To: Patient Relations / Risk Management Department Re: Formal Complaint Regarding Patient Care – Jackson South Medical Center To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding the care I received at Jackson South Medical Center during my admission from Tuesday the 26th 2026 through the day of discharge (today). During my hospitalization, i received conflicting information from charge nurses, social worker, nurses etc. I was highly uncomfortable with the entire unit as a whole. Besides the AMAZING Doctors; Doctor A. Beech & Doctor A. Gerardo Alvarez’ they deserve THE MOST PRAISE! Only they made me feel safe and secure and were EXTREMELY professional! With excellent level of CLASS! So for them I give a 10/10!! .. All In all, this complaint is in regard to the last 2 days before I was discharged. Keep in mind it seemed like they didn’t want to discharge me and was holding me hostage even after giving me a discharge date and telling me I was good to go. blaming the doctors, my insurance, it was a big mess!! I developed approximately four pressure-related injuries (bed sores), consisting of two small and two medium-sized wounds located along my back. These were not properly communicated to me during my stay, and I was not made aware of their severity until I was already experiencing significant pain. A nurse later informed me that at least one of the ulcers had opened and stated that “the skin broke.” This information was not disclosed to me in a timely or appropriate manner, which raises serious concerns about transparency and patient communication. Additionally, lidocaine patches were applied to my back without any clear explanation of the underlying condition or the severity of my skin breakdown. I only became aware of the extent of the issue after informing my boyfriend that I was in pain, at which point he visually confirmed the presence of the wounds. I then requested for “either silicone cream or zinc ointment” to treat it. I was further informed by nursing staff that the condition was serious enough to require reporting. This raises additional concern that appropriate preventative care, monitoring, and communication may not have been adequately provided during my hospitalization. Overall, I feel there was a serious lack of transparency, communication, and attention to patient safety. I am deeply concerned about how this was managed and believe this situation reflects poor standards of care. At this time, I am requesting a formal review of my case, including how these pressure injuries developed, why they were not communicated to me earlier, and what steps will be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Hence, there was no bed baths given for 9 days! I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and request a written response regarding the outcome of your review. Sincerely, Natasha M.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Outpatient rehabs encompass multiple levels of care to facilitate clients' progress through their recovery journey. Clients who are stepping down from inpatient treatment may require intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment, which involves more frequent and substantive therapeutic interventions than does standard outpatient care. Outpatient centers typically provide extensive addiction counseling, including individual, group, and family therapy. Medication assisted treatment programs (MAT) and recovery-focused life skills training are also common in outpatient care.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Rehab aftercare programs are a collection of highly individualized services designed to promote long-term recovery. These services evolve as your needs change. Case managers and recovery teams typically begin formulating the rehab aftercare service plan early in the recovery process to facilitate your reintegration back into the home, workplace, and community.

12 step programs support recovery through emotional, psychological, and spiritual development to address the root causes of addiction. These programs are peer directed, with participants regularly attending 12 step meetings, which are anonymous, free, and accessible day and night, year-round. Recovery is based on "working the steps" to understand the source of addiction, take accountability for one's life choices, and relinquish control for that which cannot be changed. Age-specific, gender-separate, and other specialized programs are widely available.

Often referred to as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers an intensive treatment option that allows individuals to return home at night. PHP treatment typically requires a minimum of 20 hours a week for an average of 90 days. Participants attend daily therapeutic sessions, receive medication management, and have access to skilled medical professionals. While costs can vary, most insurance will fully or partially cover a partial hospitalization program.

If a person with a substance use disorder continually denies their problem or refuses to get treatment, a drug intervention in Florida may be necessary. Intervention services can help mediate the intervention by providing an addiction expert. This professional can de-escalate situations and facilitate a healthier discussion between the individual and their loved ones. Specialists can also help families handle issues they don't know how to navigate on their own.

The first step of the recovery process involves the removal of all drugs and alcohol from your system while under 24/7 medical supervision. Known as a medically assisted detox, you are closely monitored by medical staff who can provide medications, if necessary, to help alleviate any potential withdrawal symptoms. Medical detox is usually followed by a period of inpatient addiction treatment.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

When a person has alcohol use disorder (AUD), also referred to as alcoholism or alcohol addiction, they experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop drinking. This physical dependence results from overuse of alcohol, which may be used as a coping mechanism or escape. Individuals who have AUD can overcome the alcohol addiction through alcohol rehab in Florida. This treatment process involves essential therapy and supports to help the individual achieve and maintain recovery.

Drug rehab in Florida provides quality treatment to help individuals overcome dependency related to a wide range of addictive substances. Programs address both the physical and mental aspects of addiction in order to help you make a full recovery.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.

Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical behavior therapy in Florida consists of individual therapy and group instruction. This structured program is a form of psychotherapy that incorporates the development of skills for managing emotions and relationships.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Our overall experience at the hospital was very satisfactory during an incredibly difficult time for our family. After our young daughter was hit by a car and required cervical spine surgery, the entire team provided excellent care. The neurosurgery team was outstanding, demonstrating professionalism, expertise, and compassion throughout her treatment and recovery. We would especially like to recognize Trauma nurse Dayana for the exceptional care she provided. She was attentive to every detail, genuinely cared for our daughter, and kept our family informed and supported during a very stressful situation. Her compassion extended beyond her job. By coincidence, we saw her on the day of our daughter’s discharge, and even though she was no longer caring for our daughter, she recognized us and took the time to help her get into the car. She is an extraordinary nurse whose kindness, dedication, and commitment to her patients truly stand out. We are deeply grateful to her, the neurosurgery team, and the entire hospital staff for the excellent care our daughter received. Thank you for making a difficult experience much easier for our family. ❤️

Go to a Baptist hospital, don't bother coming here if you care about your health. This hospital used to be so well, 10 years ago. Now?... Absolutely terrible. About a week ago, me and my family had to send my aunt to the ER because we were told by Baptist Urgent Care across the street that they were concerned she was having stroke-like symptoms and advised to go to an ER hospital IMMEDIATELY. The Baptist Urgent Care called the hospital and told us that someone was waiting for us there at this hospital ... when I told them about this and gave them the nurses name from the Baptist Urgent Care, every nurse in the ER Unit was lost and didn't know what I was talking about. All the nurses in the ER unit were pleasant, but there was ONE particular Nurse in the ER Unit that had a SERIOUS attitude problem.. I mean REALLY BAD. I didn't get her name, but she had black glasses with short black hair with some grey hair, a slightly older nurse. Light brown, melanin skin tone. This particular Nurse gives VERY SLICK, yet Subtle rude comments/statements when speaking to her patients. And I understand the amount of hard work it is being a Nurse ... but if a career/job/profession is making you like that... please do everyone a favor and LEAVE.
