Our daughter entered Visions at 16, and it was one of the best decisions we ever made. From the very beginning, the care, structure, and support she received were outstanding. The staff are not only highly trained professionals, but genuinely compassionate people who truly understood the challenges teens and their families face. The programming was incredibly well rounded, from different therapy modalities to engaging activities that kept her motivated and involved. Family therapy was a cornerstone of the experience for us; it helped rebuild trust and communication in ways we never expected. We were reassured by how much attention was given to creating a safe, comfortable environment where our daughter could focus on healing. The on-site school was excellent and kept her on track academically, which made her transition back home much smoother. Today, our daughter is 3.5 years sober, thriving in her life, and continues to build on the foundation that was laid during her time in treatment. We are forever grateful for the role Visions played in her recovery and in our family’s healing.

I randomly thought of googling Visions today and was excited to see the support for the many one star reviews. I would like to give my own, honest review as a former illegal detainee at Visions Malibu. I was sent there because of declining grades during second semester of my senior year in high school, which my parents attributed to weed. Amanda and Chris, if you read this, know that I understand why you do what you do, but that you two directly caused irrevocable harm to my and my parents’ lives. The same can be said by many from my cohort I still keep in touch with. I have succeeded *despite* crossing paths with your business, not because of it. As for the “miracles” I see on the walls in Visions HQ and in these reviews: I did not see these while I was there except maybe in the desperate behavioral changes detainees acted on in hopes to be sent home earlier. Let’s talk about the hidden dehumanization they perform on you at Visions that they don’t discuss on their websites. Don’t be fooled by the scenery, it’s essentially a white collar prison. It has strip searches, room tear-downs, abusive young staff on power trips, strict schedules with punishment for noncompliance, gaslighting from owners and “professional staff” even when I reported inappropriate or illegal behaviors to them, and the list goes on. You cannot leave any room without an escort, though doors are (rarely) locked due to fire hazards. Two girls tried to run and they brought in rescue helicopters, charged the parents for the fee despite not finding them, and the girls almost died from exposure before they were taken to a hospital by a local. They take away your shoes if they’re worried you’ll run. They can take away whatever they want to break you into compliance with their program. Most damaging of all, Visions focuses on retraining adolescents to be LESS independent and more dependent on their parents and a prison-like structure (which we all know works well in our prison systems). These facilities make a lot of money for the owners, so “recommending” parents that their child needs it isn’t anything but a scam. Recently, Paris Hilton and others have been championing awareness in congressional hearings about the unconstitutional and abusive behaviors that go on at these centers. I root for them. I would never send my child to wilderness, county health, or Visions unless a jury required it. It is not a bandaid for parental negligence. You may laugh and say how good I had it at a ritzy mansion in Malibu with personal chefs. (At least it seems grand from my more modest upbringing.) Let’s be clear: I was kidnapped in the middle of the night and held involuntarily for months. I was a month away from graduating with a college admission to the University of California. This acceptance was rescinded due to the inability for the Visions school program to fulfill a final grade in my senior classes. To this day, I have never seen some of my classmates from back home ever again, and I did not get to graduate and celebrate with my friends and lifelong colleagues. Every day I prayed I’d get to leave. I still daydream about all the chances I could have ran and gotten help from a bystander. My parents fought for over a year with insurance to cover a portion of Visions, as the insurance deemed it non-medical and unnecessary. It hurt our family financially and my parents have openly apologized for their decision to send me here. We have grown closer despite Visions, not because of it. Oh and that addiction I had? I never had one. Visions doesn’t care!

Addiction Treatments

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

I worked as a program aide at Visions for 8 months. I saw the innermost workings of the company and worked directly with the kids. Working as a program aide at Visions was the most meaningful time of my life. Program aides spend the most time with the kids, and because of that I was able to watch the transformation happen. I saw kids come into Visions in psychosis, in deep depression, in immense anxiety, and in general suffering. I watched many miracles happen over the course of 45-60 days. And I saw those same kids who came into Visions so sick leave completely changed. Visions works because of their insistence on the family work. While Visions' residents are doing the work, their parents are doing the work along with them. Each kid at Visions has a Family Therapist, and individual therapist, a psychiatrist, an internist, a host of program aids, and a depth of specialty clinicians for CBT therapy, DBT therapy, eating disorders, OCD, ASD, Trauma. These kids have more help at their disposal at Visions than any human generally ever experiences. Offering this level of support in such a critical time in a teen's life sets them up for successes beyond their and their parents' dreams. I know because I saw it. I directly experienced the change. Visions is a beautiful place and I am grateful for every minute I got to tech there.

I was at Visions for over 100 days in 2022. While it carried challenges, as all programs and facilities do, I truly felt home there. Visions helped me beyond belief, and the staff (from therapists to techs to powers-that-be and more) were a crucial part in how I got to where I am now. I am endlessly thankful for Visions and everything they do.

I was sent voluntarily to Visions in January of 2021, I was 17 years old and incredibly vulnerable. During my first day I was left unattended in my room with no instructions so I decided to take a walk around the house and get a sense of where everything is, I was reprimanded for "attempting to run" and all of my shoes were confiscated. I wasn't allowed to see pictures of my family, nor write or draw in any of my journals until I reached "level one" despite writing and drawing being my only healthy coping mechanisms. I never reached level one. I very nearly made an attempt on my life while there, and when I went to the staff for help, they put me on "arms length" for nearly 24 hours until they finally took me to an emergency room. Once I was checked in, they left me alone in a hospital room, where I stayed for 24 hrs. Only contacting my parents by a phone at the nurses desk 13 hrs in, who seemed to have no idea I was there. I will never forget how I was treated during my time here, and my heart goes out to everyone else who survived this scam of a treatment center.

Our daughter is now four years out from her time at Visions in-patient treatment at the Mental Health House in Malibu. With immense gratitude and confidence I can say that Visions saved her life and changed our families trajectory. We are from Texas and were referred to Visions after our daughters stabilization at The Menninger Clinic in Houston. Looking back it still feels tender and very scary when I consider what led us to Visions. But without a doubt the process was as seamless, supportive, and filled with kindnesses as possible. Leaving our hurting and shattered child in the care of people we had only briefly met was not easy in any aspect. However, from our first phone call to drop off, John Lieberman was the epitome of professionalism. He provided compassion and helped my husband and I feel seen, supported and confident in our decision. As our daughter progressed through the program with ups, setbacks, downs and eventually steady progress, Ian Hogue, her primary therapist, was the key for her to be able to do the work she needed to do. Don't get me wrong, the wisdom of Visions leadership to pair Ian with our daughter was not initially clear. But after our first family weekend, the wisdom was quite clear. Ian's role now as a Parent Coach is definitely well lived and deserved. Visions helped us transition home to an IOP in our area that was just as thoughtful as it was excellent. After completing IOP and finishing her senior year in high school she went to college about an hour and a half away. She was able to and is still now seeing her original therapist. Please don't misunderstand, it hasn't been all rainbows and butterflies since her time at Visions four years ago. There have been ups, downs, pretty tough setbacks and even deeper growth for our daughter as well as for myself and my husband. And what is also a constant is how very thankful we are for our decision to take Menninger's recommendation to go to Visions Adolescent Treatment Center in Malibu. As a crazy side note, our daughter was at the house in Malibu for 5 days before the wildfires required evacuation. The team at Visions stayed in touch with us almost on an hourly basis. They had a contingency plan in place that allowed for uninterrupted treatment. Eventually there was a relocation to just as amazing a facility as the one in Topanga Canyon. Huge kudos for great planning and calm steady leadership during an unprecedented natural disaster.

The parent support group at Visions has been incredibly helpful and meaningful as my daughter has been in treatment. Visions supports not just the child in treatment but the whole family and continues the support even after the child leaves the treatment center. Amanda at visions is very resourceful, kind and available. And Amy H the therapist who moderates the parent support is a compassionate and understanding person who provides so much support for parents dealing with kids in various stages of recovery and sobriety. Visions is full of caring and supportive people.
