About Harsha Behavioral Center

Inpatient programs are typically designed to be the most intense level of care available. They often provide long term care for those with severe symptoms. However, the average stay at Harsha Behavioral Center is five to 10 days.

Why the difference? While they provide the same treatment methods as similar facilities, they operate on a shorter timetable. Their goal is to help you achieve stabilization so you can continue on to an outpatient program sooner. That way, you won’t have other areas of your life such as work or school hindered by a lengthy stay. I like this approach because it gets you back to your daily living sooner. But it’s not a fit for everyone, and if your symptoms warrant a lengthy stay you may be referred to another program.

A Transformative Stay at Harsha Behavioral Center!!! Checking into Harsha Behavioral Center was a pivotal moment in my journey with anxiety and depression. This 5-star inpatient mental health facility redefines care through its exceptional programming and compassionate staff. From day one, I was immersed in a structured, yet flexible schedule tailored to my needs, making it far more than a typical hospital stay. The programming at Harsha is outstanding, blending evidence-based therapies like CBT and DBT with innovative group sessions and holistic options such as mindfulness and music therapy. Daily one-on-one counseling with skilled therapists helped me unpack deep-rooted issues, while group activities fostered connection and support. The center also offers psychoeducation classes, teaching coping skills that empowered me to manage my mental health long-term. Every session felt purposeful, with progress tracked meticulously to ensure personalized care. Post-discharge, their comprehensive aftercare plan, including virtual follow-ups and resource referrals, ensured a smooth transition. The heart of Harsha’s excellence lies with its Chief Nursing Officer, Adam. Adam leads from the heart, and he has built a team of highly trained, empathetic nurses who are available around the clock. His leadership shines through in the staff’s attentiveness and innovative care protocols, emphasizing patient dignity. I saw him engaging with patients during rounds, creating a warm, supportive atmosphere that elevates the entire facility. My week-long stay was transformative, thanks to Harsha’s robust programming and Adam’s leadership. This isn’t just a hospital—it’s a lifeline for those seeking top-tier mental health care. This is definitely the best hospital I have been to, and I cannot imagine that there is anyplace better.

I had took my daughter there and the staff was nice and friendly set her up To be evaluating they set her up with a appointment l call to verify the appointment they gave me a different day from the day the first person game so when I call the day, they are supposed to come. They told me I was supposed to came the next day. One time l came up there in they give me a different day that’s why l call The list was open They took my Daughter of the list and told me that they have a waiting list now and I think that’s because they thought she was white. It’s a lot of places out here. They play the discrimination game and its sickening

Hi Jeanette. I'm sorry to hear this, but we do not make appointments. This is an acute inpatient hospital, so we would never set an appointment for someone. We also do not have waiting lists as we are an inpatient hospital that admits patients 24/7, unfortunately you have left this review on the wrong business page.

Extremely disappointed in the services they provided for my 8 year old just a few weeks ago. On top of the communication be basically none, he returned to my care with bruises and his glasses completely broken after his stay. I was trying to be compassionate when he told me about it, and me letting him know to advocate for his needs no matter how big or small they are. He did good at speaking up, but the staff didn't let me know any incident after it was calmed down. I requested incident reports from the head of nursing and a script for his glasses because of insurance reasons and SCHOOL STARTS SOON. I have not heard back from anybody, and at this point it feels like my calls are being intentionally dodged. My child's glasses are still not replaced by the facility, and I haven't received any incident reports for the reason he was bruised and scuffed so badly. Photos were taken, and a report will be made to the facility as a whole because how are you caring for mentally unstable CHIDLREN and NOT doing the bare minimum in communicating their care? Absolutely do not take your child here. Wait for a bed somewhere else.
Response from the owner2 weeks ago
If you could please call me 812-231-5240, I would like to look into this matter further. If and when any incident happens, that will be noted in the patients discharge paperwork as well as with a phone call made to the parent or guardian. We would not be able to write a prescription for glasses as we are a behavioral health facility and do not provide optometry. Patients are evaluated by a nurse at discharge and any incidents are gone over with the parent or guardian. Our care coordination team also contacts the parents or guardians daily for updates during a patients stay.

Accepted Insurance

Harsha Behavioral Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Illinois Department of Public Aid

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image

Seniors Program

Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.

Clinical Services

Recreational therapy integrates structured activities into a holistic treatment program to help promote your physical and mental health and well being. You might engage in sports, creative arts, or outdoor adventures as a positive outlet for your stress and emotions. This helps you develop new interests and build a supportive network that helps you maintain long term sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

As an adult with depression and anxiety, don't go there expecting miracles. You'll be surrounded with people with every kind of mental health issue, some with just severe anger issues. The medicine I brought in that was prescribed to me? Yeah, I had to wait 24 hrs so they could "verify" with my pharmacy to, I guess, make sure I don't have my own label maker with their pharmacy logo on it before I could take the medicine I've been taking since 2013. There was someone there who said the N word so many times, and you could tell that it not only hurt and angered the patients who were black, but also the workers. Not only that, a boy who was high on the spectrum heard the word so many times, he himself started saying it, and all I could do was cry while having an anxiety attack and ask why they weren't removing the racist to another part of the facility? One of the patients said he hears it all the time, but he didn't expect to hear it repeatedly in a hospital setting and nothing be done about it. Overall, I'd NEVER recommend this place to anyone. Most of the staff are overwhelmed with to much to do, which leaves their patients suffering. Also, you only get one 10 minute phone call a day, can't wear shoes, even sandals without shoestring, you can't smoke, even thought there's an outside private area for adults, and you only get to see the in-house doctor and therapist for about 5-10 minutes, without figuring out the root cause of anything while you're there. I'm sorry to the patients and staff who had to put up with that person's ignorance, and that nothing was done about it.

Response from the owner
I apologize for the experience. Our hospital policy requires verifying all medications for every patient to ensure accuracy and prevent adverse effects in the event of medication changes. This policy is not meant to imply that you personally manufactured the medication. Our hospital, like all hospitals in Indiana, maintains a smoke-free campus and building, and we offer nicotine replacement options, although I apologize if you were not notified about this. We prioritize our patients' well-being and safety, and while we have zero tolerance for slander, racial, or hate speech, our policies and procedures prohibit refusing treatment to patients based solely on their statements. Unfortunately, our facilities are limited, making it impossible to relocate patients who may be causing offense. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact me at 812-231-5240.

I stayed in the adolescent unit at Harsha Behavioral Center for 7 days, and while a few staff were kind, the overall experience was more negative than helpful. I was placed in a room with a snoring roommate and couldn’t sleep at all, which pushed me into a worse mental state, even making me feel suicidal at times. When I brought this up to staff, I was met with, “What do you want me to do about it, wake him up and tell him to stop?” a completely unhelpful and dismissive response. The MHTs (Mental Health Technicians) were doing all the actual work, while nurses mostly sat behind the desk gossiping and ignoring what was happening on the unit. Staff like Racheal, Zoie, Valerie, Kody, and Jace were really kind to me, and AJ, the MHT lead, was friendly but acted unprofessional at times. Mike, another MHT lead, was generally helpful but made a few inappropriate comments here and there, though I brushed them off. Mickey, another MHT lead, acted like he ran the whole place but was actually unhelpful; when I told him my head hurt and asked if I could lay down, he said no and didn’t even direct me to the nurse who had the authority to approve it. Many other staff were glued to their phones, cussed constantly, and openly made rude remarks behind patients’ backs, like saying “I don’t want to be around you” and laughing at people after they walked away. Bullying among patients was ignored—even when I told staff someone was calling me names and harassing me all day, they told me to “just ignore it.” When I finally snapped and mocked the kid back, I was the one punished and told “not to pull that again.” The food was hit or miss, and Jacky, one of the cafeteria workers, was rude to everyone. The therapy offered was pretty much nonexistent—Stacey, the therapist, met with me once for maybe 10 minutes and just asked some generic “are you going to hurt yourself” questions. She handed me a huge packet labeled a “substance abuse recovery pathway,” which was just a bunch of printed-out worksheets that didn’t apply to my situation at all. Groups were boring and repetitive, with the same pre-scripted coping skills being repeated daily. The only person who really tried to make groups engaging was Addison, the social worker or care coordinator, who was genuinely kind and had us play games. One thing that really frustrated me was that patients were put on UR (unit restriction) for coming back more than once or for “misbehaving,” meaning they weren’t allowed to go outside or leave the unit. I was only outside for about 20 minutes total the entire week I was there. On top of that, we weren’t allowed to shower in the morning even though it was on the schedule—and for me, a morning shower helps me feel clean and awake. They’d tell us “not right now” or “wait till later,” but then shower time never came until around 8:30. The soap and shampoo they provided made my hair fall out noticeably, and the hair brushes felt more like cleaning scrub brushes than something gentle for your scalp. The unit also had a pretty bad ant problem and lots of rolly pollies crawling around. The fire alarms went off three times during my stay, but no one was told if it was a drill or an emergency, and no one took any action; we were just made to be quiet in the hallway and walk in a straight line like we were in prison. Also, they only let you call one parent for 10 minutes total, even though the schedule said 10 minutes and there were no restrictions on who you could call. Overall, while a few staff were trying to help, the experience made me feel even more ignored, unheard, and mentally exhausted. If you or someone you care about is considering Harsha, I strongly recommend looking into other options and asking lots of questions before trusting your care to this place.

My grandson stayed 4 1/2 days. It was scary sending him someplace where we did not know anyone and did not know what to expect. He has a lot of anxiety so it must have been very difficult for him. I ended up being pleased by his care. Staff did a good job communicating. He said he was not scared. He told me his roommate had been hitting him. I told the staff and they separated them right away. I don’t expect one stay to get him well but they gave him some insights. I will be comfortable putting him in another stay at Harsha if it’s needed.

Our experience was a hard one but the people at Harsh made it much easier to manage. Through the process Michelle kept me very updated and was always there when I had a question or needed to vent. Mike one of the individuals who works with the kids is amazing. He believes in them and encourages them. I saw many interactions with Mike and my child and was beyond impressed. It warmed my heart to see them care.
