About HEROES Clinic (Houston Emergency Opioid Engagement System)
For folks who need a hand dealing with chemical dependency, they might consider the Houston Emergency Opioid Engagement System, abbreviated as HEROES. They’re based in Houston, Texas. It’s a flagship program of the UT Health Houston Center for Behavioral Emergency and Addiction Research. Qualifying clients receive free services and only pay for prescriptions.
The program is funded by grants provided from the Texas Health and Human Services, SAMHSA, and NIH NIDA. To be eligible for the HEROES program, you must be over 18 years old and have overdosed on opioids or have been diagnosed with opioid use disorder. Currently only English speaking staff are available.
A street outreach program, HEROES responds to those who’ve called 911 regarding an overdose or are being treated in a partnered emergency room for opioid use. Patients are given rapid induction with buprenorphine for immediate stabilization.
Treatments Provided by HEROES
Your initial contact with the program will be a screening by a physician associated. Clients then discuss medication assisted treatment options with a physician. If the physician deems it as a necessity, they’re prescribed medication during this appointment.
Counseling and therapy is an important recovery technique in addition to medications. The program provides individual private counseling for each client. These sessions are an opportunity to review the treatment plan and discuss any issues the client is having.
Peer Assistance to Guide the Way
Peer facilitated support groups allow clients to communicate and establish relationships with others who are traveling a similar path. Groups participate in discussion, encouragement, and support for fellow peers in the group. Educational support groups are led by counselors.
Each client is assigned a peer who coaches the client through recovery. The peer helps the client see their accomplishments as they reach each milestone.

Other Forms of Payment
Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.
