Our experience was very positive. My 14 year old daughter arrived to Sandstone after many other attempts at recovery. While there were quite a few instances of her causing the same issues as she would at home, the staff was very understanding, patient, and communicative. Nurses and other staff would call us often with updates on everything, which was amazing. They could always answer questions I had, and helped us feel like our daughter was genuinely being cared for. The only 2 things I’d have a complaint about, is the multi-family sessions and the family therapist we were assigned. The multi-family sessions are there for family members to gather for 2 hours every week to talk about things the kids are working on, and share experiences as their family. The sessions are somewhat required, and I’m a very introverted person, so I did not find them helpful at all. They were more of an inconvenience, because I process things on my own, and most of the time one or two family members will end up talking the whole time. Also, the family therapist we were assigned to was great as a person, nice guy, but seemed like he had absolutely no therapy experience. Would often just sit and say “hmm” during our sessions, and I often had to explain things it seemed like he just couldn’t articulate. I would have preferred a lot more feedback and involvement in general, especially if family dynamics were an issue upon admission. Despite these things, our daughter returned home about a week ago and so far has been so much happier and better at regulating her emotions. I’m very happy with our experience and I hope the changes are lasting.

We had a great experience with Sandstone Care Teen Center. Weekly parent education meetings, family therapy, and calls home keep parents involved and all of my communication was answered same day. My kid really liked the staff, his therapists, and the nurses. In particular, I loved that this center is eyes on. With the exception of the bathrooms (and even those they don't allow kids to enter together), that means your kid will never be out of sight of a staff member, including at night. I found the care to be thoughtful and thorough, and my child is doing great since coming back home. The kids hike weekly, work with horses biweekly, and they have excursions and movie nights for community and social skill building. They also use the DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) skills they learn there to cope with situations that arise. To provide a balanced view--I would have liked to have seen more emphasis on nutrition and chores. There were also a very few staff and therapists that I thought could have handled issues better, but that is going to happen in any treatment center.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Clients entering an inpatient rehab typically require more intensive treatment than those in outpatient care. Clients often start inpatient treatment immediately after completing a detox program. Upon admission, they engage in extensive psychotherapy, receive recovery-focused life skills training, and participate in evidence-based complementary therapies, such as meditation, massage, acupuncture, and/or animal, creative arts, recreational, and experiential therapy.

Treatments

With residential addiction treatment, you live in a rehab facility while receiving mental health services. Rehabs offer 24/7 care provided by clinical and mental health staff. A typical inpatient program lasts 28-30 days, but some last for several months. Standard mental health services include group and individual counseling, with addiction and relapse prevention education. Amenities, like recreational offerings, vary by facility.

Colorado offers dual-diagnosis addiction treatment programs that encompass various levels of care to meet your individual needs, including medical detox, outpatient, inpatient, and partial hospitalization programs for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. These dual-diagnosis rehab programs incorporate evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to successfully address substance use disorders and co-occurring diagnoses.

Programs

Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.

Clinical Services

The main principle of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in Colorado is that substance use disorders are based on faulty thinking and behavior patterns. The goal of this treatment is to help the individual learn better ways of coping with challenges, which will lead to changes in thinking and behavior.

Dialectical behavior therapy is skills based and present oriented. You'll be asked to keep a diary of emotions and related behaviors and practice the skills you've been learning between sessions. The focus of skills development is on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

During family therapy sessions, family members in Colorado work with therapists to understand addiction as a disease that has affected the entire family. This approach fosters empathy and reduces blame on any one member. Promoting this collective effort helps to support the recovery process.

Group therapy in Colorado offers you a platform to share your stories about drug addiction and co occurring mental health conditions. You'll receive encouragement and empathy from peers who understand your journey, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Men and women in Colorado have access to customized individual therapy sessions for drug and alcohol addiction treatment. These sessions explore your life experiences and patterns of substance abuse. Your therapist helps you recognize harmful behaviors and thoughts that empower you to make positive changes for lasting recovery.

During trauma therapy, you explore the impact that a traumatic event has had on your life. Your therapist can help you develop strategies to manage the emotional and physical symptoms while improving emotional regulation. This improves your overall quality of life.

Therapists who employ motivational interview techniques seek to draw out the client's ideas about change and allow them to draw their own conclusions about the need for change. This method is often effective for clients who feel unsure about their ability to change or the need for change.

We learned of Sandstone when our child became extremely depressed and found them because they work only with teens. When we checked into the facility, it was very new and clean. We felt comfortable knowing she would be in great hands with the staff. We met with the nurse, the psychiatrist, and a couple individuals at intake. Their intake process was professional and thorough. We have exchanged emails with the tutor and therapist on staff. We left knowing she’s im caring, good hands, with professionals that are equipped to help her at this difficult moment in life. We are trusting the journey.

Response from the owner
Hey Melanie,

Thank you for sharing your family’s experience. We know how difficult it can be to seek help during such a vulnerable time, and we’re honored that you trusted Sandstone with your daughter’s care. It’s wonderful to hear that you felt supported by our intake team, medical staff, tutor, and therapist, and that the environment helped provide reassurance during this transition. We’re committed to walking alongside families throughout the entire journey. Thank you again for taking the time to leave us a review!
