About Hendricks House Group – Vineland Campus

Hendricks House Group – Vineland Campus, located in Vineland, New Jersey, is a halfway house for adult men facing drug and alcohol addiction. They treat a variety of addictions and provide additional mental health support for those with a dual diagnosis.

The typical length of stay at the Vineland Campus is between four and six months. You’ll find that the homey residential setting creates an immersive environment and makes it easy to fully engage in recovery away from daily triggers. The residential wing has space for 40 men. The building also consists of a cozy living room, large dining room, a kitchen and several rooms dedicated to recovery meetings. They also have a home gym and rec room for you to use during your free time.

Your treatment program includes several individual, group and family therapy sessions every week, as well as psychoeducation and case management services. You’ll learn about responsible behavior patterns and practice skills that help you maintain employment after treatment. The team also works with you to design a custom discharge plan that helps you stay sober and supported once your stay with Hendricks House is over.

Something special about the Vineland Campus is how much like family it feels. Residents take turns helping out in the kitchen to prepare meals for the group and learn valuable cooking skills. Each night, you’ll eat dinner at a long family-style table with other residents, the staff and the counselors. During dinner, everyone gets the chance to talk about the day’s events, talk about key lessons they’re working through, and sometimes even talk to alumni members about shared experiences.

I was here for a month and the staff is nice, the food is good and it's a great place if you want to stay clean however for a halfway house setting they treat you like you are in a 3.5 or 3.7 level of care. I disagree that you cannot watch sports there, that you can't have a cell phone, and you only can watch the news Monday through Thursday 6am-830am and 5pm-6pm nothing else. Also out of about 90 people there about only 10 people had jobs. The reason I left was because of those above reasons however if you want to stay clean I recommend this place. I just disagree with the rules they have. No other halfway house in NJ has rules like that.

Where do I begin! I did a short time rehab at John Brooks.I wanted a longer treatment plan because I want to be sober for the rest of my life. I have the desire and will to beat my addiction. I guess John Brooks waited to long to place place me. They suggest Hendricks house it would be perfect. I said they deal with trauma and individual counseling that s what I need. They assured me yes . I was so excited to work thrue my pain and get support. I got there what a scary disappointment. The monitors well acted like Co s I think that the terms for jail security. It s based on a TC program. We sat at a table in the morning 3 hours before the so called iop stared. There were over 80 guys and 15 women. The guys made it a point to say hi to us and talk. The women were told if you answer your on contract. The guys nothing. Anyway women were made to feel less then. The iop counsler quit while I was there so treatment was watching tv and seating at a table for over 7 hours. No treatment at all. My last days consisted of being bullied. I felt sick on a Thursday. 5 of us went to urgent care my doctor gave me 3 days. Of bed rest he also prescribed temaflu as a precaution. Since Hendricks house will not let you leave to medication. Long story short . Came back was told to sit with all the other women 1 row back. That was Friday so I was sick Thursday and Friday. Stared to feel better on Saturday. I was called into the office told you are quarantine. I said what I stay with 3 other girls in my room. They said stay in your room if your hungry or thirsty ask I client. I said you said I m quarantined, they said if your hungry or live your room you are going on contract. I was having a nervous breakdown ask to call my family I wanted to leave I was experiencing past trauma with no cousins I begged to call my family they denied me to call. So 2 days later I insisted I call my family I feel imprisoned I want to leave now. Finally I was allowed to use the phone on speaker my husband said I was going to send a well check out for you. I stared. To explain what they did and don t you know the person hung up the phone. He called them back said he is reporting them and I finally got out of that prison. Tomorrow I m calling my Medicaid and informing them the scam they are pulling. That do not give any treatment at all.

Sorry your 2 weeks at the facility was not a match to your expectations. I see you noted you got sick with the flu, received medical treatment, was quarantined and then you left. HH can be considered structured, but medical protocols are followed closely to ensure everyone's health and safety. Early recovery is a confusing time and HH level of structure is not always a match for each person. Many people come to a halfway house and expect the same higher level of care they were receiving and find it very difficult to transition to "low intensity treatment" and leave disappointed. You sound very determined to live a full life clean and sober and we wish you well. We always recommend continuation of community meetings and finding a sponsor.

Alright I waited like 2 months think about what I wanted to say here. I spent 6 months in HH and it definitely changed me for the better. If you're really down and out and even homeless as I was that I would strongly recommend this place. If you have a good support system out there I strongly do not recommend this please because it is tough. It's like volunteering for jail with IOP. But the upside is I left their completely different as I came in. Literally a whole new attitude on life. I was lucky enough to get a job there but from what I hear right now there aren't many jobs at all so as long as I waited to get a job I'm actually grateful that I did get one. The recovering addicts that work there, really are the ones that keep that place together. They pay them next to nothing and I know that because I've seen their job ads on indeed paying minimum wage to drive a van with 13 recovering addicts in it. There were monitors that would show up drunk every day swerving all over, but they were more concerned about finding out whether or not we brought the wrong food to IOP or brought coffee to work. Great counselors and shout out to Augie and Monica for knowing how to get through to me. The sad part is the top is ran by people that are not in recovery, which is fine with me for their business end. But, they micromanage everything and they really only know how to punish people and take away. This is not a halfway house it's more like a 10% house. You have to make it what you can. But I can't give it a bad rating because it worked for me. I hope this helps someone. Just like everything with life this place has its good things and bad and it will be what you make it.

Glad to hear you were changed due to your time in Hendricks House. We are so grateful to all of our staff, those in Recovery and those who are called to work in the recovery field and are not in recovery. Hendricks House has helped so many over the 30+ years of service and we are so glad to hear of your continued success. It's a treatment facility, so there are a lot of rules, but that prepares everyone for life on life's terms. Glad you graduated and are doing well.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in New Jersey is the process of addressing the complex issues involved with addiction. Challenges are identified and addressed through individual and group counseling. Participants learn how to manage these issues without the use of substances.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Good evening, I am writing on behalf of the narcotics anonymous meetings that happens on Sundays and Monday nights at 700 east Landis Vineland. My name is Lizzie and I am the group secretary, I have three years of clean time but have been in this meeting for over ten years. I am writing this to whom it may concern in regards to the attendance of the men from the Hendricks house. The men have always come to this meeting and prove to be an asset of our growing community. They are always behaved, participate and it has always produced long term results for them. I have multiple men in my homegroup who were once participants of HH. Their presence is missed and the lively hood of this meeting depends on each individual that comes in and outside of HH. I am kindly asking that the men be allowed to participate as it is a crucial piece to their recovery. I would be more than happy to speak to whomever to make this happen. Thank you so much for your time in this matter.

I spent six months at the facility with an extension and felt I made significant personal progress. However, I was never voted into a sober living arrangement and was discharged without housing assistance for an Oxford house. I have been waiting a week for my belongings to be mailed to my address, which I find very unprofessional. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to take ownership of their recovery in this facility.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Discharge planning begins at the beginning of treatment. <br>Sometimes over a clients stay in treatment, those original plans change and new options have to be investigated in a short timeframe. Sorry you were unable to get in to a sober living, as that is our preference for discharges. The sober living places are self governed and they decide who they will accept and who they will not accept. I'm glad you graduated and have learned skills and made progress in your recovery. Glad you are safe and still in recovery.

"I am deeply disappointed with the treatment my husband and our family have received from Hendricks House, Galloway house A run by Sandra Costa. I urge you to steer clear of this place and these people who call themselves a clinical team because had I known what my loved one endured here id never would have agreed for him to go here. Caged animals at the shelter are treated better. The facility’s actions are infringing on his rights and causing emotional harm to us. We were initially informed about a supportive, rehabilitative environment, but the reality has been anything but that. Instead of encouraging family connections—a crucial part of successful reintegration—this halfway house has unjustly taken away his visitation rights and phone calls without valid reasons. They put the entire house on black out because 1 person got caught with a vape. (Not my husband) This isolation is affecting not only his mental well-being but also hurting our entire family, especially our children who are struggling with the lack of contact with their father. Sandra Costa tells DCPP one thing and never follow through. She said there are 7 -8 "counselors" on duty watching visits which is a lie Communication and transparency from the staff have also been severely lacking. I've had well checks done with the police because I've not heard from him for weeks on end. Reading what other families have dealt with about loved ones being thrown out without their belongings is very disturbing to me. Requests for information or explanations regarding these decisions are often ignored or dismissed, as I've left messages to try and come to some sort of solution which is making an already difficult process even harder to bear. Families deserve better treatment, and the facility should prioritize the welfare and rights of its residents and their loved ones. I urge Hendricks House] to reevaluate its policies and practices, respect the rights of residents, and take a more compassionate approach to family involvement and communication. Families are a crucial support system, and breaking these ties does more harm than good for everyone involved."

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We value and encourage family involvement as directed by the clients. There are times clients want to work on themselves and refrain from family and friends to ensure they're learning skills independently. Hendricks House works with families, support systems, the judicial system, DCP&P, but as directed by the client. We encourage clients to evaluate people, places and things and determine independently what best suits them at this point in their recovery journey. Sometimes the counselor has to take on the role of intermediary to ensure safe communications, but the ultimate goal for each client is long lasting recovery and a safe treatment environment.

This is for all the negative reviews Towards the Hendricks house. Those people saying "don't send anyone u care about to that facility. These people are only whining bc when they were there the staff probably didn't let them do whatever they wanted to do, those people had no idea that in order to change you MUST CHANGE!!!!!!!! And as far as them putting people out for whatever reason, I'm pretty sure none of them were children, and last time I checked adults are more than capable of finding their way home. Hendricks House gave me my life back.... You will NEVER get out of u'r current situation with the same thinking that got u there....you are where you are right this very moment from every choice you have made. If you don't like where you are right now then there is only ONE thing to do..... MAKE BETTER CHOICES... Listen to the little voice in u'r head, he/she is NEVER WRONG

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you SO much! Our Alumni are so close to our hearts and we exist to help those recover from the disease of addiction. We hope that those who leave treatment early find their way back to treatment before its too late. Hendricks House ALWAYS makes sure clients have a place to go. We have clients contact family and friends. If that does not work out, we offer to take them to the local shelter. There are times clients don't believe that is where they'd like to go and leave. We are SO proud that you're in recovery and thank you for your voice and support!

The administration director is very unprofessional and is completely out her league. Her husband runs around the facility like her owns it yet he is only a maintenance man. They force the clients to sign off rights so they can record all audio conversation. her and her husband then go home watch the clients on TV. They form personal opinions about the clients and then take in vantage of the information they have. The last thing the care about is recovery I will never recommend this halfway house to anyone. It should be closed down and sued for recording personal conversations.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
As most facilities, the HHG provides services in residential facilities and have surveillance in common areas to ensure client health and safety. Clients are aware of their rights when they are admitted and throughout their stay in treatment.

I had the pleasure of spending six months at this facility in 2004. The treatment was tough but necessary, the house built a strong foundation that has last many years. I am beyond grateful for what the staff and house did for me. Being an alumni I sometimes get the opportunity to come back to share and encourage the clients who are currently going through the house, I hope that they realize what a gift that they have been given.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Robert, thank you so much for your positive review. We are so very grateful for the service you have provided to our current clients. Looking forward to seeing you again and hearing you share your story to give them hope.

It's a shame how they put people out without a place to go.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Hendricks House always offers clients a ride to the local shelter if family is not willing or able to pick them up. It is upsetting when a client is discharged before their estimated completion date. Clients must adhere to organizational policies that are in place to ensure client health and safety. When situations arise that necessitate discharges, clients are encouraged to call their families and support groups first to see if that is an appropriate placement. If that is not possible, clients are referred to a shelter or other living situations. Our treatment team believes in recovery and takes administrative discharges very seriously and use them when client community health and safety is at risk.

Do not send love ones here they would discharge without investigating. The person was not court appointed and wanted help. He was discharge and it affected him mentally. He didn't know how to get home and they did not care. The police officer assisted him ..docsaf

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
During physical altercations, clients are discharged due to community safety concerns, but they are always allowed to make phone calls to family and friends. When family and friends are unable to assist with the discharge, we always recommend the local shelter. The police always are helpful and will either escort to the shelter or assist in any way they can. Each discharged person is allowed to call family and friends for assistance and no one is ever discharged without those options. Each facility is under video surveillance and it is reviewed as part of every altercation and subsequent discharge. If family or friends receive a call from a client, they can always speak with clinical or operational staff that are with the client at discharge to review concerns and recommendations.
