The Carter Clinic, P.A. works with several private insurance providers, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) evolve with clients' changing needs and are often well-suited for clients exiting inpatient rehab and those at an increased relapse risk. These programs typically involve between nine and 20 hours of treatment weekly, with the intensity and frequency of care decreasing as clients stabilize. Most intensive outpatient rehabs integrate a variety of treatment modalities to maintain a high level of individualized care. Services generally include counseling, recovery education, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

Rehab aftercare programs offer a complete continuum of care for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery and are predicated on the idea that addiction disease is a chronic condition prone to relapse and warranting continuing care. Clients collaborate with their care team and case manager to access the specific rehab aftercare services they need to promote their sustained sobriety. Peer coaching, relapse prevention services, career counseling, and 12 step program induction are common in these programs.

Intervention services can provide customized interventions tailored to the needs of the individual and family. An intervention specialist can design and conduct a drug intervention in North Carolina that encourages the individual to enter treatment in a non-coercive manner. The specialist will meet with the family to plan the intervention, then provide expert insights to guide the process and appropriate follow-up care.

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

There are many types of drug rehab in North Carolina. To receive treatment for addiction, you can choose from many inpatient and outpatient programs. Often, participants start with detox and work through a full continuum of care that continues with ongoing support for long-term recovery.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

When you participate in experiential therapy in North Carolina, you'll harness creative expression to release negative emotions and experience positive ones. This happens through hands on interventions such as music, art, animal care, culinary arts, and drama.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

You usually develop a strong bond with your therapist during individual therapy sessions. This helps you explore the underlying causes of your substance use in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. Therapists help you develop effective coping strategies you can use in the community and improve your self awareness so you understand your addiction triggers.

Trauma therapy helps you reclaim your life after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Therapists help to process these memories, which promotes emotional healing and reduces anxiety in social situations. This improves your overall well being and increases your self confidence.

This office has been one of the most frustrating healthcare experiences I have ever had. On approximately three separate occasions, my appointments have been disrupted because my psychiatrist was more than 25–30 minutes late to scheduled Zoom appointments. What is especially frustrating is that no one from the office ever reached out beforehand to let me know she would be running late. Instead, I would sit in the Zoom waiting room for 30 minutes or more, wondering what was going on, only to eventually leave because I could not continue waiting indefinitely. After the fact, I would then be informed that the appointment needed to be rescheduled, often pushing me out another week or longer. These appointments were simply follow-up medication management visits that would have taken no more than 10–15 minutes. There is no reason patients should have to wait weeks for care because of repeated scheduling and communication failures. To make matters worse, I have attempted to speak with a manager regarding these ongoing concerns and have never received a return call or any meaningful follow-up. The lack of communication, accountability, and respect for patients’ time is unacceptable. If patients were consistently 30 minutes late or repeatedly missed appointments, there would undoubtedly be consequences. Unfortunately, this office does not seem to hold itself to the same standard. Patients deserve better communication, better scheduling practices, and basic respect for their time. Experiences like this are exactly why so many people struggle to access quality mental health care. Mental health patients often rely on timely appointments and consistent follow-up, and offices that repeatedly fail to communicate or respect patients’ time only contribute to the growing need for better mental health care providers. People seeking help deserve to feel supported and valued, not ignored and repeatedly pushed aside. Based on my experience, I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT recommend this office.

I don’t write one-star reviews because I know they have real consequences for businesses, and I’m sad to write this one, but it’s out of genuine care for others. What happened to my family member shouldn’t happen to anyone else. He has been a patient at Carter Clinic for mental health care. Since January, the clinic has repeatedly failed to call in his maintenance medication refills. Each time he called, staff said the prescription had been sent. Each time, the pharmacy confirmed nothing had arrived. By early May, he had been out of medication for two weeks, and the clinic knew it. On May 5 he called again, was placed on hold for 12 minutes, hung up, called back, and was told to leave a callback number. The clinic assured him the mail order pharmacy accepted his insurance. A letter from CVS Caremark the next week confirmed it did not. What was most disappointing was not the original mistake. It was that once the problem was clear, the clinic did not try to solve it. They did not offer to send an emergency prescription to a pharmacy that could fill it the same day. They did not tell him which pharmacies actually accept his insurance. They promised callbacks that never came. We spent hours researching emergency refill laws ourselves, work that should have been familiar territory for clinic staff. He was without his medication for three weeks. Symptoms returned. Needless to say, he is finding a new provider through a referral from his therapist. Anyone can drop the ball once. This is a four-month pattern of basic failures, made worse by a refusal to step up and help when the consequences became real. My genuine hope in writing this is that Carter Clinic sees it and makes changes internally, so no other patient experiences care like this.

No medication refill for 14 days and counting. Tried to contact them 5 times via online portal to get help. No response. Finally found out they never called in the prescription even though initially they said they did. Carter Clinic is at fault. There is a term for this – it’s called patient abuse. If I could give them a lower rating I would.

I was referred there from my primary care provider to talk out some things, medical issues, financial issues, you know, stuff like cancer. And the fact I have no money, so I call them up. I do all their paperwork online, I missed one form so I went in early, I got that done. And they tell me this has to be an in person interview for the first I get there and they want to put me in a room with a zoom, because the doctor didn't bother to come in. And then they got upset with me when I turned around and told him that wasn't going to happen, I could've stayed at home, I have no transportation. It takes me almost an hour each way to get there, only to find out that the doctor was too lazy to show app, do not go to this. Place run.
