About Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health

Located in North Charleston, South Carolina, is Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health. They provide accessible, person focused services to help you work through behavioral health struggles impacting your life, whether it’s challenges with substance abuse or struggles with your mental health.

They provide accessible, age appropriate treatment for adolescents, adults, and seniors through inpatient and outpatient settings. Medically supervised detox and chemical dependency programs are also available here. I like that they have a virtual outpatient program for more accessible care.

Calming Recovery Environment

The facility is expansive and features a calming and quiet place for you to work through the issues you’re facing. The building is somewhat dated in style, and although they don’t have an array of bells and whistles to beckon you in, you’ll find the care team here is compassionate, kind, and will be with you throughout your time in residential treatment.

The building has a hospital-like feel to it, and there’s a really big focus on safety and security. For example, this is a no touch facility, and visitations are limited to certain times, must occur in the designated visiting common area, and there are restrictions on former patients visiting current patients.

Specialty Recovery Programs for Veterans

Their military treatment program is designed specifically for military veterans and service members who are battling life challenges brought on by substance abuse, trauma, or other behavioral health issues. They partner with military treatment facilities and can provide specialized support that addresses the unique challenges you’re battling.

It was a place when my son needed assistance. They threw away my sons bag when they couldn't find it when he was leaving, then when he returned when they called to say they found it., they had already thrown it away.

Hiya!! This last year I was admitted, horrible place. Awful staff, doctors and social workers. Personally, I watched a girl be sedated then left to sit in a chair with her chin and head tucked between her knees, with little respirations, the Dr who d administered these meds then continued to freak out on how both her blood pressure and respiratory rate was down. Simply left her there. Along with leaving me in a room with a roommate threatening to fight everyone including me, they simply weren t sure if they could move me into a new room! We can t forget the nurses and staff telling those that they could never be model with all those scars. Overall we d waist time, we did very few things of any production. We were forced to be confined with highly destructive and dangerous children. Throwing things, putting holes in the walls with her head, and not interfering because she will or should calm down on her own. The place was also disgusting and overall nurses and doctors are overworked and underpaid, so much so they have started reflecting the atmosphere of their work environment. They have projected their emotions that children or anyone in such condition should have to face.Maybe think abt sending your kid here !!

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Terrible facility! The kids do not see a doctor and or psychiatrist but only once every day. Their “therapist” barely have a bachelors degree. The people who are in charge of your children’s “therapy lessons” are merely LPN’s. Their “therapy lessons” conclude of “word searches with emotional words in them” or “the telephone game about your emotions”. No one gets to the root of any issue . When I visited there was a child in a ball on the floor scratching her wrist to bits while the nurses and therapists walked right past her like she was invisible. It was dirty and I found a paper clip open on the windowsill. Your child ONly has 10mins to call you in a single day no matter if another family member has called them or not. The staff was rude 8x out of 10 every time I called. I called 3 days in a row about getting an update about my child and only on day 4 did I get a call back. DO NOt SENd YOur CHild HEre!!!

This place is an absolute disgrace. Today, they turned away a loved one that has been struggling with very serious addictions (for almost a decade) who was FINALLY willing to seek help. They were denied access to inpatient services because they were not 'physically withdrawing' when they arrived. What a joke. People are willing to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket for life-saving help and this place is actively turning those people away.

Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us with your concerns. We take your comments very seriously and would like to learn more about your loved one’s concerns. Due to federal patient privacy laws, we can only discuss care with a patient or guardian; however, we encourage your loved one to reach out to us directly by visiting http://www.palmettobehavioralhealth.com/contact-us/. Again, thank you.

Aside from some very sweet staff, the experience was tolerable at best. There were gnats and bugs due to the overstuffed garbage, the common area was dirty, and housekeeping hardly ever cleaned anything. They had to be begged to clean the carpet! This place was dehumanizing and isolating. As soon as I left, the facility was asking about payment! The saving grace was the group I was admitted with. DON'T COME HERE!!!

I just wanted to get on here and tell everyone my experience at this facility! I have a lot of life things that had come to a point where everything started overflowing, and I needed a break away from everything, and everyone else, to focus on myself for a minute! I started in the Trauma IOP group here, and I cannot begin to tell you how much it did for me! I worked with one of their trauma therapists, Connor! She was hands down, the best trauma therapist I have ever had the pleasure of working with! She was incredible! She had so much information and knowledge that she shared with me that helped me more, in that short amount of time I was able to be there, than anyone ever has. I highly recommend this facility, and their counselors and supporting staff…the nurse, the psychiatrist, the other counselors were amazing as well….even down to the business office, as well as the individuals who did my intake! I am so grateful that I was fortunate to be with them all, through what for me, was a most difficult time! I will never forget them, or that facility!

Worst Rehab/Behavioral Health Facility ever. Other than Dr C and a few other staff, patient care sucked, food was horrible and cold and constantly changing rules. My Son hated it.

Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health – A Masterclass in Dehumanization If you’re looking for actual mental health care, Palmetto is NOT the place to go. If you want to be treated like a liability rather than a human, ignored when you need help but hounded for money the second you’re out, then congratulations—you’ve found the perfect place. What to Expect: • Total Dehumanization: You’re not a person here; you’re a problem to be managed, locked up, and forgotten until discharge. • Involuntary Detention, Zero Real Care: You might go in expecting help. What you get is a sterile, prison-like environment where staff barely acknowledge you unless they have to. • Nonexistent Communication: Need something while you’re admitted? Good luck getting an answer. But the moment you’re out? They’ll call your family non-stop—for money. • Pay to Suffer: The only time Palmetto cares is when they’re chasing you down for a bill. Because apparently, your trauma isn’t complete without medical debt. Bottom Line: Palmetto isn’t a mental health facility—it’s a containment center with a billing department. If you actually need help, go to MUSC’s Institute of Psychiatry. If you end up at Palmetto, brace yourself—because the worst part isn’t being inside. It’s realizing that once you’re out, they’ll treat you worse.
