About Porter Starke Services

Porter Starke Services is a nonprofit organization that serves adults who are struggling with their mental health, addiction struggles or other psychiatric recovery needs. With several clinics throughout Northwest Indiana, you’ll find compassionate and comprehensive care here through their continuum of services. Their Portage Campus, located in Portage, Indiana provides outpatient care that’s individualized to your recovery needs. They accept Medicare and Medicaid. There are also sliding scale fees available if you qualify.

As a state certified Community Mental Health Center (CMHC), this organization implements the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic treatment model. This is a model that uses evidence based practices like cognitive behavioral therapies and goal-setting to help you navigate recovery.

There are specialized therapists that can help you tackle a range of struggles whether they’re related to your substance use recovery or mental health needs. At the Portage clinic, women in recovery can also get connected to supportive housing as well.

In addition to providing comprehensive clinical care, they also offer various support and services to those in the community. For example, individuals in recovery who are also navigating school can apply to their Impact Scholarship, which can help fund portions of your educational expenses.

They also have community spaces like the Labyrinth, where you can venture outdoors and reflect on your recovery through a maze walking path. It’s through this balance of evidence based practices and holistic support that Porter Starke Services can provide impactful care to the residents they serve.

My therapist is absolutely fantastic, but I got better insurance than state insurance and apparently none of them take the better insurance, So for me to speak to my therapist, I would have to pay out of pocket and get no discount even though I just went through the most traumatic experience of my life. I'm absolutely disgusted that the mental health, or health care system in this country is so broken that they can't offer some sort of rectification. But instead they were trying to transfer me to a different therapist that takes my insurance and I've been with my therapist for almost 2 years, why on earth would I want to start over? Absolutely disgusted.

I was, until recently, a patient of Porter Starke Portage. I was informed that my status had been downgraded to "inactive" because I did not meet with my physician for a year. However, I had an active prescription during that time, and I was never called or emailed to inform me of the policy. At no point during the year did I receive a call or an email to schedule an appointment. Now, I find myself unexpectedly without access to my medication. This is unacceptable, and I am wholly upset by the lack of professionalism I have experienced in the care of Porter Starke Portage. For an organization that claims to want to support the mental health of its patients, Porter Starke Portage seems largely indifferent to the day-to-day lives and obstacles of its patients. At best, this is asinine business practice. At worst, this is active negligence.Porter Starke Portage has not met my expectations for care, and worse they have worsened the very mental health condition I sought help for.I was a fairly happy patient of Porter Starke Portage until yesterday. Now, unless this situation is remedied, I plan to inform all of my friends, family members, co-workers, and receptive acquaintances online and in person to avoid Porter Starke Portage. As a public high school teacher and a Mental Health Club sponsor, I cannot, at this moment, recommend a mental health service that so clearly undervalues the nuances and details of mental health care.I understand that details get lost in the sauce sometimes. That said, I would hope that an organization that deals with mental health would make active communication a bigger priority. You have a responsibility to your patients who, by definition, are perhaps not at their best mentally.

Accepted Insurance

Porter Starke Services works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When families plan a drug intervention in Indiana, the goal is to create self-awareness in their loved one, so they acknowledge the need for treatment and get help. A professional interventionist can work with the individual's family members to organize this intervention and provide direction for follow-up. During the intervention, loved ones share how the individual's substance abuse has affected them, and the interventionist adds a clinical perspective on how treatment can help the situation.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients receiving support in a rehab aftercare program have completed inpatient care and may also be preparing to exit formal outpatient care. Outpatient services are typically categorized as rehab aftercare, but these services often continue beyond the cessation of formal treatment. Rehab aftercare services are designed to promote life-long recovery through comprehensive, wraparound care, which may include medical, mental health, and social services. These programs are usually created in collaboration with the client's case manager and care team.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Qualified therapists in Indiana use a customized treatment approach for individual therapy to address your drug and alcohol addiction treatment. This considers your past history and life circumstances to help you uncover the underlying issues that trigger addictive behavior and manage these factors to support a healthy approach to recovery.

The goal of family therapy in Indiana is to empower family members to effectively support their loved one's recovery. Therapists work with family members to develop the skills needed to manage stress and resolve conflicts successfully. This fosters a positive environment that is conducive to long term sobriety.

In couples therapy, you and your partner work with a psychologist to identify challenges in the relationship and what changes need to be made. You'll work on listening, communicating, and navigating those changes in healthy ways.

During trauma therapy in Indiana, your therapist helps you process traumatic experiences and learn how they affect your emotional, mental, and physical responses. You learn effective coping strategies that help to reduce the symptoms and improve your mental health and well being.

When you participate in cognitive behavioral therapy in Indiana, you'll learn to recognize distorted thinking that has led to substance use. Your therapist will help you establish new patterns of thinking and healthy ways to cope with challenges that don't involve substance use.

I don't know why they have a phone if they never answer it. Then the times they have available for counseling are really inconvenient to work into your schedule.

Tonight I made the decision to not go back again. My therapist was absolutely wonderful and honestly should look for a better job. I was there because a have an anxiety disorder and panic disorder. I informed my doctor that I'm a recovering alcoholic and 2 years sober. I started telling him about my conditions and his reaction was "oh, I won't treat you for that ".... wow.

I’ve been going to Porter Starke since I was a small child and I’m about to be 33. There has not been one person ever in existence that worked there that I was impressed with from the doctors to the receptionists until the last couple years. And I won’t even lie I’m kind of a “difficult” person to deal with. Shyleena with case management there is an absolute saint of a woman. She may be a youngin but I know for a fact nobody does or ever will do that job better than her. And Amber the therapist there has changed me in ways I thought were unimaginable. She has helped me heal from things I never spoke about they hurt so bad, but she made me feel so comfortable and safe that it was almost easy. She has not only helped me to become a better human but also a better mother. Such a better mother that my 13 year old (definitely the “naughty” one out of the 2) told me my green flags were respect and communication. Helping me break generational curses and I’m so happy!! Also, there’s a girl who is a receptionist there that I spoke with today and she’s the best one they’ve had in all the years I’ve been going there and I wish I would have asked her her name. But shout out to her for going above and beyond!! And lastly, Micah the psychiatrist who is actually in the Valparaiso location so I’ll leave his review there so people know!! Hope corporate sees this and does something more than say “oh great you got a review that actually made our company look good” for these amazing people who go above and beyond what is asked of them and genuinely do a job because they love and care and support. Those 4 people are the ones who should be getting promotions and raises and be in charge of training everyone. Bet these ratings here would go up.

I have been through multiple counselors programs and doctors and they have always been amazing, only one doc I didn't exactly love but she was ok . Otherwise everyone is great especially Andrea, she is the best person I have ever delt with, she listens never judges and is always understanding when it comes to anything life throws our way. She genuinely cares and does her job to the best of her ability and it shows. I have no complaints with her at all. They are extremely busy as a whole so regardless who or what your going for it's a bit of a wait for appointments, that's the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. But between Andrea and her nurses and even the girls at the front desk to the pharmacist, they do anything and everything they can to accommodate your needs, to me it's worth the wait and they are on it anyway even if u can't get in for an appointment right away they actually care about you and its obvious they do! I'm so happy to have Andrea and her team on my side ! Thanks for being awesome !

A family member of mine recently stayed in their inpatient facility. As a mental health professional myself, I know that the system has its imperfections but I have never witnessed abuse from a health professional like I did at this facility while visiting my relative. Dr. Verma is dangerous and should have her license revoked. It truly broke my heart to witness how these individuals were treated. It seemed as though staff members followed her lead and treated patients the same as she.

This office is HORRIBLE! For 2 months now my husband and I have been promised we would be a returned phone call for investigation for misdiagnosis and not properly diagnosing my child . Allowing whoever and whatever to bring in my son while his other parent in for treatment. Allowing his therapist to tell a minor child “do not tell your mom the medication “ medications are not even coming home correctly . We have called and called and called . The therapist when the school and my son had report some serious issues did not follow protocol with state reporting . They never return a phone call especially when it is a legal parent ! My son has needed his medication up for 2 months now and his other parental refuses to have it up or give the medication properly and the staff is doing nothing about it or reporting or involving my husband and I . They just keep avoiding . We were promised a 10000 times Sandy Carlson would be in contact with us and has never once returned a phone call or nothing . This office needs to be turned in and shut down ! For not following protocol or their staff
