About Behavioral Health Services North

The center offers mental health services for children, adults and families. Counseling services include 24/7 crisis mental health services, school based services and personalized recovery services.

There are several special tracks in the substance use programs. These include a men’s program, a women’s program, an adolescent program, an adult program and a program for the hearing impaired.

The substance use treatment programs include an initial assessment and evaluation. If appropriate, you’ll receive medication assisted treatment (MAT). MAT is especially helpful if you have an opioid addiction such as heroin or prescription pain pills. If necessary, they offer a medical detox with support.

Substance use treatment also includes individual and group therapy. Many people with substance use disorders have co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, depression or bipolar disorder. You’ll work with a therapist to identify any co-occurring disorders that are a factor in your substance use. You may also receive medication management for co-occurring disorders.

They offer a 20 bed community residential program for men in substance use recovery. The program has 24/7 support. The average length of stay is six months. You’ll work on recovery, life skills and a plan for reentering the community.

There are also several safe, affordable housing options for those recovering from mental illness. Some of the housing programs offer financial support. You’ll need to apply through the Clinton County Housing Coalition’s Housing and Rehabilitation Selection Committee.

I've had mostly good experiences here, with the practitioners and with the office staff. I have a feeling dissatisfied people write reviews of practitioners and staff than satisfied ones. I've been a patient for a couple of years now and mainly see psychiatrist Wendy Randall for medication for a life-long sleep/insomnia disorder. She's very understanding and not afraid to prescribe me my needed meds that I've been taking for a very long time and cannot sleep without. One has to also see a counselor here and Amy , my counselor, is a very good listener for the most part. I tend to miss appointments, especially with Amy, so see/talk with her, via telahealth, only so often . If i saw/talked with her more often perhaps it would help more. I also suffer from a lot of stress and unhappiness due to overwork so it's good to have people to "check in" with I don't agree at all that the folks at BHSN are prone to call the police or try to have committed to a psychiatric facility. I have admitted many times to feeling extremely and have no one here do that to me. On the other hand they certainly seem to take suicidal ideation seriously . I do feel bad for anyone not getting proper treatment for *serious* potential or likely suicide or not being referred to the right place for them but am not familiar with what is or isn't available in what area and don't know what to suggest The comments by some about supposed privacy and/or HIPPA violations are certainly concerning & upsetting and I don't know what to make of them. The most recent I see here is from a year ago. I certainly hope that if there was truth to those complaints that they've been seriously addressed and fixed /and any violations ceased ! If you're not happy with either your psychiatrist or counselor here I highly suggest trying another one at the same practice. I wasn't at all happy with the psychiatrist I was originally assigned . She was young (and i am not) and not comfortable prescribing me my all my sleep meds (which I have been taking for decades) I asked to try speaking with an older person and was assigned Wendy and have had no problems with her at all. Especially considering how often I miss appointments, I find this place, the office staff and the practitioners to be especially tolerant , kind and patient, and in fact moreso than any medical practice I've used since I moved to this area (Wilmington/Northern Adirondacks) over four years ago It might be ideal if one could call at any time when in need of someone too speak to and I think that service was previously but no longer available If there weren't so many seemingly unfair negative reviews I'd give a 4 *s since things are seldom completely perfect but I'm giving 5*s to bring the, imo, unfair total score up. If I could call and speak to anyone any time I needed to I would likely feel a 5* review is truly deserved and that my experience with BHSN is near-perfect

Accepted Insurance

Behavioral Health Services North works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I'm so sad to be writing this, unfortunately the place i use to feel supported and comfortable seeing a and counselor and psychiatrist for my chronic mood disorder, has really gone down the tubes. Please don't go hear expecting anything but bare minimum effort, no help advocating internally when issues arise with treatment. MAT paitens go somewhere else! I have had to wait passed when my medicine is due just for the script to be sent out over 24 hours late, its shocking. When I'm told I was called I expect a voicemail I wish I could post a screen shot to prove no one reached out. I know it sounds far fetched but this office has gone to hell since the new acquisition by another company. To much push for revenue I assume and not enough intospection and thought going twards patient experience, or bedside manor. Truly sad, my needs were not being met and when I started getting the feeling that I was asking to much for common bare minimum care my heart just sank and I knew it wasn't the same office anymore I started at when I was young. I asked for my records and left. Please look somewhere else REACH medical has a better MAT program by far or any other office that takes your insurance, I would advise first. Only use BHSN as a last option. this should, NOT BE THE CASE! Those working there in that field, ITS MAKING YOU ALL LOOK BAD being associated with this office. Let this be the last resort ITS BECOME... It's making Dr Astil look bad being associated here, the front end and incompetence of staff, the argumentative nature in which they interact is apauling. I'm an unwell mental health patient, why do I have to have patience beyond what considered normal or appropriate just to ask a question and get an answer for almost any situation that happens here? Is it me? Or is this office just to OVER CROWDED and under educated and trained aside from the few Drs in the halls. YOUR FAILING A WHOLE GROUP OF PEOPLE AND ASKING FOR THEIR TRUST ITS WRONG! treatment for individuals like myself IS HARD TO FIND your mission to provide effective care is Currently failing I mentioned I felt forgotten over looked and left behind, and no one followed up on it, is it because it was a real complaint and not one initiated by one of your servers that you can charge my insurance for because I sat with someone? I HAD THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER yesterday and that's 4 in a row now when trying to refill my medicine and miscommunication causing hours of delay. DONT GO HERE Im writing this for the people like me that struggle interacting in public and maybe can't advocate for themselves. BHSN when use to have visionary people bringing mental health to underserved children and people now it's a cash cow sell out and anything wrong is your fault in office now. The arrogance of the staff is so off-putting I'm surprised people come back. There was a time I didn't have enough good to say about this place now we are here. Hopefully you don't close with all the cuts to healthcare is all I say better to have garbage mental health treatment then non I guess please call me

Not vary helpful. Therapy should be about helping the person out not putting them on a crap ton of medication. I was put on so many different medications since I was 10 I’m 19 now. I never felt like myself with taking so many pills. My now fiancé has seen me without taking my meds I feel like myself again. I DONT feel like a hollowed out zombie no more.

Had to leave BHSN they don't slowly take you off your meds they just keep prescribing you new ones no matter how many times you tell them that you feel like a zombie. I also took my son out too now he's in a new practice doing a ton better. Also come to find out BHSN misdiagnosed me I found a new counselor and now that im in intensive therapy and doing a lot better. Mentally and physically.

Response from the owner
