About HCA Florida Kendall Hospital

HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, located in Miami, Florida, is a large care and teaching facility that has been serving the people of Miami-Dade County for over 45 years. Within their hospital, they offer extensive behavioral health services including addiction treatment and mental health care.

They primarily provide outpatient care here but also offer medical detoxification programs to help manage withdrawal symptoms safely while minimizing side effects. Additionally, they have aftercare services, connecting you with Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, housing support, and outpatient psychiatry so you can continue your recovery. They also provide family support to ensure that you and your loved ones are aligned on your recovery goals.

Attentive Mental Health Care Along with Addiction Treatment

When it comes to mental health care, they offer both inpatient and outpatient programs for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. This flexibility allows you to choose a level of care that best fits your schedule and needs. Their programs address conditions such as anxiety, mood disorders, and other behavioral health issues.

Since the hospital is located in Miami, you’ll find plenty of activities and attractions nearby. Dolphin Mall, for example, offers a variety of entertainment options, including a bowling alley, movie theater, Dave and Buster’s, and numerous fine dining restaurants.

Their approach to treatment here leans toward the holistic side, which is something I always appreciate. For mental health care, they also offer electroconvulsive therapy, an alternative treatment that many find to be highly effective.

Very dissatisfied with the professionalism that this type of Hospital should have, my mother an 81 year old patient existing pathologies such as type 1 diabetes with blood pressure problems and more than a doctor recommends surgery to correct a type 4 Aneurysm knowing all the risks that a person with those medical diagnoses runs, and that her family doctor did not recommend said surgical intervention and I opposed the procedure that the surgeon was recommending, when I did not convince him he used all his psychology saying that I ran the risk of taking her home and she would die in less than a minute using my human side, in short of the story my mother today in intensive care with two cardiac arrests with no hope of survival due to a poor professional attitude and a bad recommendation, a surgery without explaining to me the complications of such a procedure that in the end did not convince me and I did not sign, Without adding that after the surgery he justified and used misleading words as in the first conversation we had that they had mishaps but they had corrected it and when my mother arrived at the Hospital, she was in a critical condition, just as I had left her the day before, in the best condition despite her ailments. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOSPITAL. THEY DO NOT SPEAK CLEARLY WITH THE PATIENTS OR THEIR FAMILY. IN THE END, IT'S ALL ABOUT GETTING EVERYTHING THEY CAN OUT OF THE INSURANCE, AND THE HUMAN SIDE LEAVES A LOT TO THINK ABOUT.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient rehabs encompass multiple levels of care to facilitate clients' progress through their recovery journey. Clients who are stepping down from inpatient treatment may require intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment, which involves more frequent and substantive therapeutic interventions than does standard outpatient care. Outpatient centers typically provide extensive addiction counseling, including individual, group, and family therapy. Medication assisted treatment programs (MAT) and recovery-focused life skills training are also common in outpatient care.

inpatient iconInpatient

Clients typically choose inpatient rehab when they are in early recovery or are experiencing a crisis that puts them at an increased risk of relapse. They reside at the treatment center for the length of their program, which may range from two weeks to more than 18 months, depending on the program design. Intensive psychotherapy is often the primary treatment modality, but clients in inpatient care may also receive holistic treatment and recovery-focused life skills training.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

The first step of the recovery process involves the removal of all drugs and alcohol from your system while under 24/7 medical supervision. Known as a medically assisted detox, you are closely monitored by medical staff who can provide medications, if necessary, to help alleviate any potential withdrawal symptoms. Medical detox is usually followed by a period of inpatient addiction treatment.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image

Military Program

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Substance abuse creates biochemical imbalances in your body and brain. By implementing dietary changes, you can restore that balance. This is the goal of nutrition therapy in Florida. You'll gain an understanding of what nutrients your body needs and learn best self care practices.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Very dirty. My room bathroom not cleaned in 3 days & I had bad diarrhea so I had to clean it myself. Soap dispenser empty until 3rd day. Doctors said I would have come a procedure scheduled then no evidence on nurses computer. When I did get scheduled it was at least 4 hours after promised time. Only way I got my procedures were to complain. The management to staff communication appeared disorganized. Staff was stretched thin and overwhelmed. Don't go there if unless you have no other option.

I was admitted for a robotic hysterectomy. Everything went well. The staff was kind and professional and the facility was great. Thank you. More English speaking professionals also should be hired. But was otherwise so great.

I can't speak for the entire hospital, however the outpatient center at this hospital was a big plus +. I went for a procedure a few days ago and from the minute I got there the service was outstanding. Lourdes at the check-in was most gracious not only to me but to everyone. I don't remember the names of the nurses and all those involved in my care. I did see a lot of team work which I highly appreciate. Thank you for all you did. I'm sure they provide the same excellent care to all patients. Kudos 👍👍👍

My name ze wa. Gen I didn't want to reply to your email, but I thought about it for a few days. The unpleasant things I encountered in your hospital made me feel really bad for the first time in my life. On the morning of May 6, I was transferred from another emergency room to your hospital to wait for facial surgery, but I had a very bad experience. You made me not eat for 20 hours. I was very hungry, and I had been struggling with my stomach for 7 hours, struggling every second. And it gave me a very bad experience. I had to leave the hospital, I hadn't been allowed to eat for 22 hours and I felt so bad I had to leave to fend for myself. Your hospital gave me one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.

This truly has to be the worst hospital I’ve ever encountered. Staff has no idea how to employ any type of corrective measures or use of insight to solve problems and very slow to react to nearly anything. It is not a place to put your trust in for your health.
