About Harsha Behavioral Center

Harsha Behavioral Center in Terre Haute, Indiana, is a physician owned psychiatric and addiction center. Their short term inpatient program is open to clients of all ages, and they have a total of 81 beds across their programs. They operate a specialized program for seniors.

Inpatient programs are typically designed to be the most intense level of care available. They often provide long term care for those with severe symptoms. However, the average stay at Harsha Behavioral Center is five to 10 days.

Why the difference? While they provide the same treatment methods as similar facilities, they operate on a shorter timetable. Their goal is to help you achieve stabilization so you can continue on to an outpatient program sooner. That way, you won’t have other areas of your life such as work or school hindered by a lengthy stay. I like this approach because it gets you back to your daily living sooner. But it’s not a fit for everyone, and if your symptoms warrant a lengthy stay you may be referred to another program.

You can't get any information about your family members without a four digital codeHow long does it take them to get there privileges back after a behavior.
Response from the owner2 months ago
Hi Robin. This is because of HIPPA laws. It is our responsibility to ensure only approved individuals receive information about a patient. That is why we require a code. This code is given at admission, and the patient or guardians will receive that code if they are on the contact list or those individuals can give it to others they allow to call. Unfortunately, in order to protect our patients and their rights, we must have a code before discussing patient care with anyone. If you need information on a patient, please ask the family member for their code and if they agree for you to receive information they can give it to you. I can be reached at 812-231-5240 if you have any other questions.

Accepted Insurance

Harsha Behavioral Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Clinical Services

Recreational therapy integrates structured activities into a holistic treatment program to help promote your physical and mental health and well being. You might engage in sports, creative arts, or outdoor adventures as a positive outlet for your stress and emotions. This helps you develop new interests and build a supportive network that helps you maintain long term sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

My grandson stayed 4 1/2 days. It was scary sending him someplace where we did not know anyone and did not know what to expect. He has a lot of anxiety so it must have been very difficult for him. I ended up being pleased by his care. Staff did a good job communicating. He said he was not scared. He told me his roommate had been hitting him. I told the staff and they separated them right away. I don’t expect one stay to get him well but they gave him some insights. I will be comfortable putting him in another stay at Harsha if it’s needed.

Our experience was a hard one but the people at Harsh made it much easier to manage. Through the process Michelle kept me very updated and was always there when I had a question or needed to vent. Mike one of the individuals who works with the kids is amazing. He believes in them and encourages them. I saw many interactions with Mike and my child and was beyond impressed. It warmed my heart to see them care.

Michelle at Harsha Behavioral Center has been amazing through this tough time with my 16yr old son. She has guided me through this process, and is helping getting my son the long term treatment that he needs. She went above and beyond to communicate with me, working with my schedule, transportation needs etc. Any hurdle we have had she has helped us overcome it. We are still currently working with Harsha Behavioral Center until the goal is met to reach his long term needs. He always talks about how nice everyone is at Harsha, and how safe he feels there. The help we received, and help with follow up care again means so much. Thank you Harsha Behavioral Center, and special thank you to Michelle.

So, my 7 year old had a week long stay here. I didn't know what to expect, nobody told me what they would be doing with him or what he'd be sleeping in, with whom etc. I left my child there in clean clothes, with several outfits and offered them the toothpaste he preferred due to his autism. They refused it several times, guess who said he didn't brush his teeth and it showed in the way his mouth looked and smelled? I told them he was particular, again due to the autism, about his gummy melatonin at night, again they refused it. I get rules, I do but he struggled with these things why give him MORE to combat with everything going on that landed him there? So the women who called me with updates were kind, one in particular was phenomenal and personable and answered all my questions I believe she was a doctor. Meds were adjusted, he was given a stimulant and he was not able to stay on it. He was ridiculously angry, edgy, moody and hyper and only had 1-2 days on it before discharge. I believed the point was to get that under control, but apparently it was just to make sure he was no longer violent. Discharge was an absolute JOKE. My son was FILTHY, wearing someone else's clothes that were three sizes too big, his were all shoved in a bag not neatly folded and were clean so I want to know why he was in dirty, big clothes because he probably didn't adjust to that either. He also came home with a NASTY case of head lice and a torn bear that a kid in there tore. He told me he got kicked, shoved, smacked, his hair pulled and the bigger boys in there told him they wanted to kill him. He was covered in bruises, scrapes, scratches and dirty fingernails. I'd also like to add that the man that brought him out tossed his green folder on the chair next to me read me a sentence and asked me to sign. No further calls, updates or anything given. Nobody talked to me about how he did, how his time went, etc. Perhaps NOT the place he needed to be, being autistic, but I didn't expect that a place like this could be so bad. I regret sending him.
