About Saint Judes Recovery Center – Family Care Center – Closed

St. Jude’s Recovery Center was a drug rehab that provides care to adults and transitional age adults in Atlanta, Georgia. It is now called Ascenda Health and has moved to a new location in the city. Specialized support was also offered here to veterans and individuals with HIV or AIDS as well as those with histories of trauma, sexual abuse, or domestic violence.

Court-referred clients, as well as pregnant and post-partum individuals, were also accommodated. Medicaid, as well as federal and government funding for substance abuse programs, was accepted here. Private health plans and self-pay were also accepted with payment assistance available to those eligible.

Residential Addiction Treatment in Georgia’s Capital

For structured and supportive care, individuals with more severe substance abuse issues may have benefitted from the center’s residential treatment program. Inpatient rehab offered intensive care and supervision to anyone needing more focused attention and support.

Dual diagnosis treatment was integrated to ensure residents’ mental health issues were addressed alongside their addiction for rounded, comprehensive support.

Aftercare was also included. Options like sober living accommodations were available as well as career counseling to help set clients up for success post-recovery. Access to ongoing support groups was also an option to help you maintain sobriety and access community and accountability amongst your peers.

A Comprehensive Approach to Treating Substance Abuse in Atlanta

Parents were also accommodated here with beds and childcare available for their children. Meanwhile, in terms of treatment methods used, you could have expected to engage in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and trauma-related counseling.

In addition, 12-step facilitation was included as part of group therapy. Individual, family, and couples counseling were offered along with case management services.

Ive been a meth addict for 25 years and had enough of the underachieving! Seeked help only to learn what the core values of recovery integrity, honesty, and loyalty isnt always displayed by those that are teaching it! This place should be a SHAME of the way it treats people when they are thirsty for help! I understand there are rules, but i also understand walking on eggshells due to the fact that on a daily basis this place is looking for faults to kick someone out! Multiple occasions my items came up missing and although staff knew, nothing was done about it! If you want a free night of sleep and a meal or two it might be great but if your serious about recovery from addiction and becoming a better person i advise you to stay away! With a very low rating i see im not the only one!

Systemic Missteps Create Barriers to Recovery As someone who also went through the program at Ascensa Health, I have to echo many of the same concerns others have surfaced . The environment lacks the consistency, transparency, and structure that clients in early recovery deserve. Discharges often feel arbitrary and punitive rather than therapeutic—decisions are made behind closed doors without proper communication, context, or support. While there are a few standout staff members who clearly care (Mr. Tim & Daryl come to mind), others—particularly Ms. Tomorrow—consistently communicate in a way that feels dismissive and unnecessarily combative. There is a noticeable power imbalance, and instead of working collaboratively with clients, some staff double down on control, even when it undermines progress. When conflicts or concerns arise, especially involving other residents, the response is more about managing optics than providing resolution. It’s disappointing to see opportunities for real growth and healing missed because the culture doesn’t align with trauma-informed practices. This program could be impactful if it took accountability for these systemic issues and focused more on transparency, dignity, and client empowerment. Until then, I’d recommend approaching with caution and asking direct questions about policy, expectations, and appeal processes upfront.

Ascensa Health/St Jude was a lifesaving experience for me and many of my fellow housemates at the men’s residence. Top notch professional staff from intake, housing, counselors, trainers and medical team. Newsweek acknowledged this is one of the best dual diagnosis addiction & mental health treatment programs in the country! Recently graduated and living an amazing life thanks to the tools I learned. Will forever be thankful for giving me a fresh start on a positive & healthy lifestyle moving forward. Definitely proud to be apart of the Ascensa/St Jude family! It works if you work it! One day at a time! If you have a friend or family member with or without insurance who’s struggling with substance abuse or mental health issues, I HIGHLY recommend you utilize this program!

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

A quality drug rehab in Georgia can help you overcome addiction. This environment is designed to help you address the complex issues contributing to drug dependence. The goal of treatment is to give you the tools you need to make a full recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

The administration team and the detox staff are amazing Mrs. Brandy and her staff truly care about thier patients. Unfortunately the staff in long term and upper management mainly in mens residential only care about a paycheck. I drove 2 hours one way twice to be in line at 5am to get in. Long term staff in mens residential said I failed my drug test even after I passed at my doctors appointment by the main office. I'm a alcholic I definitely never did drugs when I was fortunate enough to get a bed for in patient. I think she was ms T and he was Russell I think. If your not court mandated without health insurance don't waste your time they will find a way to kick you out no matter how much you need the help to get sober.

First of let me say the administration team in admissions is wonderful. They truly care . But then comes the Detox building. Which is pure filth. It is horrible . Boogers on the walls and mold and dirt everywhere. I literally watched them strip sheets off of a bed , not clean it and put a new person on a mattress. The filth was insane . While I was there. They let two ladies in with drugs. One with an IV needle . And the second with Heroine. The way the staff talks to patients when they are at there lowest is horrific . The Friday night nurse 7/26/24. Should be fired . She is horrible . “She’s a nurse” so she knows everything . They literally tried to give me medicine that would cause my Serontonin Syndrome to get worse . The food is not food. I’m not sure what it is. People had dairy restrictions. They didn’t care. The staff will not allow you to use the phone . Mind you I had children. I gave it my best effort . But after 10 days I had an emergency and had to leave . They talked to me like pure trash and kicked me out on the street with my bags . Wouldn’t let me make a phone call. It was horrible. Mr. Willy was the only person who cared . The night staff were on there phones and computers. There were no detox classes at all. I call this the place of horrors . I will forever have PTSD from this place . I had a family member refer me here . She owns a facility. But after I explained the horrors . She let me know she would not be referring anyone else. Please go to Ridgeview Monroe or Highland Rivers. If anything. Go into the emergency room and let them find you a detox center . Do not under any circumstances go here. Unless you want to be talked to or treated like pure Garbage . I am reporting this place and the nurse who treated me so ugly. All of the detox staff needs help . Desperately. You should not leave new people alone or rude nurses when people are at there lowest . The admission staff is amazing . The Detox is horrible . Please avoid at all cost . Take it from someone who got worse over 10 days and not better . Now that I am home. I am so much better already. My dad was sick and in the hospital and they treated me like trash . Wouldn’t allow me to call him . It was terrible . I hope the Thursday , Friday , Sunday night nurse gets a good dose of reality . You need it. Detox should be ashamed of themselves.

I was unsure if my family member was a qualified rehabilitation facility ,I had read some bad reviews. It took effort to get her in.It was worth every bit of effort! She went through the detoxing,I couldn't have contact with her. When we talked for the first time I realized my prayers had been answered. She was on the road to recovery. She was so grateful she got in and was feeling better and thinking clearly. My sister's counselor Mr Dre personally called and invited and encouraged me to attend the monthly Family Day and I did. I was blown away by the professional, compassionate care the patients receive. As a family member I received counseling and tools and the information on how to take this journey of recovery with my loved one.Ascensa reassured my loved one and myself there are professional people that really care about you living a life in recovery, redemption for ever! You are not a number on a pay check, but a living soul! Thank you Ascensa!
