About Southern New Hampshire Medical Center

The Southern New Hampshire Medical Center is a community hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire. While they don’t provide substance use disorder treatment at this location, they can refer you to the network’s Center for Recovery Management for a full continuum of care. Nashua has multiple public transportation options, so reaching the clinic is no problem.

Medicaid, Medicare and many major insurance plans are accepted here. Their Charitable Care program provides financial assistance for those who qualify.

Preparing You for Long Term Recovery

The Center for Recovery Management offers short term chronic disease management as part of its addiction treatment program. This approach recognizes substance abuse as a chronic disease and shows you how to best manage it as well as other co-occurring chronic disorders you may have.

Usually, this approach focuses heavily on preparing you for long term recovery. You don’t simply “get better” when dealing with SUD, but when looked at as a chronic disease you’ll learn strategies to cope with symptoms and prevent relapse. In essence, it’s laying the path for the ongoing work you’ll be doing.

Addressing Hepatitis C

A chronic disease that the Center for Recovery Management specifically targets is Hepatitis C, which is a common affliction among people who use drugs. The clinic provides screenings and treatment for Hep C as part of substance use treatment.

So the delivery nurses are amazing no question. Postpartum nurses are not. Will not effectively communicate issues with your newborn, then wait to move you in the middle of the night. Then they will try to guilt you for it and say they re sorry you feel that way. If your child needed additional testing they send you to a remote site but there s a good chance you will have to go to the ER because the remote sites have expired equipment.Overall would not go back.Update! Was there a billing issue? You bet! Did you call to correct it? Of course. Did they still bill you incorrectly anyway after a couple hours on the phone? Well of course.

I'm only giving 5 stars for the woman at the security desk (I think her name was Alexa?) who helped me out of a very difficult situation that the hospital should have been able to handle no problem (Not anymore apparently). She went above and beyond helping with something that really shouldn't be her job. Give her a raise.

Wouldn t recommend for any surgical procedure as they clearly have a lack of anesthesiologists. First, i was told in 2023 that I couldn t deliver my daughter here by an anesthesiologist because I was high risk although I know plenty of others who were also high risk who delivered here. Then I was told this week they do not do surgeries on children under 2 anymore (because of anesthesiologists ). Mind you I was told this the night BEFORE my daughter was supposed to have a procedure. No one even thought to call me to tell me her surgery had been cancelled. Only reason I found out is because I called them! Unprofessional and poor communication.

Accepted Insurance

Southern New Hampshire Medical Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs provide continuing care for clients in an advanced phase of recovery, including those who have completed detox and intensive inpatient treatment. These clients typically have already engaged in many hours of addiction counseling and recovery education. Drug rehab aftercare supports clients in maintaining their sobriety at home, in the workplace, and in the community. Case managers and care teams advise clients on the resources they may need to promote their sustained sobriety.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
When you receive 24-hour clinical care in New Hampshire, you benefit from several advantages. You receive 24/7 medical care and support. You also detox in a setting that keeps you away from access to addictive substances. Additionally, doctors prescribed medications that reduce or eliminate withdrawal symptoms. Medical staff also provide other treatment to improve your physical and mental health.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Treatment provided at drug rehab in New Hampshire prepares individuals to handle life stressors without using substances. Participants get the tools and support they need to maintain lifelong recovery.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Horrible hospital in every aspect! Security guards are super rude and equally disrespectful. Billing department has numerous issues , aggressive and very unnecessary collection practices, failing to bill insurance companies properly, including consistently failing to provide itemized bills upon request. Doctors talk about each other in front of anyone! A surgeon while in the hospital was blabbing about a “Dr. Baker“ and his many “surgical screw ups” on a cell phone with the public listening to full conversations (recorded). I was present for a RN that had reeked of fresh ALCOHOL ON HER BREATH WHILE TREATING PATIENTS!!!!!! Numerous safety and code violations around the hospital including several that are actual Misdemeanors . JCAHO should be ashamed for accreditation for SNHH. I will be launching a web site/data base shortly to show evidence and provide the public with the avenues to make complaints to the proper authorities w/o favoritism or prejudice. The CEO Colin McHugh of Amherst , must be removed from his position, he has failed this community and his staff. Let’s let Colin , Susan and Michael know change is coming…..soon. Update 6/7/25 Hmmmm…nobody from patient relations is responding to this review…wonder why…?

My gastroenterologist actually BROUGHT ME HOME. That's right, my doctor that did my procedure, Dr. W. Brought me home because after the anesthesia I didn't have a solid ride home.

Hello Brandon. Thank you for sharing this amazing moment! We’re so grateful to have providers who care so deeply for their patients, not just in the procedure room, but in every way that matters. Wishing you a smooth recovery, and thank you again for your kind words!

I spent 4 days and 3 nights back in April 2024. I highly suggest getting the pancakes for breakfast and the turkey dinner for lunch and dinner. Oh, the medical side of the experience was quite decent. I had a north facing room and the view was acceptable. This hospital is way better than Nashoba Valley Medical Center was. The snack shop makes delicious burgers and grilled cheeses. I'd give a 5th star but their wine and drink menu left something to be desired. Actually, it was more of a lack of a drink menu that was the problem.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Hello. Thank you so much for sharing your detailed feedback. We're glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and especially appreciated the food and medical care. We wish you continued healing.

I was transported against my will, held briefly, charged $1800 for no treatment, and released within an hour. Southern New Hampshire Medical Center exploited my altered mental state and billed insurance fraudulently. I wouldn’t trust them to care for a dog

Worst emergency room in the state. Waited 2 1/2 just to be triaged. Then another 5 hours and still didn’t get the test my PCP sent me in for. Maybe saw 2 patients get called in out of the full waiting room that was there with distressing injuries and illnesses. Only time a nurse actually showed up was an active seizure happening while someone was waiting. It’s also very dirty here- trash and tissues laying all over the floors (in peak flu season). Someone came out only once of the full day I spent in the waiting room, to wipe a door handle… aside from the nice lady at check-in, this hospital is NOT a place for emergencies. Waiting room and bathrooms are disgusting, staff tells you nothing on wait times even after several hours of sitting there in an emergency needing care, and this place is extremely over capacity. I will never come here again- it was a horrific experience.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:

Wait time in this ER are trouble thank god I didn’t have a blood clot I would have been dead. Waiting to see the doctor for discharge papers and maybe 10 to 15 mins and I would be gone. I am also in the medical field and I know it can get crazy but come on I’m sitting in pain with no medication help out with this wait

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Hello Sheri. Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. We recognize that wait times in an emergency services setting are highly variable, and we are very sorry you did not have a positive experience. If you have concerns related to care or safety that you would like to discuss further, please reach out to our Patient Relations Department at 603-577-2196 so that we may better understand and respond to your individual experience.
