About Peninsula Hospital

Peninsula Hospital is a 155-bed behavioral health facility in Louisville, Tennessee. Here, they provide inpatient and outpatient treatments for children, teens, adults, seniors and those with co-occurring disorders.

This hospital sits beside Fort Loudoun Lake in a tree-filled rural area. Their program uses a holistic approach that integrates psychological, educational and medical treatments to promote healing and wellness.
Peninsula Behavioral Health accepts most insurance carriers, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, and UnitedHealth Group. Cash or self-pay options are available on a sliding scale.

This facility has mixed reviews. Some previous clients reported effective treatment and positive experiences with staff. Others however, were dissatisfied with the facility’s communication, activities and accommodations.

Free Addiction Programs in Tennessee

I greatly appreciate that Peninsula works to provide life-saving addiction treatment for those most in need.

Their Women in Treatment program is for uninsured women between 18 and 64 years of age. Priority is given to pregnant women and people who use drugs intravenously.

Their Recovery Link initiative connects folks with substance use disorders with the right treatment programs. This service is free of charge.

Comprehensive Addiction Treatment in Louisville

I like that Peninsula Hospital provides acute inpatient services for children, teens and adults. This includes 24-hour supervision, medication management and care from a multidisciplinary team. Aftercare planning including referrals to other departments is offered to every patient.

They also provide outpatient services for Blount County residents. This includes group, family and individual therapy. For children over 4, they run support groups tailored to their ages and development.

Their intensive outpatient program (IOP) gives you more structure and support than the general outpatient program. It focuses on improving the substance abuse issues that get in the way of successfully living your life.

This place is more detrimental to mental health than helpful. A lot of the techs here have attitudes towards the patients; and if you're placed in the women's unit, they are on their phones often. When you ask to see the doctor or therapist, they never come. I have an inhaler, and I wasn't allowed to bring it in. They told me they would get me one while I was in there, and they did not. They moved me to a different unit with a shower in my room, which was nice. But as soon as I started to feel better and have a happier attitude, they moved me back to the women's unit where there are 12 beds in one large room and they keep the lights on at night. The women's unit is full of people with any type of psychotic issue and feels extremely unsafe. The staff watch you take showers and use the restroom. They should be placing people in units based on the severity of diagnosis. Although most of the staff had passive attitudes, there were a few that seemed to care. I voluntarily went in for help with my depression, but I soon realized this place was going to make things worse for me. I asked to leave, and they said I would be able to leave when they felt I was ready. When the staff doesnt pay attention to the patients, I didnt know how long that would take. Turns out its Tennessees law, even if a person volunteers to commit themselves, the facility can keep them there. If you are really in need of help, this is not the place to get it.

I admitted voluntarily primarily for immediate crisis intervention and resources for therapy and insurance going forward. You need to know this ahead of time if you voluntarily admit. If you feel you are ready to leave and they are not listening I was told you could leave ama (against medical advice) however I was not told that they then had 72 hours to decide to release me or not. So basically if you feel they are not listening to you they can hold you for three days and even potentially go a step further and commit you. If committed it usually would double your time there. This means there is no true voluntary status. You are surrendering your immediate future to staff and hope they listen. I have a degree in education and I m a literal public speaking coach and still no matter how much I communicated my needs it seemed to not make much of a difference. I was held three days longer than I needed to be. Unfortunately this means no matter how bad I get I will never voluntarily admit again. The techs and nurses seemed to genuinely care about patients. I specifically want to say that nurses Jenny and Emily were amazing kind ears and patient advocates for me. Give them the cute little stars I know you all wear on your badges lol I have no idea what the therapists are like since I only talked to one the day I admitted and had my name on the therapy request section of the board for the rest of the time. The activity s were the only thing that kept the place from feeling like jail. I strongly believe patients need the option to be outdoors for hours daily. This includes the weekend. Unfortunately there was an obvious sense of infantilization. We were treated like we were completely unable to be rational and know our own needs. The constant rotation of random nursing students was not productive to us as patients. Roan State treated us like actual people and I enjoyed speaking with them. South College students were okay. TN Tech students however acted like they were scared of us for some reason.Never get yourself admitted for the weekend. They are extremely understaffed, your primary therapist, caseworker and psychologist will not be there and there is no activities. They make sure you have lots of food so no worries on that end. The staff are not making enough from the job. Pay them more and hire more people so they don t get burnout.I m still alive and I have some resources so the place did its job . My goal was somewhat met and therefore the reason for the rating. However now I have trauma from the place and feeling completely powerless at my lowest point.

Horrible experience. I went there on a SI hold from a ER and man did I get the smoke when I got there. They lock you out of your room all day when you need rest to recover. It's more like punishment than help. Had a panic attack that could have simply been treated with a pill or talking to me but no they sent me to the IM side with the psychotic people. Also I was threatened by the Dr if I went to the ER he would keep me two weeks. This place is horrible.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When your day-to-day life is taken over by drug use, this is known as substance use disorder. If you abruptly stop using your drug of choice, you experience withdrawal symptoms. To overcome this cycle, professional drug rehab in Tennessee is usually needed.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

While engaged in couples therapy in Tennessee, you'll learn how to trust, communicate, forgive, and manage emotions. Developing these skills can be beneficial at any time during the relationship, but they are particularly crucial when facing life challenges.

I was sent here twice as a juvenile/adolescent. I have plenty of horrible stories, but the biggest one that plays back in my head just about anytime I think of this hell hole, is when I was switched rooms without any given reason. Well I get comfortable in my room, & decide to use the restroom. The restroom had a pool of blood from where another adolescent tried/did harm herself. Anyways just wanted to say if you consider sending your child/teenager here… you probably need the help more. UPDATE: they responded with a phone # you can call just like the rest of the bad reviews. Had to speak to a robot just to finally get put on the line with a real human, & they didn’t even have anyone working the position that I was supposed to be able to contact through that phone #… I regret not taking legal action, I know by now it’s too late. But it’s time move forward in life. PLEASE take your adolescent or young adult to ANY OTHER FACILITY to get help PLEASE.

They gave me the tools to help myself the first time. I was able to perform miracles with their help. Mind you I was poor in a way for the following years. They gave up on me for my illness. This said the next visit some years down the road I was barely ill. They treated me like I was a menace to society, the lawyer lied about me even though I was trying to meet them halfway. It felt like I was being retaliated against for not wanting to be indoctrinated into his politics. He said I wanted to cause a school shooting when I was working on creating a catalogue of music that'd put Elvis to shame. This said I felt like a high value target, a victim of labels whom are for profit therefore pro suffering, that was made to be mentally impaired but also financially crippled as well. My life was so special that I had sung more words than spoken near 18 my brain was special beyond conventional understanding as I sit now watching vids on how special my brain was and how ravaged it was for wanting to show people a different way forward propagated via extreme self care for myself and others. Responsibly empowering them. A lifetime of effort ruined by the lie of a lawyer acting on behalf of self serving interest and likely a greater nexus of political influence using again I reiterate dark psychology to prevent me from addressing the record. Edit* it's like they saw this review near full and tried to harm me more...bc I can't highlight it Side note if this didn't happen the doctors could do their job without faulter as they are beautiful great compassionate people if you can just meet them halfway. Note I have brain damage as a result of the perpetual meds. ALWAYS be astute and informed in the ongoing understandings provided with your medication. But with psychiatry as a whole a divided field. That does seek to imbue you with an opinionated stance that is from the elderly generation via generations of abuse and bad apples in the system intentionally making your stay here tougher even after their deaths. The first stay was 5 star but felt like 1 star bc of this the next was a solid 2 star the last to reparate the second stay was a 1.5 star... As a whole given the outcome and all the damages accrued I'd say one star given how protective they're supposed to be for their patients. I sense conflict of interest.. No doctor should have to go through residency to put up with that scenario. Yet doctors do group up in highly opinionated cliques where care can vary due to greed and debt and desires to want families. To secure this the clique or fraternity is formed at the end of the day the patients suffer antithetical of the cause of the doctors creed. They got caught lying in their diagnosis and as a result, a patient was admitted to manipulate the situation into making it seem like I wasn't enduring cult abuse by stitching my brain together with speech and threats in fight or flight that were matching my actions. Essentially narrating someone's life while they were in the unit. Goal being was to infantilize my health. So a likely Opus Dei can try and argue I'm not holy while I'm enduring the recovery from this to justify more of this even though I was there due to a hunger strike to protest a myriad of problems which is antithetical to my need for individualized medical care for my physical health not a cult tactic to cover up their lies in reasoning by giving me brain damage and making my life both manageable and profilable in a cult type of way. Also they groomed me while I had brain damage from a spiritual fast. Then tried to cover up the damage I have as a result of the troubled teens act. Long story short if you need help seek it immediately and maybe in few instances it will limit your need for meds long term. Not medical advice. Also they groomed me while I was in their facility again near the end of my last stay. But more so committed what can't be described as higher crimes against humanity. Spiritual abuse cult abuse After healing from a years long problem I left sicker than entered physicallyDoctor dreams crushed...

I was there for a simple med adjustment, but housed in a ward with a patient so violent that she eventually kicked our prescriber with both feet, and so disturbed that she roamed all night every night of my stay, screaming. Eventually she was subdued by 9 night staff members, but let out of confinement. Do not send your loved ones here. It is basically a prison.
