About Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health

Located in North Charleston, South Carolina, is Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health. They provide accessible, person focused services to help you work through behavioral health struggles impacting your life, whether it’s challenges with substance abuse or struggles with your mental health.

They provide accessible, age appropriate treatment for adolescents, adults, and seniors through inpatient and outpatient settings. Medically supervised detox and chemical dependency programs are also available here. I like that they have a virtual outpatient program for more accessible care.

Calming Recovery Environment

The facility is expansive and features a calming and quiet place for you to work through the issues you’re facing. The building is somewhat dated in style, and although they don’t have an array of bells and whistles to beckon you in, you’ll find the care team here is compassionate, kind, and will be with you throughout your time in residential treatment.

The building has a hospital-like feel to it, and there’s a really big focus on safety and security. For example, this is a no touch facility, and visitations are limited to certain times, must occur in the designated visiting common area, and there are restrictions on former patients visiting current patients.

Specialty Recovery Programs for Veterans

Their military treatment program is designed specifically for military veterans and service members who are battling life challenges brought on by substance abuse, trauma, or other behavioral health issues. They partner with military treatment facilities and can provide specialized support that addresses the unique challenges you’re battling.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

My wife has a stay at this facility. The conditions are appalling, and no one seems to be concerned. Having adequate facilities, to remain clean and hygienic are basic needs...even in facilities such a PLBH. During my wife's stay, she was denied clean facilities in which to shower. She shared that for 2 days of her stay there were feces covered scrubs in her shower unit, and Noone was made to remove them, or sanitize the area. This is totally unacceptable. I will be reaching out to higher members of the health organization in the meantime. If any is thinking of allowing a loved one to seek treatment there...I would advise against it... Disgusting...

Response from the owner
Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us with your concerns. We take your comments very seriously and would like to learn more about your wife’s concerns. Due to federal patient privacy laws, we can only discuss care with a patient or guardian; however, we encourage your wife to reach out to us directly by visiting http://www.palmettobehavioralhealth.com/contact-us/. Again, thank you.

There is not one part of this place that I’d recommend to even my worst enemy. The staff, leadership, billing department, etc. are all AWFUL, incompetent and it is a disgrace that the state of South Carolina has not put them out of business. I actually tried writing to the state agency and am ashamed that I never even heard back. Likely because this state does not care about nor prioritize mental health services. Many years ago, when I needed help for my own mental health, I did not feel supported by their staff. I was kicked out of a voluntary outpatient program with barely any warning and for basically no legitimate reason. It was helping me. I enjoyed the other people in the program. But I wasn’t a super quiet, ultra depressed, zombie patient and that’s the kind of patient they want in their programs. I was forced to leave and seek new options and in a worse mental state than before. They tried making me pay for an entire program that I didn’t experience because I stupidly paid upfront. I was able to argue via my bank / with them on multiple occasions, refusing to lose a battle I knew I deserved to win, and eventually received all of my money back. Even after the situation was settled and they agreed to refund me, their billing team accidentally kept following up with me a handful of times for payment. It was an ongoing nightmare. I do not believe they care about people’s well being and are only after $$$. Please go anywhere else if you need help. I’ve had actual PTSD related nightmares of the idea of anyone ever forcing me to go back there (even though I was a voluntary patient). Never again.
