About Huntsville Hospital

Located in Huntsville, Alabama, Huntsville Hospital is an 881 bed hospital that has a transitional care program for individuals who struggle with opioid use disorder. The program was started in response to the high risk of poor outcomes for hospitalized patients with OUD.

Connection to Community Resources

The Transitional Care Team is staffed with patient navigators who will provide individuals with case management services and motivational support. Clients will be connected to resources within the community to help support their overall recovery.

Clients may receive assistance getting access to education, vocational training, and housing. Patient navigators will follow up with patients after they’ve discharged and help them connect with the appropriate recovery services to overcome addiction. The Transitional Care team strives to increase the number of individuals who seek outpatient treatment after they’ve completed a hospital stay.

Educating Pregnant Mothers on Opioid Use Disorder

The OUD Moms Outreach initiative at Huntsville Hospital provides education to pregnant mothers about opioid use disorder. The clients will learn about methods that will help them manage children who are born with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome so that better outcomes may occur for the family.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

My step dad was treated by Dr. Thomas Thompson for a total knee. He is up walking already. Minimal pain. Its only been a momth since his surgery. Wow!. He said his experience was excellent with the doctor and the hospital. Therapy is great! Thank you!

I feel emotional pain was not properly addressed. Their safe position is not spending a little extra money in recruiting more staff and that makes their level of care incompetent.

Called me back a little early, which was great! Dr. Sandwell came in and talked to me about my surgery. The anesthesiologist came in and talked to me also about my surgery. Which I really appreciated. The nurse came in and asked me a lot of questions. She was very nice and courteous. But the IV stick was very painful. Overall everyone went so well. I was very impressed. Would recommend Dr. Sandwell and Huntsville Hospital to friends and family.

Whole team was outstanding from all the doctors and nurses. If I have a medical situation again in Huntsville, I would definitely tell the ambulance to go straight to this hospital. Thank you so much for taking care of me.

Most of the nurses are helpful and friendly but that’s where the good ends. I checked into the emergency room at about 11:00am. When asked about pain I described as some of the worst pain I have ever had. It was after 5:00pm before they gave me anything for the pain and that was not until my wife stated video taping and threatening lawsuit. After that I was mostly ignored until the pain once again was intense around 1100 pm. I could not get anyone to even respond until I used my cell phone to call in through the front desk. After about another hour of intense pain I was given something for it. In the future I will be looking at other options as I have no faith in the care from HH

HH is an amazing facility. The ER is wonderful. They took great care of my sister and she was admitted to the hospital. The nurses and entire staff are caring and considerate to the patient and family members.

My son was taken to the er by an ambulance for an accidental gunshot to his hand. Our entire experience was not negligent and disturbingly cold. He is epileptic, Autistic and came in with a profusely bleeding hand. They did not stop the bleeding or clean it. They didn’t give him a requested tetanus shot or check his ear that he said was hurting. They said that a gunshot is not a case for the ER and to follow up with ortho. They also sent us home with another patient’s discharge paperwork. I called to report the paperwork and asked for someone to follow up with me concerning the breech of privacy, no one has called me. We ended up seeing his doctor because we were concerned about the wounds. HH er said he was fine there might be a minor crack in his knuckle. His doctor sent us back to the er, we went to Crestwood. They treated us like actual humans, treated his infected wounds and did scans that revealed shattered bones and a lot of debris from the bullet. They got us into Sportsmed the next morning and he is having surgery this week. He also has a ruptured ear drum with hearing loss. All of this could have been treated at HH er, but they treated us like we were a waste of time. We will never go back to HH and will warn people to stay away.

My husband was recently in Huntsville Hospital. For the most part things went very well. The food is awful…actually the worse of all hospitals he ended up in for various reasons. You get no choice of food. He doesn’t eat eggs and that is what he got for breakfast one morning. One thing the people that delivered the food did not do was to move the bed table to so he could access his food. This table did some considerable amount of force to move (which it should’ve been easy to just roll it so he could access his tray. Housekeeping comes in to empty trash cans, but no to sweep up the room (I didn’t realize I dropped a tortilla chip and stepped on it😬). He was asked if he wanted to take a shower, but the patient tech never came back to help him.😞 No one brought any Kleenex after asking for it. The ward clerk (if that the correct position name) was so friendly, had a bright pink shirt under her scrubs, with a pink headpiece on and fun glasses. That did brighten our day. She worked on the eighth floor. The next day she had a different pair of fun glasses on!!! The nurses and techs were all wonderful and answered the call light promptly.

All of the doctors and nurses were fantastic (5-stars), but this is a review of the hospital. That in mind, the hospital's policy of leaving pain-management to an outside entity that only works Monday through Friday is unfortunate. I laid in the bed all weekend after receiving a lumbar puncture that didnt properly seal, unable to perform the tasks assigned to me by the hosptal's therapists (also great) because of pain that should have been manageable. Since it was the weekend, the outside entity was unavailable, and the hospital has taken no measures to cover this gap in care over the weekend.

By far the worst medical experience I've had in my life!! I was in a car accident with several injuries. It started with the nurse trying to get the IV started. I told her that it's only one place they're ever able to find my vein. She proceeded to try 2 other places with both failed attempts. Definitely needs another training, because when she stuck the needle in and missed the vein, she proceeded to slide the needle in and out that same site trying to find a vein. Another nurse came in, Amanda, she was absolutely amazing throughout the entire visit. She listened to my concerns, got the ultrasound machine and was able to get the IV started exactly where I told the first nurse. Another nurse, don't remember her name, but she was pregnant. I asked for help using the restroom as my arm was injured and my leg was burned. She made me get up out the bed, walk across the ER to go to the bathroom, then said, "You're in room ___ when you're done." She didn't stay to see if I was ok, needed help or anything. Upon being discharged, the doctor came in and said, "Good news! You have no broken bones, so you're free to go home." I said, "I still can't move my arm." He said, "You can follow up with TOC in 5-7 days." After all being in pain, I went to Crestwood only to find out that Huntsville Hospital didn't do a CT Scan on forearm (the main complaint). They did the scan which came back showing I had multiple torn ligaments, soft tissue damage, and bruising and swelling up to my elbow. Huntsville Hospital was careless and neglect!

I had a very pleasant experience at a time when I didn't feel so great. The facilities, the nurses, the PAs, the scan and MRI teams, and the varied doctors were excellent and I felt I was in good hands with serious/knowledgeable people who truly cared for my well being. I feel fortunate to live in Huntsville!
