About Choices Counseling Services

Choices Counseling Services is an outpatient counseling clinic in Valparaiso, Indiana. They provide services for children, teens, and adults who are struggling with a range of behavioral health issues, including substance use disorders. They take self payment and are in network with most private insurance plans. You’re welcome to attend your counseling sessions in person or online via their telemental health program.

You can go here to attend individual, couples, group, and family counseling sessions. They focus on helping you strengthen your internal relationships so you can use those bonds to break the chains of addiction. To help determine which therapy options are right for you, they’ll begin with a personal assessment.

Something I like about this facility is that their assessments don’t simply cover your physical symptoms. Instead, they look at things like which motivational stage you’re currently in and what factors into your drug or alcohol use. Then, they compile all of those findings into an official report and long term treatment plan. Depending on the level of care you require, you may attend general or intensive outpatient services. Their programs incorporate several evidence based models, including motivational interviewing and trauma therapy.

One former client says their therapist was very results oriented and helped them gain a happy, healthy outlook for the future. Another says their therapist helped them work through their issues and get their life back on track.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

A good of mine decided to enter into counseling here. Her counselor was very understanding at every turn and helper to overcome a variety of issues she had been struggling with for a good while.

Started here in 2017 as part of a DCS case. I had couples and individual therapy. Teresa was the couple's therapist--she seemed to favor my husband, whom I had told Teresa had physically abused me and our children ("you need to move past it" even though he was continuing to be verbally abusive to me while we were in couples thearpy)--never really wanted to discuss my husband's abuse towards me ("well, he seems like he is sorry to me"--which is great if she was married to him, but I was and it didn't appear to me was sorry). Individual I had 3 different therapist--the first two left Choices! or became addiction counselors for them. This was very disruptive to began with someone then have to start over and then start over again. Third therapist, Ali, was great in certain ways but also unprofessional and overstepped client-therapist boundaries. She gave me her personal phone number. Would come to my house if I asked her to when I was upset. Gave me furniture of hers when I moved. Paid for medication when i couldn't afford it. It become more of a friendship than client-patient and this affected the quality of therapy I was receiving towards the end. Therapist would get personally offended when I was upset and expressed my anger at, for example, her being 25 minutes late to a 50 minute appointment. I told her I was so upset at this and her lack of professional courtesy of not notifying me the appointment would be so late (she told me "I do not owe you any professional courtesy")--that was it for me. She told me if I could not continue she was considering it as me canceling the appointment (which I said no I just need a moment to calm down) and she left the session. I was still charged the $40 and Choices! refused to refund my money for a therapy session I never had. Also Choices! has zero sympathy for the fact clients may not be working right now and cannot pay their bill until unemployment kicks in (which takes almost a month) but they still need the therapy. Overall therapists are hit or miss, your time as a patient is not valued, and money seems to be of utmost importance to them over the mental health of their clients. I would NOT recommend Choice! Valparaiso has many other choices for therapy.

The office is unprofessional being run by the owners husband, huge conflict of interest in anything administrative, scheduling, records Read the clients rights carefully as you can and may be mistreated. The counseling ethics "do no harm" its actually the exact opposite there. The counselor we saw was licensed in substance use yet dismissed both domestic and substance abuse concerns brought up for joint counseling. Their practice is dated and biased, perpetuating issues to increase, there, rather then be resolved. They are not effective at neutral mediation of problems between parents involving children's safety and rights. Please note, a 5 star review was from employee post after trying to address matters with choices directly and mentioning others had similar negative experience there. They dismiss anyone who speaks up on them crossing boundaries. I am not a reviewer unless its an exceptionally terrible experience and just hope that future clients go in with eyes open or not at all
