State Run Rehab Facilities

Private Treatment Centers

How Do I Pay For Addiction Treatment?

Private Health Insurance

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was enacted in 2010 and aimed to make lower healthcare costs and high-quality treatment available to many more Americans. As a result of this law, most health insurance policies must cover drug and alcohol addiction treatment. Additionally, the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) requires that health insurance plans cover the treatment of mental health or substance use disorders to the same degree as other medical issues. There are some exceptions to this, but generally, your insurance company will fully or partially cover your treatment.

The first thing you need to do is to call your private insurance provider and find out more about your coverage. You will need to identify the addiction treatment centers that accept your insurance and determine whether they provide the specific treatment you need. If you cannot find a suitable in-network facility, you may have to pay for treatment yourself.

Like many types of insurance, the more you pay as a monthly premium, the less you pay when you make a claim. In some cases, your insurance may cover all of your treatment. In other cases, you may need to pay a set deductible amount, copay, and coinsurance towards your treatment costs.

Medicare and Medicaid

In the case of Medicaid, Federal Regulations state that a decision about non-disability-related eligibility must be made within 45 days of application.

Other Forms of Health Insurance

Other health insurance programs apply to some people with varying coverage and copay costs. Examples include:

Veterans health care: Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care is available and includes treatment for substance use disorders. Treatments related to military service are free, but others may require a copay. The amount you pay depends on your circumstances and military service length.
Workplace health insurance: Some employers offer health insurance to their employees with coverage for addiction treatment. COBRA is a federal law allowing workers to continue their workplace health insurance coverage even after voluntary or involuntary termination, retirement before Medicare, or as a former spouse after divorce.
Health savings account: This is a savings plan rather than health insurance as it allows people to save pre-tax money for healthcare costs. If you have money saved within your HSA, you can use it to pay your deductible, copay, or coinsurance.

I entered detox with the gift of desperation. It wasn’t amenities and luxuries that made the difference. It was a frontline staff that lives and breathes recovery and genuinely cares about the clients. All the BHTs, group facilitators, my therapist, case worker, & med staff pour their souls into this work. Their love and concern overrides any complaints I could muster. I’m the hardest of cases. The breath in my lungs is a legion of miracles. With all the negative publicity circulating in the media about the “Troubled Teen Industry” or “TTI”, I knew that sending my son to Stonewater could be the end of our relationship. However, I also knew that absent a residential recovery center, my son’s life would likely be very short. As a resident of Portland, Oregon, we live in a city where hard drugs were decriminalized in 2020. This, paired with social media algorithms that push drug dealers to children’s recommended followers, and missed social and educational opportunities from when the state of Oregon shut down public schools for nearly two years during COVID, left my son with deficiencies and vulnerabilities that quickly pulled him into the world of drugs and alcohol before I could understand what was happening to him. For three months, Stonewater cared for my son 24/7 and provided the medical, mental, spiritual, physical and social support he needed (and that we could not possibly sufficiently provide) during this devastating and challenging time. He became sober, he was put on the correct medications for his mental health needs, attended recovery program meetings off campus, had extensive individual therapy and family therapy (via zoom) and connected with peers who were willing to hold him accountable. As he worked his recovery, the staff at Stonewater maintained constant contact with our family. We spoke with his therapist weekly, we got weekly updates from the nurse practitioner who administers medications, we received calls from the psychiatrist when necessary, and we had weekly calls with the on-site educator. Additionally, we had bi-weekly calls with a family support coordinator who helped us plan for his return home. My son is on a trajectory of continued recovery and finding his purpose in life. His relationships with family members are improved. He is grateful for his time at Stonewater, and for the recovery that began there. Admittedly, it was not easy but do not be fooled by the negative publicity you’ll fine online regarding this industry. Holding kids accountable is not the same as shaming them. Doing chores is not slave labor. Having expectations is not the same as oppression. These are all life skills that must be learned in order to become a well-adjusted contributing member of society. If your son is headed down a path of destruction with drugs and/or alcohol, I would highly recommend sending him to Stonewater. It was worth every cent and I do not for a moment regret this decision. When we were searching for residential care, it was like being lost in a storm. Terrifying doesn’t even begin to cover it. But right from that very first call to Stonewater, it was like a gentle hand reaching out. There was this immediate warmth, this understanding that wrapped around me—and hearing them talk about incorporating faith? That was like a sigh of relief and comfort. It just felt right. We had to wait a few weeks for a bed, which felt like forever, but even then, they were so kind, offering other options while letting us know they were there for us. And deep down, I just knew Stonewater was where we needed to be. When I dropped off my 17-year-old in September 2024, he was… well, hurting. We were all hurting. It was a chaotic, scary time, and we were all so afraid. But somehow, I trusted them. There was nothing more we could do on our own. I had faith in the process and in the professionals. It felt like finally surrendering, saying, “Okay, we’re lost, but I hope you know the way.” Stonewater was our last hope, and they became our lifeline. And the communication? Oh my goodness, it felt like constant, gentle reassurance. I probably emailed his therapist, Bec, daily, and she always replied with grace and empathy. I was a nervous wreck, holding onto my seat, waiting for the next disaster- but I knew he was safe. And those family weekends? They were just… pure love. You could see how much everyone cared, how invested the founders were, and how much the boys were changing. It filled me with an overwhelming sense of gratitude, mixed with a hint of that “what now?” feeling, filled with fear for the future and the unknown, but I knew they were building a solid foundation. It’s beautiful that many of the staff have walked similar paths. This creates an incredible connection with the boys, and you can see the beauty of recovery all around. The bonds we formed—with the staff and other families—are just… precious. Stonewater wasn’t only working on my boy; they were also supporting me. It was truly God’s grace that led us there. We wouldn’t be where we are today without them, and I’d recommend them a thousand times over. Even their aftercare recommendations were spot-on. They just get it- they know what they are doing. Now, months later, I am still watching my boy bloom into the incredible young man I always knew he could be, and Stonewater has played a pivotal role in this. I’m so incredibly grateful to Stonewater and especially to Bec Inman, whom I absolutely adore. I talked to Laura multiple times before I went and I was really nervous. She made me feel better about going and is super cool. Without her they may not have as many patients. A driver picked me up and took me back to the airport so they make everything pretty easy. I was on oxys then suboxone for 15 years after a car accident and was tired of how it made me angry at times and ruled my life and schedule. It helped contribute to ruining my relationship with my daughters mom and I just wanted off of it now. She was not very supportive either. It is a fast process for the worst of the withdrawals but you will need to follow their program when you get home. Frieda is great and adjusted my meds on the days I called. I’ve been home a month and I still have low energy and lethargy but I’m working through that with exercise. Laura keeps in contact with me and she truly cares about people. Pat is awesome and we had some great chats. I recommend going here if you are struggling. It wont be easy but if i can do it, you can too. Now I can enjoy my time with my kids and granddaughter. Jason Johnson 2 months ago First, I want to say that this review isn’t based on my personal experience, but a friends who isn’t comfortable sharing their name on this platform. After months of research, he took a leap of faith and chose this center over a similar center in Florida that was double the price. Because he doesn’t have insurance, he had to come out of pocket so this obviously was the more practical option price wise, but also care wise. If you’re paying 5k+ for treatment out of pocket at a facility, you’re doing so because you want to know you’re in good hands and have a staff of people who will be with you through the process. Releasing someone after 24 hours to a hotel room with active monitoring just doesn’t seem right when you’re paying 20k+ for a treatment (the other facility doesn’t accept insurance either). Of course, rehabs want to make money- a business is a business. But that doesn’t mean everyone shouldn’t be treated with respect and quality care. The staff here, on the other hand, supported him the entire time and made sure he got the care he needed. He is 6 months sober now! The treatment isn’t by any means “easy” but Rome wasn’t built in a day. No treatment is going to be easy to break the shackles of addiction, you have to want your sobriety and to be free. If you don’t want it, no treatment will save you from going back and using. But if you want it, then this place is a no brainer. You will feel some exhaustion, maybe even a lack of motivation but the important thing is to get up and move around. All of that will balance itself out. Take vitamins before and after your procedure, and thank God for another day! I’ve been to several detox/drug treatment centers but none are like this. Groups are informative. They give you a foundation needed for success. They explain the steps and guide you through as many as you can in a 30 day period. You can feel supported, safe, and gain a sense of fellowship. I enjoyed the holistic therapy, meditation therapy and the hikes. Food was good, snacks whenever you want 24/7 nurses, you can smoke cigarettes/vape. Staff cares about your recovery. It was life changing for me. The Survivors week helped me with my childhood traumas and learn how to heal my inner child. I met with my trauma therapist several times after this. Also met with evening and weekend therapists. Family week was intense but worth it. My husband joined me that week. They have a brain center where I got to use a CES device to help my anxiety and panic attacks. Also the Chi Machine. I was able to do the safe and sound protocol daily therapy (SSP) for a week. This is suppose to help get you out of the fight or flight mode. I went to acupuncture therapy and found it helpful for my fibromyalgia pain. There were daily evening mediation therapy and 12 step meetings. I got to learn about codependency and CoDA meetings. I also attended ACA meetings. I learned effective coping skills while there.
