I'm drinking beer and vodka since age 16. I'm 69 now. Stopped drinking alcohol in February 2019 !!!! At least 20 shots Vodka NIGHTLY !!!!!! Stopped drinking no problem and NO help from anyone. What I'm saying is that if you really want to stop , JUST DO IT !!!!! No legal trouble, no DWI , NOTHING. Just decided to stop that nonsense. AA people sit around for three hours each meeting and TALK ABOUT DRINKING !!!!! THAT'S NOT GOOD !!!!! DON'T TALK ABOUT IT . First time I went to a "meeting " I stopped at 7-11 for some beer after the meeting. Those people are literally a very sick cult. They can't have a drink , so they make it sound like no one else can have a drink either !!!!!!

Wow — twenty shots a night! Na zdorovie — to your health! 🍻 And sincerely, congratulations on stopping and staying stopped on your own — that’s something to be proud of.

Just to clarify, AA has no opinion on anyone else’s drinking — we’re too busy keeping an eye on our own! 😉 AA is simply a fellowship for people who want help to stop drinking, stay stopped, and live a happier life — with a little laughter along the way.

If you need literature for your home group I highly recommend going to the SIA office instead of just ordering it online. The gentleman who helped me was so nice and helpful.

It's extremely disappointing that AA has changed It's preamble from men and women to people. You have to wonder why after all these years AA is catering to one side.

Thank you for sharing your opinion.

We’d like to clarify that Suffolk Intergroup had no role in this change and, in keeping with AA's traditions, does not express opinions on such matters. Our purpose is to support AA groups in the county and help connect people seeking recovery with the resources they need.

If you’d like to share your concerns about the change, we recommend discussing them with the General Service Representative (GSR) of your home group. If your group doesn’t currently have a GSR, you might consider stepping into that role to ensure your group’s voice is heard. If you’re not connected with a home group, finding one would be an excellent first step to getting involved in these conversations.

We appreciate your understanding and hope this helps guide you toward the appropriate channels.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.
