took such great care of my husband. If we didn’t live seven hours away we would definitely use this hospital. On a different note. I was born there so I have a special spot for this place. When my dad had his stroke many years ago, the staff was so kind and loving. I highly recommend Thomas Hospital.

A male ER nurse just yelled at my friend who has been in the ER for hours in agony with abdominal pain from cancer. She was begging for pain medicine which she'd been without for hours and the male nurse YELLED at her . It completely shocked me. She was sobbing, asking why she wasn't getting any meds because it had been hours and she was in horrible pain while feeling sick. And he just completely snapped at her and yelled that he was going as fast as he can and that she just had to wait. I was completely stunned. I then tried to explain to him that she has been in this kind of pain for hours. And he literally rolled his at me and with tone said he was just trying to help. He was an assisting nurse who was helping our head nurse. Who yells at someone with late stage terminal cancer in agony with pain and nausea?!

The ER staff was incredible. Megan the nurse was awesome. Recovery on the 4th floor however (apart from the nurse Colin, who was wonderful) ... they made me walk out after abdominal surgery. No wheelchair offered. Which I was under the impression it is protocol to be wheeled out. The nurse forgot to and never removed my IV, I had to do it myself. The discharge nurse was terribly rude. All in all, very subpar for this supposed "great" hospital.

Absolutely the worst and most rude nursing staff that we have experienced out of all the hospital experiences in my life!! Obviously they don’t care for the patients! I can’t express enough how RUDE and unprofessional this staff has been! I would go into details, but it wouldn’t matter! Care and compassion DO NOT exist within the Thomas hospitals or the ER departments.

Response from the owner

I came to have a EKG tilt test and about 10 mins in I fainted then started having seizures. They stopped the test and called er department. I was in and out of seizures and the cath lad nurse ask er for a board to move me said I was kinda hefty and he didn't want to hurt his back. Reson I am so hefty is because I take 80 mg Prednisone a day . Told my husband wish I could control my seizures cause I would have gave him a right hook . By the time they got me to er I had done had about 5 more. I have a port installed due to veins being torchered after be in hospital for 36 days after a ruptured brain aneurysm and a massive cerebral stroke. Which is why I have strokes. Most of the time the are controled but today was not the day. H BP , aurger high, oxygen levels were running 86-93. Normal hospitals list on how to access my port. One nurse stated she had trauma from working in cancer center other nurse would let me move so she could access the port, tried just filled it with saline if you can't or don't want to access it then get some who can . Normal hospitals have adivant ready on the stand by earth give it in the but or port. Took an hour may a little longer to give me a pill form which is not going to do the trick fast enough.if shot doesn't get them to stop and you have another one give the second does. They more seizures you have the more damage you do to your brain. After the Aneurysm did enough damage. I don't place. I told nurse that I had had 7)8 more and needed another adivant. She told me the Dr knew.Dr came in as asking if I felt like going home and I explained what was going on she told nurse to give me more adivant that nurse took about 20 mins. Dr was great she seen what was happening and in her eyes thought she had me going. By the time nurse came in I had already taken IV out heart leads off and put wixk off and was dressed. She ask me what I was doing told her I just needed to make it to my truck and I would take my adivant. I keep some in every car just in case I need one even though I take 1500 mg keppre 2x a day. Sometimes I have them even after taking meds. I know y'all are busy leave room door open so you or someone can see and get help. Oh that's right a lab technician did twice and my husband her then say we know ,just leave her. Thomas Hospital ER Nurse do better even if you so want to be there that day.
