About Saint Elizabeths Hospital – Behavioral Healthcare Services

For Belleview, Illinois residents, Saint Elizabeth Hospital – Behavioral Healthcare Services made it a mission to bridge the gap between crisis and recovery for those struggling with substance use disorder. Through its partnership with the Gateway Foundation, Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital offered a Warm Handoff program. The Warm Handoff Program helped patients transition seamlessly from emergency care to addiction treatment. This approach was designed to eliminate the common barriers that prevented individuals from seeking help and ensured that those who were ready to make a change had immediate access to the support they needed.

Warm Handoff Program for Addiction Help

Whether a patient arrived at the emergency department due to an overdose, withdrawal symptoms or another substance-related crisis, they were quickly connected with an engagement specialist through the Warm Handoff Program. The engagement specialist was a licensed addiction counselor or a clinical social worker. They assessed the patient’s needs and discussed treatment options available in the emergency department.

Unlike the previously available traditional models of handing out a phone number or brochure to the patients in need, Saint Elizabeth’s used to take a more hands-on approach. If the person who was seeking help agreed to treatment, a recovery coach would work to provide encouragement and help with childcare, transportation and support. The recovery coach offered by the Warm Handoff program would be someone who had experienced long-term recovery and addiction.

Mental Health Support

Saint Elizabeth’s also integrated mental health support into its recovery planning. Counselors previously used motivational interviewing techniques to help patients find the personal desire to seek change. Plus, they also had peer-led support groups that patients could access during all stages of their recovery process. By offering non-judgmental immediate assistance, they played a crucial role in guiding individuals toward a healthier and more stable life.

I am so impressed with this hospital and their staff! I suffer from chronic migraines. I dread going to the ER. Anyone who suffers from debilitating migraines knows the ER is the last resort because of how awful we are treated. Not here!Nurse Tabitha was kind, gentle, compassionate, understanding and took care of me quickly. Dr. Tara was empathetic and truly cared about my condition. They were fast, professional, and truly listened. God Bless those women! And the gentlemen who checked me in were just as sweet as could be. Thank you!!!

My wife's grandma had a mini stroke today and arrived at the emergency room around 4:00 pm....it is now 12:10 am and she still hasn't seen a Dr. My wife is 5 months pregnant and has not had a real meal since 4 pm because she has to wait to hear from the Dr since her grandma has dementia and will not remember anything....we were planning on having our baby delivered at the new St Elizabeth's hospital but since it will be the same staff just a new building I am highly opposed to this now ....what kind of hospital leaves an elderly sick woman without her medicine for 8 hours because she can not have any of her prescriptions until she speaks to a Dr?

Buyer beware!! Be careful getting any test from this place. I got a CT scan and the admissions person told me my portion was 250 dollars so I proceed with the CT scan. When the bill arrived I owed 1810.00 and the total cost of the scan was 4300.00. I called the billing dept and told the lady that I was told my pay out was 250.00. The lady said " "how would we know that you owe use 1810.00" I was floored with her response since I trusted this place. After doing research on the type CT scan I got found out I could have had it done for under 1000.00. Elsewhere. If they would have told me up front what the true cost was I would have never got the test done by them. I will never go back to St Elizabeth for any kind of care. Personally I'm glad they are leaving Belleville.

Accepted Insurance

Saint Elizabeths Hospital – Behavioral Healthcare Services works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I just deleted a one star review for St. Elizabeth's, because I just had a baby at this hospital and the experience was AMAZING (and I was afraid it was going to be awful). All of the nurses I've dealt with since I came into the fourth floor having contractions have been unbelievable. They have been attentive, helpful, patient, and kind. I can honestly say they have helped my husband and I prepare to take our little guy home. They have helped us make the best decision for our family while exploring all options and never once complained. I never imagined I would have such a good birthing experience; it truly has been perfect. St. Elizabeth's is lucky to have the staff on this floor. If you want excellent nurses to help you when having a child, this is the place to go. I cannot recommend them enough.

I was admitted and I was told that I was in network but I wasn't and now I have a 13,000 bill for a 23 hour observation. They won't work with me, they are telling me they have no idea who's in network and who is not in network. If they don't know if I'm in network how should I know???

This rating is purely for the ER staff. Two out of the three most embarrassing experiences of my life have happened in these halls and I'll explain them here for the Google world to know that if you need to be seen do what you can to get to memorial. This rating is purely for the ER staff. Two out of the three most embarrassing experiences of my life have happened in these halls and I'll explain them here for the Google world to know that if you need to be seen do what you can to get to memorial. The first was I was being admitted for shingles. Yes. Painful and confusing and scary especially when you don't have any idea what is going on with something with such a sudden onset. The woman who came to take my medical history was incredibly rude to begin with, no introduction and no badge. When I asked who she was and her credentials because something was amiss with her appearance and attitude she responded with hostility and belittled my situation because I wanted to know who I was giving such personal information to. At the time the diagnosis was new and I was very ashamed of my HIV status so what happened next had me in tears. After she gathered what seemed to be every piece of non related information possible this heartless beast of a woman left my ER room with my door wide open and stepped a few feet out of sight and shouted, YES SHOUTED to another person that I was HIV positive and that I was very pathetic in nature... I couldn't believe my ears. I could see directly into the room across the hall from me and when this cruel individual did what they did a mother of another patient across the hall saw the tears well up in my eyes and with a saddened and disgusted look on her face slowly walked over to close her son's ER room door. The other nurses tried to find out why I was crying and distressed but I passed it off as the pain from my current situation. The second situation was just the other night. I went to Urgicare one morning for pain emanating from my testicles. As I am not sexually active and had received no trauma to the area the pain was causing me concern. The kind nurse and Urgicare showed concern and informed me that if the pain persisted or got worse or more symptoms showed that I needed to report to the ER immediately. The pain worsened and seemed to migrate its epicenter to my middle torso. During the first visit I was cared for and found out that I had a severe case of pancreatitis leaving my pancreas "larger than my stomach". They were very worried and wanted to send me to surgery immediately and have it taken out. We decided that with close monitoring and a liquid diet that I could get the inflammation down and on my own decipher the cause. I am not an alcoholic nor do I eat red meat but a few times a year so the cause is a mystery as of right now. As directed before I was told that if I have any symptoms persist or worsen that I need to return to the ER as soon as possible. I had now acquired a insane burning and itching sensation all over my body but mostly in my extremities. The doctor, Dr. Leech, was rude enough to almost push me to tears again because I knew I would not be helped and instead got nothing but a LARGE bill out of the visit she left. I was left in the room for over 2 hours before a nurse returned to give me some dimetapp for the crazy reaction I was having to the meds. After the nurse left she left the door closest to the nurses station cracked and the doctor jumped to question the nurse as soon as she left the room. During the discussion she flat out accused me of "looking for a high" and that I was faking it and that she wanted some tests run to determine my state of mind and sobriety and that after that I need to be "kicked out". I attached an image of my arm taken just before writing this review. I am no doctor but I'm pretty positive these could be hives due to an allergic reaction.

Very fast (came in early morning) and very helpful... The doctor was very efficient, but still patient and willing to answer questions/explain... Even at 6am when she'd just gotten in for the morning!

I had my second c-section here and will not have anything else done here, keep in mind what happens after having a baby.the worst part of this was upon My discharge a nurse in training was helping tree nurse there and literally split a part of My incision and it took forever to heal and was painful and never even mentioned doing it like it never happened until my husband told me what happened when we were leaving. My bedding and trash was only changed once in three days. My bathroom trash was overflowing and I rarely received help with anything. Except for a nurse who didn't even work in that floor subbing for a l&d nurse. If it wasent for her I would have had to figure out how to shower on my own barely being able to walk, and thank God for her changing my trash and bedding. They barely wanted to give me pain medication when I truly needed it. The only thing that was acceptable during my stay was the care my daughter received. Great doctors and nurses for the newborns.
