About Boyd Andrew Community Services – Elkhorn Treatment Center

Located in Boulder, Montana, the Elkhorn Treatment Center is a secure residential behavioral treatment center with a capacity of 55 beds. The services here act as an alternative program for women who have been criminally charged and are facing incarceration.

Instead of traditional jail time, women in the custody of the Montana Department of Corrections move through the Elkhorn Treatment Center to receive the intervention and therapeutic support they need. To participate in the program, you need a referral and must have a methamphetamine or stimulant disorder. They also address struggles with co occurring mental health disorders.

General medical and dental care services are also provided here.

Second Chance Recovery

Referrals for treatment here come through the state’s Department of Corrections. This program primarily works with women who have just been sentenced for their crimes, have violated their parole or probation, have violated their conditional release, or are currently serving time in one of the state’s women’s prisons.

Everyone referred to the program goes through screenings and assessments to determine an appropriate recovery plan and whether these services here can help them. All recovery services are rooted in proven practices and include substance abuse group therapy, relapse prevention, victim impact services, and supervised physical activities.

They also offer services here that will improve your life, such as parenting classes, sessions covering anger management and violent behaviors, and skills development to help you find gainful employment once you complete the program and re-enter society.

Highly Structured Recovery

Because this is an alternative to traditional incarceration, you’ll find that the services, and the program as a whole, are very well structured and what many may consider strict. This is a secure treatment facility, and residents here won’t engage with the public to maintain safety and ensure that women focus on their recovery.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Clients enrolled in outpatient rehab typically reside in their own homes and many continue to work and/or attend school while receiving addiction treatment. The frequency and intensity of outpatient treatment varies based upon the clients' evolving needs. Many programs offer a full continuum of outpatient care, including partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), sober living/halfway housing, and standard outpatient services. The most common treatment modalities are psychotherapy, life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients participating in a rehab aftercare program have typically already completed detox and/or intensive inpatient treatment and are reintegrating into their home, workplace, and community. Rehab aftercare services generally include outpatient counseling, recovery education, holistic care, and medication assisted treatment (MAT). Many clients also continue to receive recovery support after being discharged from outpatient treatment. Case managers and care teams help clients access the services they need at each phase of the recovery journey.
12-step icon12-Step
Addiction recovery based on 12 step program models emphasize emotional, psychological, and spiritual growth. The 12 step recovery strategy depends on intensive peer support, including regular attendance at group meetings, which are anonymous, free, open to the public, and available 365 days per year in most communities. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring from a self-selected peer sponsor as they work through the 12 steps of recovery, which relate to self-awareness, forgiveness, accountability, and acceptance.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
A successful drug intervention in Montana requires careful collaboration between family members and intervention services. An intervention specialist helps the individual understand how their substance abuse is affecting themselves and others and understand how treatment can help. This professional may be certified as an interventionist or possess other mental health qualifications. They walk everyone through the intervention step by step, then provide follow-up services for treatment.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

A comprehensive drug rehab in Montana treats the entire person. Treatment methods address all the underlying causes of addiction and give the individual the tools they need to live a healthy, drug-free life.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

During cognitive behavioral therapy in Montana, patients learn to be their own therapists. They develop coping skills so they can change their thinking and behavior in day to day life. This helps them overcome mental and substance use disorders.

Your rehab program in Montana may include dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). This method helps you understand your feelings, accept them, and learn to manage them. With the skills you develop, you'll be able to make positive changes. Sessions include both individual and group settings.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Family therapy offers a platform for open and honest dialogue about the challenges that addiction has created within the family unit. Using guided sessions, your therapist helps family members develop healthy communication skills and address unresolved issues. By working together, families can help support their loved one's sobriety.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Unfortunately, if you are going here it's not by choice....I am her to speak on the aftermath of this program. I have a life today that has far exceeded my goals in early recovery. This program and some very amazing people within it, helped me grow and change in ways I am so grateful for. This was the wake up call I very desperately needed. When I was sentenced to elkhorn people told me you will not be the same person after that program "it changes you" (they didn't mean that in a good way) little did I know they were right!! I am a different person then when I went into this program. I have an amazing life; I have my kids back, I am buying a home, I have a college degree, a career, 5 years sober, and a life I've built that I am not willing to lose!! At Elkhorn I made the decision to take charge of my life, I decided to stop surviving and start living!! If you are reading this you probably have a family member here or maybe a stay here is possibly in the cards for you. If you lean into this program and take everything you can out of it, look at it as an opportunity instead of a consequence, you too can have the life you dream about (only far better).

The best thing that could have ever happen to me was being sent to elkhorn. I learned to much from them. Because I went in with an open mind and wanting to change and be sober and healthy …it worked . I have had my struggles since I have been out but there was not one time that I ever gave thought to go using . Now that I have been out I see why things were done the way they are done at ETC. and with anything in life if you want something bad enough you can have it . If you want to be sober you will take the tools with you and use them . My life is so amazing now and yes it all cause I went to ETC with an open mind and a mindset of wanting to change and live a better life then I ever thought I could . Thank you etc I am so thankful of all of you !

When I was there years ago it was so cold and the heaters wouldn't work. But I did meet some pretty cool people there. And the very invasive strip searches that I've never heard of in ANY other facility... wow if that's not a great way to start off a extremely already stressful and rough stretch you'll be doing there it dont seem legal. At the end the panel where they have outside speakers... they showed really graphic photos of people who had passed without warning just passed the puctures around. The food was from the prison and one of the meals with "beef" had a piece of cow tounge that looked spiky and not edible. You got paid a small amount for being there like allowance to buy stuff if you needed. There were dear that would go outside yoy could see from the window. The best part was cr with Ms Joanie. Don't let them think they are taking good care of your mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, grandmothers, whatever a woman can be called. It is sheer hell. I have been out of this program for over ten years and the trauma I endured there makes it worse!!!!! If you want your loved ones to get help and Riverside treatment center is still open advocate to get them there. It is still DOC but it is healthier, happier, faster, better, and the staff there actually cares. The so called staff at Elkhorn don't even like what they see and that is straight from their own mouths. The "community" they try and create there is horrendous. When I was there it was a 30 bed facility now it is 50???? Anything to get more state funding I suppose. Nothing but trauma comes from this facility. The so called nice caring nurse doesn't care for nothing. Food sucks. The only only thing good that came from this facility is leaving it!!!! Advocate for Riverside and if that place is closed then just pray your female counterparts and write them there as much as you can and take as many calls from them as they can. Listen to them and be there for them because it is hell. Even visitation is hell as you have to strip down completely naked and be demeaned and feel like an animal and then your welcome back to the center after the visit over is a UA. Such a wonderful joy to see family but to be humiliated as you do it is horrible. God bless anyone who goes here
