WORST PLACE EVER! I was there for a month and a half in 2022, and I was supposed to go home after 2 weeks. The nurses would talk crap about us at the desk constantly, Deb was horrible! She would complain about us being too loud when we were dead silent and scream at us. She would take away our notebooks if she deemed we were too loud and constantly would belittle us. She actively and purposely referred to those of us who went by another name as our birth name. She took my art journal away and would rip my loose pages from it and throw them away. Some of those were important school papers that were lost.Barstad was the worst psychologist I have ever met! He does not care about your mental health and openly belittles you in front of others. I was sharing my experience with bullying and an undocumented rib injury that caused lasting effects and didn't heal right. He continuously interrupted me to invalidate my experience, saying things like "that wasn't really a rib injury," "your partner is not good for you. He doesn't really care." He even diagnosed me with Bipolar disorder because he asked me if I had mood swings, and I said "yeah I'm a teenager. I'm gonna have mood swings it's normal." He did not do any further testing, and after I left and spoke to a real psychologist, she was confused why it was in my record, seeing as I don't show any symptoms of Bipolar. Not to mention, I have autism.Staff refused to use my preferred pronouns and barstad often told me "you're partner probably won't care about you after you come back from here don't get your hopes up" and "he has likely forgotten about you". They wanted to send me to a group home for my "negative thinking patterns" and told me if I didn't "shape up," they would keep me there longer.I was forced to strip down when I entered the room in order to change into the scrubs that were provided. The lady who was getting me in the system made me strip in front of her. Not only that, but she had even put her hands on me as I stood there bare. She "checked" me like you would in a federal prison. This was humiliating.Later, after asking some of the other patients there, I learned that nobody else experienced this except the one other LGBTQ person who was there.

This place has got to be a joke. I get sent here and the first thing I'm introduced to is a safety blanket, no sheets, and a prison-looking room. Couldn't have a sweatshirt or shorts because I was a personal safety risk, according to them. At first I refused to do the changing process because they wanted me to do it in front of them (I have a s/a history), so they threatened to force me and I eventually just went along with it. 2 days later I was chair restrained because I got angry. Ridiculous.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

This place is terrible. I went about five years ago and everyday I wish I pursued legal action against them. When I first arrived, the nurse stripped me down making me feel very uncomfortable while a male was in the room as well, right behind the curtain. Then, I was brought to what was literally like a jail cell. I was terrified and bawling for hours. The staff that came in, looked at me very emotional-less and did not try to help me whatsoever. Eventually, a nurse named Kathryn came and she was my saving Grace. I know she’s not there anymore, but she helped me so much. She was also type 1 diabetic as well so she really advocated for me and my health. The next day, I was brought to the otherside which was better than the jail, but the nurse Deb, was TERRIBLE. She would talk about us to other staff, and bully us. She would make fun of us repeatedly. The psychiatrist would prescribe random meds without even listening to you. He would ask a list of yes or no questions then prescribe random meds without knowing the real problem. The medication nurse was terrible and had no clue what she was doing. They made me take off my insulin pump, so she was in charge of my insulin. My blood sugar went up to the 200’s for awhile at one point, and she made me go to the er for it (if you’re diabetic, you know how ridiculous that is). The paramedics came to pick me up and in my room I started crying to them saying how I feel very unsafe there. The paramedics looked at me with sympathy and gave me a hug. At the ER, the doctor asked me why I was there when my blood sugar wasn’t even that high and asked if I’d ever been in DKA before, I said yes, so she said “so you know you’re definitely not then.” And I said “I’m definitely not, they made me come here.” She looked at me with sympathy and said she didn’t understand why they sent me here, gave me one unit of insulin, and sent me back. You could tell she was very annoyed about. I can tell everyone outside that hospital knows what a joke that place is. I developed more ptsd from the hospital rather than getting any help and feeling better. This place needs to be shut down.

Hi there! Never do inpatient here if you're going voluntarily! Barstad, one of the only psychologists at this hospital, interrupted me during one on one time to tell me that my r*pe wasn't actually r*pe. He never let me explain the situation other than that it happened. He also belittled my problems that I shared during group time, implying that there were "too many" and that I needed to focus on the "important" one. I felt very unsafe in the place that I went to for healing, all of the staff were visibly mad at me for requesting to leave despite them knowing what happened. I have NEVER had an experience like this at any other place, even the inpatient hospitals that were more like jail. Never go willingly because you're bound to get mistreated.

Like a living nightmare, in the jail like side, I was shut in my room multiple times as another patient threatened and degraded me,staff allowed him to go to the general unit where there's more to do and groups, he threatened me with hopes my child's head (my cat)being hit by a truck as I lost her a few months earlier to dog attack, the staff favored him, a week after being discharged w chronic mental illnesses , my last remaining child(my emotional support dog...her head was hit by a truck!!!! On Christmas eve , which I'm sure has added more trauma to my diagnosis, nurses were awful, lazy, most my discharge notes were untrue and I didn't get the care or support at all necessary, only Kyle the security guard and Dr Barstad a psychologist left positive impressions on my visit, and of course a handful of other great patients, better support amongst each other than thru the Sanford staff, staff use cameras too much and assume instead of talking with me as an individual. Please stay far away from here
