About Haverhill Pavilion Behavioral Health Hospital

Haverhill Pavilion Behavioral Health Hospital is a psychiatric facility that offers inpatient (IP) drug and alcohol rehab services. They are located in Haverhill, Massachusetts. They treat adults with substance and alcohol use disorder. They also treat people who have been diagnosed with substance use disorder and alcohol use disorder at the same time.

You will be given a physical and psychiatric assessment when you enter the facility. The information obtained from this assessment will let the staff know what kind of therapy to treat you with. You’ll participate in group therapy sessions every day several times a day while you are there. Individual and family therapy will be given on a needed basis.

If you have a mental health condition that requires medication, the staff can prescribe it to you. The staff can also provide you with basic medical care.

This facility offers one program for adults from the ages of 19 to 49 and another for people who are older than that. This is a rarity in rehab facilities. People often feel more comfortable sharing in groups with people in their own age group who have experienced some of the same things they have.

They offer a variety of different treatment methods. Therapists most often use behavioral cognitive therapy (CBT) and sensory modulation to treat substance use disorder. This teaches you to think differently in order to behave differently. They also provide recreational therapy which uses team sports and group challenges to build confidence and cooperation skills.

I still feel extremely triggerd by this place, over a week later and still having nightmares, this place should be shut down. I still smell the guy who was my roommate. Don't know why they let him ferment in his own filth.....and left his urine and fecal staind cloths in a pile in the room. The staff injoyed using there positions to berate and cut down the mentally ill. They enjoy laughing at other people...just another thing for my ptsd to get set off...

The place is a dump! The pictures on website are very misleading, and most BHA's are incredibly condescending. Will say both Physc and Med doctors were very good. The wing I was on was completely delapated. Mold in and ceiling vents, wood wrought around sinks and water fountains. All in all I would never comeback here again. One last note, there were some patients who did not belong on the same wing as most others.

Accepted Insurance

Haverhill Pavilion Behavioral Health Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer customized, wraparound support for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery. Many clients enroll in drug rehab immediately after completing intensive inpatient or residential care. Services encompass outpatient treatment but often extend long beyond the completion of a formal recovery program and typically include a variety of medical, mental health, and social service programs. Peer coaching, relapse prevention, 12 step program induction, and related services are commonly available.
12-step icon12-Step
Recovery models based on 12 step programs feature extensive peer coaching and emphasize personal growth as a key to sustained sobriety. Regular attendance at 12 step meetings, which are anonymous, free, and available daily, is expected. The 12 steps of recovery are based on spiritual principles and support participants in addressing the root causes of their disease, accept responsibility for their choices, and accept that which is beyond their control. Self-selected sponsors provide one-one-mentoring.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses the psychological impact of experiencing a traumatic event. You can also experience mental and emotional injury after witnessing a trauma. By identifying what triggers those responses and developing effective coping mechanisms, you can rebuild a sense of safety and trust in your environment.

Obviously a psych ward stay is always a tough time, and this is one of the most intense ones I’ve ever seen, but the staff really makes or breaks a place like this. And the staff in the North unit were incredible. They were firm when they had to be, and amazingly kind and patient for the rest of it. There was never a single moment which I felt unsafe in their care. It takes a particular kind of soul to work in a place where everyone’s at their lowest, and all the staff members I met demonstrated that. I took away something from each of them that truly helped shape how I’m going to hold myself and think about things going forward. I’m grateful to have met them, that they were there to help put me back on track, and that there are selfless people like them to protect folks with mental health issues/addiction struggles when they aren’t in a position to protect themselves. I wish I could list all the staff’s names here, it just would be too long of a review if I did so. North unit folks, if you read this, I hope you know that I mean every single one of you. You all are amazing. (That said, please give Logan a forced paid vacation— I feel like I saw that man more than half the patients I was residing with.) Other psych wards I’ve stayed in have been nothing but traumatic. In contrast, I can genuinely say my stay at Haverhill has been for my greater good because of the people there (staff and patients alike). My love to you all, and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I just visited my son there. I have never seen him this bad off. The staff are rude. The place is dirty. My son’s clothes were stolen and nothing is being done. If you can go somewhere else definitely go this place should be shut down.

Well, Human Services is in severe crisis. With that said, places like these are not properly funded. They are in fact dreary dumps, dirty and falling apart inside and out. They serve subpar food that will inflame your bowels while a patient here. Those working at this facility are not paid well, they have problems of their own and they try to take care of human animals that are ill in various ways. If we want places like these to run properly, money is needed to pay the employees a decent wage, money is needed to get decent psychiatrists in to diagnose and spend time doing so with the patients here. Currently, the doctor here meets with you for a few minutes, then another doctor meets with you for a few minutes then wham…you have new meds and you are on your way back home or you are retained in this dump that feeds you processed, cheap food that messes with your guts while a patient there. I’m still trying to have normal bowel movements after being released from this facility over a month ago. In the USA, funding is NOT properly allocated to taking care of the human beings in this country. We no longer have people in this country that want to do the kind of work it takes to care for the mentally, emotionally, drug addicted human animals we have running around this country.. Many of those doing this work are OVERWORKED and exhausted, some are just in it briefly for a paycheck and couldn’t care less but most in this line of work are truly just trending water….they see a lot, they are abused on a daily basis verbally, physically and mentally…. they are under payed and we expect them to show up with a smile. LOL. You are all expecting way too much from your fellow human animals that do this work. This country has lost it’s way…greed has taken over and true humanitarians are far and few between. I give it 3 stars only for the workers here that show up with a slight smile…it must be very difficult to muster.

Dr. Lipin told me I was a liar when I told him about intense side effects from medications. I was kept for 6 weeks and wasn't really given a good explanation as of why. I did 3 3-day forms, and none of them were honored. I would recommend this place to be shut down.

In my experience as a patient, the nurses and staff are under resourced for the pure generalness of the patients admitted. Some patients are extremely stable and others have delusions that staff are not equipped to deal with at the facility. Because of this, I found there was really no “treatment” or even “stabilization,” just watching and meds. Outside time was walking around a square patio in circles, which itself was not helpful at all and even the “higher coherency” group I was invited to was not anything to do with therapeutic treatment. I wish there were counseling resources and more personalized experiences as I was lumped in with so many different levels of stability that ultimately made me feel dehumanized. Haverhill did not help at all.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Our goal is to deliver the highest quality of behavioral healthcare services, and we appreciate receiving feedback. However, the concerns expressed here are troubling, and we would be grateful for an opportunity to gather more in-depth details. Please contact us directly at Feedback@haverhillpavilion. Thank you.

A mothers NIGHTMARE! That’s what it feels like when you have a loved one dealing w/ mental illness compounded by “legal” use of THC. My adult child 23 ended up in this facility 2x. As a Social worker myself at first I was frantic, reading the reviews and 1st visit seeing that it was CO-ED. I was even skeptical about the medication protocol used for stabilizing. If you have a loved one here know that they are SAFE!!! The prescribing physician meets with and listens to the patient. The social worker listens , helps make realistic goals but not always what the patient wants to hear. My adult child made complaints , cursed out staff and family. It was so scary because I know first hand from working in a skilled nursing facility that staff are “human” and abuse by staff does and can happen. LISTEN carefully to any complaint a patient here gives. Most likely they are there against their will “at first” because they were a risk to themselves or others. It’s NOT home and the staff are there every day with people that are at their worst! My sweet child was a terror and although some of her complaints were valid concerns they were exaggerated, twisted and misunderstood. Believe me some staff can have an attitude, some staff follow protocol while others may use discretionary judgement. If you have a concern talk to a supervisor ! Ask questions! Learn about the diagnosis and most like you will come to realize the lack of COPING SKILLS is what drives the majority of negative reviews. We are fortunate enough that we could afford a more luxurious facility and have access to many other options but due to a wait list and positive feed back about this facility from highly respectable professional in the field we chose to leave our adult child here until ready. The 3 day notice in place to prevent anyone from being institutionalized unnecessarily was constantly being used by my child every time they didn’t get their way. I will say that my child was able to advocate for themselves in refusing one of the medications and knowing that in doing so they got themselves sanctioned due to threats (idle )of harming themselves or others. However after several days I finally had my child back. Without facility like this and staff that choose to work with patients suffering mental illness where would they go? Just know your loved one is safe!!! The non luxury amenities and institutional rules are made to keep everyone safe. It’s not a retreat or vacation I am Grateful and thankful to this facility in helping get my child back! Special thank you to Wendy (the supervisor) All of the front desk receptionists that are so nice. Asunta the SW and Dr. Jessica Sweet and the BHT’s that had to deal with my child 🤦🏼‍♀️ God Bless

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We’re so thankful for your feedback! We work hard to ensure that we are promoting a safe place where healing can begin.
