About Southern New Hampshire Medical Center

The Southern New Hampshire Medical Center is a community hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire. While they don’t provide substance use disorder treatment at this location, they can refer you to the network’s Center for Recovery Management for a full continuum of care. Nashua has multiple public transportation options, so reaching the clinic is no problem.

Medicaid, Medicare and many major insurance plans are accepted here. Their Charitable Care program provides financial assistance for those who qualify.

Preparing You for Long Term Recovery

The Center for Recovery Management offers short term chronic disease management as part of its addiction treatment program. This approach recognizes substance abuse as a chronic disease and shows you how to best manage it as well as other co-occurring chronic disorders you may have.

Usually, this approach focuses heavily on preparing you for long term recovery. You don’t simply “get better” when dealing with SUD, but when looked at as a chronic disease you’ll learn strategies to cope with symptoms and prevent relapse. In essence, it’s laying the path for the ongoing work you’ll be doing.

Addressing Hepatitis C

A chronic disease that the Center for Recovery Management specifically targets is Hepatitis C, which is a common affliction among people who use drugs. The clinic provides screenings and treatment for Hep C as part of substance use treatment.

I see all the negative reviews, and I'm astonished. Having been both a patient and a family visitor at SHNMC more than once in the past 43 years, I have nothing but good things to say about the ED, about surgery and the PACU, and about the wards. My wife and I have always been treated professionally, with kindness and honest concern, by all around us. I just brought her home after several days in hospital for spinal surgery. Nobody did a song and dance routine in the corridors for us 😆 but otherwise it was as good a hospital stay as I can remember. The only negative comment I can register is about the food, which seems to be designed to be unpalatable. (Once upon a time, SNHMC had an award-winning kitchen.) As for long waits in the ED waiting room, I don't like to wait any more than the next person, but that's the way life is in every ED I've known. The whole point of triage is to ensure that the people most in need of urgent care are taken first. Your bump on the noggin probably doesn't trump the multiple compound fractures or the heart attack of that other person. There's another good hospital in town, but my choice always goes to SNHMC.

I honestly don’t know what went so miserably wrong for my 11 week old granddaughter today at the ER. We arrived at 2:45 and my daughter left at 7:45. I’m not really convinced it should’ve taken five hours to triage, rule out Covid and other viruses take a urine sample and diagnose a UTI which by the way in a child that young is very serious and should’ve been looked at during the triage probably. She was put on antibiotics ultimately But those could’ve been started much sooner. I’m still at a loss to explain how you can have a nursing mother who pumps and feeds from bottle Sit there and become engorged for five hours without pumping And unable to feed her infant because she had run out of bottles because it took so long. How completely inefficient and inconsiderate. A UTI is a very common outcome for an infant child with a fever and no other symptoms. The pediatrician had told us that, but they sent us to the ER for more expert, expedited and thorough care which we absolutely felt she did not receive. It was shameful really. To top it off, my daughter left there without extremely clear instructions and reassurance that everything was going to be all right. She left discombobulated and confused.

Accepted Insurance

Southern New Hampshire Medical Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs provide continuing care for clients in an advanced phase of recovery, including those who have completed detox and intensive inpatient treatment. These clients typically have already engaged in many hours of addiction counseling and recovery education. Drug rehab aftercare supports clients in maintaining their sobriety at home, in the workplace, and in the community. Case managers and care teams advise clients on the resources they may need to promote their sustained sobriety.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

When you receive 24-hour clinical care in New Hampshire, you benefit from several advantages. You receive 24/7 medical care and support. You also detox in a setting that keeps you away from access to addictive substances. Additionally, doctors prescribed medications that reduce or eliminate withdrawal symptoms. Medical staff also provide other treatment to improve your physical and mental health.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Treatment provided at drug rehab in New Hampshire prepares individuals to handle life stressors without using substances. Participants get the tools and support they need to maintain lifelong recovery.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

You might want to test your nurses in the ER. A blonde haired nurse was talking outside my room that she still might be intoxicated from the night before. My nurse Emily was talking about how she goes to a pot dispenser in mass. Can’t believe you allow this for your nurses!

Never ever ever in my life been treated so horribly. Went into the ER, obviously waited hours for any sort of contact with staff. They first wanted bloodwork which is extremely hard to get on me, I told the first lady who tried i had deep small veins that usually an IV team is called. She responds "im not calling an IV team" like okay, she stabbed and phished around for a half hr before giving up. Once brought back a couple nurses tried stabbing me a few more times. Told me no one was there trained on a sonogram machine. Then it gets better this jerk dr comes in asking how i want to treat my abcesses. Like i should have a plan of action ready. He lifts my shirt and starts really pressing on these painful areas WITH MY DOOR OPEN!! i could literally see security gaurds at the desk infront of my door. He decides he wants to drain them lidocaines em doesnt even wait 2 mins starts lancing into one it was anything but numb. You have to wait 5-10 mins for it to fully work. It was excruciating. Mind you im bawling my eyes out still havent recieved any antibiotics. I asked for a script of oral ones and to go home. This dr left me with the one he opened and didnt even finish dressing it, i walked oht with blood covering my shirt and a wick hanging out of my stomach. He refused to give me antibiotics cuz i said i wouldnt let him touch me. He was condescending the entire time. Im not sure how far to take this but yall should seriouslt be ashamed. Do better.

This Emergency Room Is a Damn Joke 😡 I’ve NEVER experienced anything this ridiculous. I waited 5 HOURS—FIVE—for what? To get blood drawn multiple times in different spots like I was on a hospital obstacle course? To have my blood pressure checked over and over in the damn waiting room like that makes up for anything? And STILL no room. No explanation. No urgency. Just complete disorganization and disrespect for people’s time and health. This place is a disaster. First time here and you better believe it’s the LAST. Don’t waste your time or your patience.

I was brought to SNHMC on May 15 by ambulance and was in the ICU for 11 days. I was unconscious then and would be for five days. I had pneumonia following a seizure. My husband, who sat with me for all 5 of those days, said that the care of the nurses and doctor was extraordinary. When I woke up - confused and disoriented - the staff was amazing. I could have been left alone that first night but I wasn't. Nurses came in regularly to check on me and see if I had questions or concerns. I believe I received incredible care from the kindest staff I have ever met. I simply can't say enough good things about the way my husband and I were treated. While I hope never to need their services again, SNHMC was absolutely amazing and I would gladly seek service there again if I should need it.

Response from the owner

I was brought to Southern by ambulance around 1am on June 1st. The entire ER staff was wonderful. After several hours in the ER, I was admitted to a room. This is when things started to go downhill. Whole several members of the staff were wonderful, others were far from it. Above all was a nurse named Mike. I had him my first day there. He was very unorganized and took forever to do his job. He and an LNA were talking about how nice it was outside and he couldn’t wait to get out and enjoy the weather. Then he commented that the only problem was that he had to come back tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that, etc. I told him he absolutely did not. That there were many jobs you could do you did not like, but being a nurse was not one of them. He told me he was only there for the insurance. On my last day there I had him again. He needed to get me out of bed for discharge. I had just had spine surgery so I wanted him to use a gait belt as a precaution. He told me he had never used a gait belt and didn’t feel there was a need. I have one leg that is paralyzed from surgery. I was not getting up without using one. He told me he would go try and find one. Once he did, he brought it to my room but did not know how to use it or understand the need for it. I do not understand how an RN does not know how to use a gait belt to safely transport a patient out of bed. He did not call for anyone to help. I did not feel safe. He made my experience at Southern a very bad one.

Response from the owner
Hello Lisa. Thank you for reaching out. We take your feedback seriously and would like to learn more about this situation. We are happy to hear that your ER visit and experience with most of the staff was excellent, but are sorry to hear that you were unhappy with one of the nursing staff members. If you could please reach out to our patient liaison at 603-577-2196, we can learn more and address the issue. Thank you for taking the time to help us improve care for all our patients.
