About Bright Path Counseling Center – Outpatient

Bright Path Counseling Center is an outpatient behavioral health facility located in North Syracuse, New York. They treat mental health conditions in adults, including co occurring mental health and addiction disorders. They provide DWI evaluations to people who have legal issues because of substance use. They also do other court ordered drug related evaluations.

They will give you an assessment in which they will ask about your psychological history and drug use. The staff is trained in many therapeutic methods, and your assessment will determine which is right for you.

They may use unconventional methods like hypnotherapy which takes you between your conscious and the subconscious to get at the root of problems. They will play music and you will enter a state of deep relaxation, The trance the therapist will put you in is similar to daydreaming.

Some people are best treated with methods of therapy that focus on the unique perspective of the individual. For example, you may be treated with Gestalt therapy. This method focuses on the client’s feelings in the present moment. You will be encouraged to engage in experiences beyond simply talking such as reenactment, art, and role playing to address your emotions.

Like most facilities, they also use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which teaches people to think differently to change hurtful behaviors. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is often used to treat dual diagnosis clients. It helps people manage emotions by teaching them skills like mindfulness and distress tolerance along with emotional regulation.

Your therapist will interview you to get to know you. You will discuss the emotions you want to change. You will trace that emotion back to the first time you ever experienced it. They will help you find a new way to process your memories and your beliefs about yourself.

Bright Path Counseling Center – Outpatient works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Hypnotherapy (aka guided hypnosis) can be used as a therapeutic modality to treat substance use, especially in terms of quitting smoking cigarettes (nicotine). Clinical hypnotherapists help clients turn their attention inward, accessing unconscious or subconscious material, and then make suggestions that are healthier for the individual. The process can help clients make deep, positive, and lasting changes, including ceasing addictive habits.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

The receptionist is friendly, greets me by name. They sent emails in plenty of time for me to continue to schedule my upcoming appointments. My therapist is very effective. I have been in therapy at least 3 times before to make it through a difficult situation. This is the first time I have had EMDR and I can't say enough about how much it has helped me! Highly recommend!

Very nice and welcoming atmosphere, the waiting area is very cozy, and our wonderful therapists really makes their space their own while having objects to fidget with to suit every individual. The women at the front desk are very pleasant and got us in very quickly and scheduled out our appointments as well. They also remember who you are when you walk in.

I'd like to start with acknowledging the practice' manager, Suzie. I had been to the practice before previously under different management and with her in the seat, it's a very well run ship! She is dedicated to the clients and trying to help everybody get the help they need with the limited availabilities that are currently happening in the psychiatry world. Her professionalism reminds me that she's there to help me get the help that I need. Recently there's also been an addition of Tina and she has been quite amazing at listening to the clients, understanding their needs and trying to make extra appointments happen if needed. Thank you to the amazing staff! I've also been to numerous therapists within the practice at different times in my life for different reasons. Currently dealing with disabling brain injury and the effects that it causes on the emotional system and brain, My current therapist Irene, has helped me tremendously in my journey to a life I never thought I had to live. Thank you to everybody at Bright paths for literally creating a bright light on my dark path!

Went to bright path counseling, saw Nicole. She taught me some great strategies that have helped me cope with my severe cognitive communication deficits brought on by a TBI from car accident 7 years ago. If you know about TBIs, and are treating clients with TBIs it would be a good idea to read client reports and evaluations. It is also a good idea to provided the accommodations for disabled people. The one accommodation I asked for, was to send me a reminder the day before i have an appt. Never happened. I missed my appt the day after Christmas, assuming I didn’t have an appt because my appt earlier in the week was cancelled. My son, visiting me after a terrible separation from his father and me after a 28 year marriage. I turn my phone off when I’m with people because it distracts me too much. Total chaos in my head ALL THE TIME. Nicole knows my history. She knows my husband gambled away our entire life savings and I am living on food stamps in subsidized housing. But it was necessary to charge me for a missed appt. No reminder message. The receptionist I spoke to was condescending and rude to me, demonstrated a total lack of compassion. I tried explaining my situation to her. I understand this policy, and if I had the accommodations I asked for, that I need to help me function in society, this would never have happened. I have 5 doctors I see weekly. Every one of them provides this accommodation. I am unable to live independently and rely on the kindness and compassion of others. What really , really upset me is that Nicole never called me about it. Not that day, or the next, or the next or the next. This is unacceptable treatment, and it’s cruel. DO YOU PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND THAT WE BEAR OUR SOUL TO OUR THERAPIST. WE NEED TO FEEL SAFE, LISTENED TO, WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO TRUST YOU, WE NEED TO BE SEEN AS HUMAN BEINGS. WE NEED TO BE TREATED WITH RESPECT AND COMPASSION JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. I require accommodations because I am disabled. My neuropsych and sp and lang evaluations were never read, or were read and ignored. So, this is why you get a 2 on your survey. Do better. J. Belsky

Had the worst experience today here we got miss treated an i do not recommend this counseling to anyone they only care about money they take advantage of your mental health an us it against you to get more money they have now told us we can't come back there we did love are counselor an my daughter's they were great but the reception manager is a big bully to anyone who has mental health issues an if your looking for a mental health an marriage counseling please find something then other then brighter paths the facility is is greedy, money hungry an bully's an the CEO is just as bad as as the receptionist she called us an was abusive

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Bright Path Counseling Center reserves the right to refuse services to clients and/or their family members who are verbally abusive, hostile and/or threatening to our staff. We see hundreds of clients every week. We can not allow this misbehavior to our staff and/or counselors and disruption to our other clients. We wish you the best of luck seeking counseling elsewhere and implore you to treat them with more respect.

I have mixed emotions about this place while Matthew Kelly is a great counselor there was a miscommunication with appointments at the front end The Administration manager Susie was rude and did not offer guidance on correcting the problem to the point of calling me back and continuing to threaten me with removing my son from the practice by calling the CEO. Again its sad that such an unprofessional person is leading a wonderful crew of counselors To respond to the comment below who I am sure is Susie the administration manager. I said thanks for not helping with a tone of voice and hung up on you to end the call you then called me back because you didn't appreciate the call and threatened me to call the CEO of the company. When I asked to speak to the CEO you then back peddled and told me that I cannot because they are retired. Then I said I would not like to speak to you anymore because your disrespectful and did not understand what I was asking. You then called a counselor who was on vacation no less to call me and tell me that if I dont take down my google review that my son can no longer go to brightpath after I already cancelled my appointments and payments. Again you get what you give with attitude. I will not negotiate with my sons mental health like you had your staff ask me to do. The company would be better off with a new administration leader who knows how to speak to the public and keep her story straight. So in short I cancelled the appointments before not allowing us to attend because of administrative feelings. And I repeat it's really disappointing I was on brightpaths side trying to help out you were told that by a counselor.
