About The Renfrew Center First in Eating Disorders

The Renfrew Center First in Eating Disorders Center offers residential and outpatient treatment programs that address specialty needs associated with eating disorders, including substance use. Eating disorders and substance abuse may occur together, which is called dual diagnosis.

Both symptoms serve the same function of managing distress by avoiding or changing difficult emotions. They recognized the importance of addressing both issues simultaneously to achieve the best rate of success.

Their specialized substance use programming is designed to use an evidence based, transdiagnostic approach that addresses the core underlying issues of both conditions. You have access to individual and group therapies that are designed to help motivate you and educate you about the complex connections in your disorders. You also develop the skills necessary to achieve recovery. The customized approach is based on a comprehensive assessment of your addiction, the substances you use, and the severity of the substance abuse.

The program is not centered around a 12-step model but they recognize that working the steps can help some individuals and therefore support participation in AA-based groups depending on your preference. They accept more than 400 insurance providers from throughout the country and verify your insurance coverage before you get started in treatment.

WORST TREATMENT CENTER EVER!!!!!!! I have been to ED treatment prior and this one was a traumatizing experience. I have severe PTSD from my experience there in March 2022 at 20 years old. I was there for five days and during that time I was isolated, woken up at 5am daily for mandatory bloodwork and weigh-ins, shown little compassion, was overdosed on Miralax (given 3x the normal dose), and had difficult time contacting therapists and family/friends. I was told to "suck it up" and was explicitly told by a staff member "my issues were so much less severe and trivial compared to Ukraine at the moment". I was forced to drink protein shakes three times a day everyday and was forced to eat in a private room with staff staring at me (where the Ukraine comment was made). There was NOTHING individualized about this program and after all of this unfamiliar food and medicine I threw up and was accused of bulimia with zero prior history. Not to mention the food was almost inedible most days and cold or room temperature. I was not allowed to use the restroom at night and was constantly awoken and not able to get any sleep. After years of struggles with ADHD, my medication that treated it was removed and wasn't returned to me after leaving the program, despite being expensive and 100% necessary. I was told I was using my medicine to restrict my eating when the truth was teachers have been telling me my inability to focus has interrupted my learning since 3rd grade. Also adults were in the same groups with teenagers which created weird dynamics and teenagers behavioral issues with impede on group therapy. When I knew this program was not for me, I was put on a "72 hour hold" for a voluntary program. I was barely able to contact home and was pressured a ton to stay by staff. Some of the nursing staff was compassionate but for the most part the group leaders and therapists more felt like babysitters and like they were following a booklet. Other residents discussed going to the same group therapies over and over again which I don't see how that creates progress. I was extremely emotional and vulnerable and was met with little kindness and compassionate from staff. My experience was so traumatic it has taken me this long to leave a review. Please avoid this place at all costs.

You don't have bars on the windows but you do have locking clips on the windows that.dont allow egress. I know the management at Renfrew accepts mis-truths but they should be careful about their public statements!
Response from the owner4 days ago
Thank you for sharing your concerns. While we do not have bars on our windows, like many residential and clinical settings, we have safety locks in place to ensure a secure environment for our patients. These are standard precautions to promote safety while maintaining a comfortable and therapeutic setting.

I ve been to probably five different eating disorder rehab centers. This place is by far the worst. I was appalled at the group therapy methods. I don t know how that would help anybody. Literal amateurs and my personal therapist wasn t even fully licensed yet. Yet they wanted 40 grand. I left after two nights. Being locked in your room or a group room isn t great either. If you re gonna spend that amount of money and put your hope into recovery, please do your research and choose a different center.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Renfrew saved my life. I was fading away. All my years of trauma had culminated into something incredibly destructive and potentially deadly. Malnourished since birth, I did not think anything of how I was and nor did my family. It had always been my “normal”. During my stay, I learned why I made the choices I made back then and how to let go of blame. At Renfrew I learned to communicate and be myself. I learned proper nutrition and gained awareness of emotions. I collected many coping skills. I learned how much I actually matter and that I do make an impact in people’s lives. At Renfrew I gained community. I gained friends, family. The place is honestly great. Like I didn’t want to leave in the end. It’s not perfect of course. Nothing is. But definitely the best program out there. It’s a lot of hard work and I truly believe anyone of you can do the hard work. Shout out to my team, the cooks, the director of utilization(Angel lady), housekeeping staff, nursing staff, the counselors, and the security staff. I love and miss them all. I couldn’t have done it without them. I highly recommend them. Oh! +Advocate!! If you plan to go, advocate for your needs always :). Recovery is worth it!!!!

I was in Renfrew 2002 for 2 months. It was a jail! Bars on the bedroom windows. Forced to eat so Renfrew could collect your insurance $ . I made a lot of friends but 22 years later I'm still bulimiarexic. Meaning if I eat I'll throw it up or I don't eat at all. 61yrs old, 67lbs. Renfrew did not help me. Renfrew SUCKS. Don't waste your time. Do research and find a rehab clinic that cares.

It's been a year out and I am a completely different person ! I have not restricted, binged or dieted in 1 year and have no urge to. If only I would of gone years ago I would have had such a different life. More than that its the peace in my heart and mind as I can be present in the moment and not just try to get through everything. It was hard, then scary to leave after being with so much support, new people you cared about. But the support continued. I always thought after trying everything out there this would not work as well but it did because I used the tools I was taught. I did go through hell but that's how my whole life was I just was not as aware how I was not coping with life on life's terms. You can complain about stuff there but that to is to get the focus off of yourself, you will have everything you need.

I just recently left the Renfrew center and I wanted to write about my experience. I have ARFID making it hard for me to eat without the fear of throwing up and a lot of anxiety enforces that. It was my first time in treatment and I was so down and hopeless. The staff here were so patient and supportive throughout my journey and were always there to comfort me through my hard times. Shoutout to Laura, my therapist for being my biggest supporter. You really understood me in ways I never thought possible. As for the community, I began to feel really involved and even made some really close friends that I stay in contact with. Although Renfrew might not be perfect, they still do their best to make sure that the community has a say and address the problems that concern us. I’ll miss the staff and my friends there but I’m so glad to have them apart of my recovery! 🤍

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:

The whole treatment was a joke. I was fortunate enough to have experienced other legitimate treatment centers 12 years before to be able to compare! This one was real loosie-goosie. I had one incident that nearly killed me! Shortly before lunch my blood sugar tested at 55! I knew I’d be eating in a few minutes and that’s the day the lunch monitor decides to test our strength to resist and so she had us sit for 1/2 hour staring at our food in front of us! I felt my life slipping in front of me! So spoke up to tell her about my level which must have been below 30 by then and she told me to shut up and shamed me in front of all the others. I must have blanked out because I came to but did not remember how I did! All I know is I did not complain to the staff as I needed to stay in the program and I knew I would be unjustly kicked out… I was so intimidated otherwise I would have been way more assertive! This was about 20 years ago 😥😥😥

Renfrew saved my life. I cannot put it any more plainly than that. Not everyone is ready for treatment and it is not easy. But if it were easy, would we need residential help in first place? I found the permanent staff to be remarkable. It is true that nearing your discharge date can be scary. But that is what the staff is there to do - to help you navigate "real life". If you want to see the negative, that's all you will see. If you want to heal, then it may take time but YOU CAN HEAL! I highly recommend stepdown tratment as it was key for my personal success. It has been just over a year since I discharged from stepdown after a couple months of in-patient. I am proud to say I have maintained my weight but know I still have healing ahead of me. That's okay. I am alive. I am healthy. And honestly... I CAN THINK! You have no idea how much brain fog you have until it is gone! The night before I checked in, I read reviews like crazy - questioning my decision. That was fear looking for a reason to bail. If you are ready to choose LIFE - YOUR LIFE - I cannot recommend Renfrew enough. Go in with eyes wide open, be prepared to be uncomfortable, even miserable sometimes. But you HAVE to work through the junk to find peace and love of self on the other side. I made life-long friends at Renfrew. The community fluctuates, but your tribe is there. You don't know it yet, but they absolutely get you. Concern yourself with your own journey and let others have theirs. Do not compare, and do not pay attention to that freaking movie reference every time someone wants to complain about treatment. Trust and believe that "documentary" was absoutely a biased prospective. Treatment is what YOU make of it. YOU CAN DO THIS! SAY YES!

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:

i felt very cared for during my stay here. i had been to other facilities and was afraid that it would be similar, but it wasn’t. Coconut Creek was the best decision i made for myself. it is by no means a perfect machine—but i could feel how much all of the staff loved their jobs. thank you so much.

Seems sketchy. My loved one isn’t getting half the mail we are sending her and not much phone call time. Ridiculous restrictions.

Hi, this should not be the case, please connect with your loved one’s primary therapist as they can support you.
