About Mental Health Systems

Mental Health Systems in Edina, Minnesota, offers a focused and structured approach to outpatient mental health care with services built around evidence-based treatments. It’s not too far from Lake Cornelia.

They specialize in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) especially for teens ages 14 to 18 who are navigating complex emotions or frequency critical situations. The adolescent DBT track is skilled based and includes individual and group counseling. One part I liked about this program is it helps teens to learn how to regulate their emotions and handle stressful situations in a healthier way.

Focused Treatment for Trauma and Serious Mental Illness

This isn’t a general therapy office where everyone gets the same approach. Adults and seniors can also find a ton of different support options here, too. From individual psychotherapy to trauma-focused counseling the clinic here at Mental Health Systems offers a lot of programs for people who are living with serious mental illness.

A lot of the focus of what Mental Health Systems does is teaching people to break down big ideas like emotional regulation and distress tolerance into steps that make sense even for those who have tried other therapy strategies before. And the group therapy they offer becomes a space to practice new ways of thinking with other people and not just a safe place to vent.

Treatment Meets Real Life Schedules

They’re open weekdays from 8 AM to 8 PM, which makes it easier to fit any therapy session into busy schedules. There are some people who have mentioned they’ve had a really great experience working with Mental Health Systems, especially with their DBT program. They also treat chronic pain and developmental disorders within their network. But there are other people who have said communication and insurance can be confusing.

We had an ok experience for intake but doing the intro appointment before DBT with my teen made me so uncomfortable. The person we spoke to was robotic and had no sense of life. They were vehemently focused on being on script and really came off kind of cold. My teen made a silly remark and the response was night and day compared to the intake person that made us feel comfortable. We are not going to even bother moving forward because of how awful that intro to DBT appointment went. Just because you went to school and got a degree doesn’t mean this is the job for you. If you have no joy or life to you, you are a help to no one in crisis. I’m really disappointed because DBT helped me so much I was hoping to get my daughter the same help. Not from here it looks like.

Our daughter started out finding DBT somewhat helpful, but after her DBT facilitator/therapist changed it actually worked against her mental health. From our daughter's feedback, the new therapist seemed very robotic and unconcerned with the group members feelings. They were more concerned with facilitating based on the "script" than showing their humanity so that the group members could relate to them and feel safe sharing their concerns, progress, etc. Our daughter felt called out on several occasions and having social anxiety that was really difficult for her. Granted our daughter does have some mental health issues, but that's why she is in DBT (as are most group members) so I personally feel the therapists should be more skilled in helping set expectations and helping group members learn how to work through their experiences and feelings in a healthy way. That's what DBT is for. Instead of helping our daughter learn skills to help her work through difficult emotions, the way the therapist handled the group created more frustration and anger and no guidance or safe space to work through that.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

I did not have a good experience at this location. The therapist never sent over information for DBT program so I missed multiple groups. The therapist also would not send over zoom links until hours after the scheduled appointment or would get an apology email and she would miss the appointment all together. I don’t think it’s very acceptable to be acting like that as a therapist. If I were you I would avoid the stress and go elsewhere for therapy.

Was told they don’t accept my insurance. Was told they don’t even bill the secondary insurance company if you have one and it gets denied. I have heard of a clinic not billing the secondary insurance company if it is denied by the primary insurance company.

Absolute best DBT services in the Twin Cities. Extremely welcoming and caring environment and amazing staff. I can’t recommend this place enough!

This place is very hit or miss. I remember going here back in 2017 and finding parts of it actually quite helpful especially the group aspect but it wasn’t without flaws. And I would say part of what actually made it good was that I had a good group facilitator Kaila Velarde and great group members. But when I went back in 2020 which was obviously a harder year than most my experience was not so good. They hire mostly less experienced facilitators and DBT therapists. Also the DBT program is somewhat rigid which goes back to if Dbt is even all that valid of a therapy when it can be overly-structured with the main focus on skills.

Kristin Kildahl has by far the worst bed side manner. She was more interested in her computer and did not pay attention to my answers and i had to repeat myself frequently.
