This is a boy and girl campus. I think that says enough. Even But before that, my daughter was abused multiple times on and off campus. So many things wrong with this place. Only a few things that are right. I'm devastated at what my daughter has become during the 6.5 months she was there. Respite for my family is actually what it offered. The security and inability to Taylor the program for individuals that don't fit into the box is a struggle here. To be fair, I don't think anyone would be able to help my daughter right now, but I was hoping for less hurt to occur. I feel like if I had listened to my daughter and my own heart, and taken her out before Christmas, it would have prevented damage and pain. The state needs to review this program. It's not a safe place.

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers intensive treatment to those with moderate to severe addictions while allowing them to return home. It is often an alternative to inpatient hospitalization and a "step-down" option from residential programs. PHP treatment is tailored to your needs and lasts an average of 90 days. Weekly sessions are up to 8 hours for 5 days a week and can include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy services. The cost of PHP treatment varies but is often fully or partially covered by providers.

Treatments

In Utah, dual-diagnosis addiction treatment programs have the expertise to help individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions. These specialized programs are available in an intensive outpatient or residential inpatient setting, depending on the severity of the patient's mental health. Treatment incorporates therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), 12-Step recovery, skills training, medication management, and aftercare support.

When treating substance use disorder and a mental health condition, the best approach is to treat both conditions at the same time. Known as dual diagnosis treatment, this kind of specialized care provides you with 24/7 access to medical and mental health professionals, group therapy in order to provide a supportive peer group, and family therapy which helps to improve relationships with loved ones.

Clinical Services

Therapists may use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in Utah to address substance use and mental health disorders. The main focus is to change thinking patterns, which leads to behavioral change. Subtypes of CBT include exposure therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and acceptance commitment therapy.

Family therapists work with all members of the family unit to understand the impact that addiction has had on the family collectively and individually. Together they develop strategies to help their loved one recover. The therapist facilitates open discussions between family members to help build resilience and improve interactions. Ultimately, this supports their loved one's path to sobriety.

Recreational therapy helps you in your addiction recovery program by improving your overall well being. Activities can include sports, music, and nature excursions that give you positive experiences, reduce your cravings, and offer the opportunity to reduce your stress. These aid in your addiction recovery.

Trauma therapy addresses the psychological impact of traumatic events. Together with a therapist, you identify the impact that trauma has had on your life and the factors that trigger emotional and physical responses. You develop better coping mechanisms to rebuild a sense of safety and trust in your life.

My dad pulled me after a couple of months and it saved my life. My friend graduated from the program, went home and took her life. I could go into so much more detail about the trauma I experienced here but I feel I’ve spent years begging to be heard

I graduated from sunrise in 2022. They saved my life. Honestly I wouldn’t be here today without them. Was it really hard? Of course it was I mean they were having us change our habits of life threatening behaviors. And of course it wasn’t perfect I went from a daily life at home laying in my bed all day to being in Utah trying to earn the privilege of being able to lay in bed all day. And by the time I got that privilege though i didn’t even want it because sunrise showed me that living life is way better than decaying in bed. There are times in treatment that are traumatizing but that’s with any treatment facility I mean you dealing with people who have mental illness and addictions, no dip some crap is gonna be traumatizing but also life can be traumatic but it’s when you move past that trauma or bad days that you’re able to find some peace. And finally being able to say I wanna wake up another day has changed my life for the better. Now I will admit sunrise isn’t perfect if I could make some changes I would but also no where is perfect what matters is how in the end your able to keep on living. How I like to describe my treatment experience is that I come to treatment with mental gunshot and stab wounds and sunrise helped me take out the bullets and stitch up the wounds then they told me how to care for them and let me off into the world but sometimes those stitches I would pull them out or they would get infected but luckily there’s always something that can make them healed. I still have the scars from my wounds and sometimes I’m ashamed or embarrassed of them but then sometimes I remember I’m not the only one in the world who has scar's and there’s plenty of people who accept those scars and still love me for me. I definitely think though that treatment was one of the hardest things I have had to go through but if I was asked to change anything from my process to graduation I wouldn’t because it made me the person I am today and I like this version of me a lot more.

The property is beautiful, housing for clients sufficiently spacious and new, the admission team and admission process impressed me. The team was very thorough. Most or all staff have worked there 2-5 years per the director, suggesting to me this is a good workplace for staff, good retention with no vacant positions, and solid experience with the client base and milieu. Unlike some facilities that tout DBT, all the staff here are actually certified in DBT using a Duke University curriculum, again per the director. I will write another review later after we have had some experience with the setting. New post: After six weeks, I can say that this is the best RT we have experienced. This is the first RT where we as parents have received support. Other RTs have parent support groups. Sunrise also offers weekly DBT sessions for Parents. We have a hefty parent manual with DBT exercises. Each week we learn and practice a new DBT skill that our kid is learning. This is critical to improving each kids' family system. They co create a meticulous treatment plan, create contingency management plans tailored to our teen's needs, and let us attend a monthly clinical team meeting for our teen. Communication between team members is impressive, and they reply promptly to our questions and concerns.

Sunrise was a game changer for us. My granddaughter graduated from there in November 2023 after a 1 year stay. She had been in and out of short term facilities for years with suicide attempts and self harm behaviors. She had given up at that point and felt that she was beyond help but willing to try anything. She’s been free of self harm for more than a year now with no relapse and she’s truly building a life worth living. She’s become an advocate for mental health in our community and often asked to speak about her recovery experience. Without the help of Sunrise I feel certain we would have lost her. The complete and comprehensive immersion into DBT skills gave her the tools she need to build self confidence, manage her emotions and make good decisions. The programs wholistic approach of DBT training, mentoring and confidence building outdoor activities and required parent involvement should be a model for all mental health programs. I was also attracted to their excellent outcome measurements which I’ve never seen in any other program. I will add that my granddaughter wanted the help and worked very hard. It wasn’t easy and at times very difficult but she was committed and if your child wants to get better and you as parent are willing to work along side them, Sunrise is the best choice for a long term stay.

Yesterday our child graduated from Sunrise's therapeutic program. They arrived at Sunrise on October 30th, 2023. Sunrise is a minimum security, residential treatment facility. For some background, our child identifies as non-binary, gay and goes by they/them pronouns. Our child was self-harming with suicidal ideations, plagued by crippling anxiety, severely depressed, emotionally dysregulated, and quickly descending into the Hell of Borderline Personality Disorder. They had multiple psychiatric hospital stays, multiple IOP sessions, had nearly ceased going to school, even with IEPs and a 504, and had withdrawn into their room and themselves. There were multiple therapeutic professionals working with our family, yet everything continued to decline, for our child and our family as a whole. We needed something more, something that would be all-encompassing and completely immersive. After hundreds of hours of exhaustive research, we realized Sunrise was the place for our child and our family. At Sunrise, your child will be fully immersed in Dialectal Behavioral Therapy. At first it seems they're getting individual and group therapy sessions, but as time passes, you realize the entire environment, the mileu, is continually on-going therapy. In addition to your child's treatment, Sunrise will work with you as well. There's remote, weekly family therapy, and there are classes and support groups for parents. Additionally, there are quarterly Family Events, where parents will spend two full days participating in various group therapies and experiential activities. Many of these sessions and activities will be as a family. This progressively rebuilds the trust and the familial bond. Sunrise is also a boarding school. The school is located off campus and offers a variety of necessary and elective classes. This keeps your child progressing in their education, or in our case, helped them to complete their education. Sunrise is not a quick-fix, short-term program. Teaching the children the skills they need, and teaching them how to live those skills everyday takes time. The average stay at Sunrise is 10-12 months. Yes, it is expensive, but we realized that's what it would take to save our child's life. The world is not perfect, we as people are not perfect; therefore, no residential treatment center will be perfect, but no one at Sunrise ever touched our child in anger or otherwise, Not Ever. Sunrise helps the children to develop new behaviors and control their behaviors by positive reinforcement and rewards. When your child first arrives at Sunrise, the staff focuses primarily on life-saving behaviors. Afterward, they'll address the quality of life behaviors. Sunrise is about changing and teaching control of behaviors. They do not change your child's core personality. They are accepting of all genders. They will not change your child's sexuality. Many children with behavioral problems also suffer with identity problems, some of these characteristics can and have changed. If your child is at their core gay or straight or identifies as a boy or girl, Sunrise will not and does not try to change that. Part of a child's happiness and well-being is based in who they are, not the behaviors in which they engage or display. Our child's time at Sunrise saved their life. Make no mistake, your child will do the hardest work they've ever done in their short life, and you will too. The parents' education and work is equally important as your child's. Throughout their whole life, you will be a constant connection and influence. Be the best person you can be too. Sunrise is a compass for life. It can guide you and your child, but the actual journey is truly yours to take. If you're ready for your family to heal, if you're ready for your child to thrive, not just survive, Sunrise can help. Do your own research, and find the right fit for your whole family. Your family deserves a better life, and Sunrise can help.

It's difficult to describe just how much of a positive change Sunrise has made in my daughter's life and in mine. The facilities are clean, comfortable, and safe. They are very selective about their staff, who are friendly, communicative, competent, steady, and reliable. In the end, they felt like family, and they clearly loved my kid and cared about her progress. There were frequent check-ins with providers to manage treatment and medications. The quarterly family events were well-organized and provided much-needed emotional support and connection. There is an emphasis on nature and the outdoors, and it is a truly beautiful setting in southern Utah. The school is great. The food is great. Perhaps the greatest testimony, however, is the love my daughter has for her mentors, teachers, and therapist. She built lasting relationships with some of the other kids, and they continue to support each other post treatment. My child has become an advocate for mental health, and Sunrise played an important part in that. Thank you, Sunrise, for everything you did for her and for me!

I am now 23 years old, and I still vividly remember the horrific “treatment” I was subjected to at Sunrise nearly a decade ago. I was enrolled in this program because I was depressed and suicidal. I exited this program depressed, suicidal, having an extreme anxiety and panic disorder, with notable antisocial tendencies which were NOT present prior to my time in the program, and as an excellent actor. I had learned that the only way to prevent myself from being sent back was to play house as the perfect, well behaved daughter until I was a legal adult. I love my parents, but I never trusted them again after Sunrise. I still don’t. The only thing Sunrise RTC gave me was a lifetime of post-traumatic stress, fear, and deep-rooted distrust for those around me (along with several chronic physical injuries due to being forced into CrossFit at 15.) There are times even now when I have such detailed, gut-wrenching nightmares that my husband shakes me awake because I’ve been crying loudly in my sleep. You will never get “your child” back from Sunrise, just a traumatized shell.
