About Legacy Outdoor Adventures

The program blends traditional, evidence-based substance use treatment modalities with exciting outdoor activities like rafting and skiing. The outdoor activities increase engagement and help create better recovery outcomes.

Something interesting about the women’s and men’s programs is the weekly adventure trip. Clients leave the comfort of the hospital to participate in outdoor adventures and then return to the treatment center. This helps clients learn about and accept transition and change.

All clients work with a primary therapist, meeting two times per week. You may also work with other therapists for specific services, such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Depending on your needs, you may participate in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), attachment theory/emotion-focused therapy (EFT), motivational interviewing (MI), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Other types of therapy used at the center include narrative therapy and internal family systems (IFS). IFS is interesting in that it deals with the family inside of you. You’ll identify the different parts of your personality based on your upbringing. Some of these parts may conflict with your authentic self. IFS helps you heal wounds and bring the different parts of your personality into balance so you can be your true self.

The outdoor experiential therapy includes onsite horses for equine therapy, hiking, and meditation. You’ll immerse yourself in nature while outside the traditional hospital setting.

One former client remarked that the program was top-notch and the team was knowledgeable and very devoted. Another client said the program exceeded his expectations. This facility is accredited by The Joint Commission and the Association for Experiential Education.

Best decision I ever made. Being out in nature and having to overcome fears that you wouldnt experience in a normal rehab setting taught me a ton and gave me a different perspective on life & recovery. I went to 2 different places for treatment before Legacy and the people that work at Legacy care so much more. It was the hardest thing I’ve had to do, it definitely wasn’t easy. I wanted to leave everyday for a month but sticking through it benefited me so much and I grew to love all the badass stuff you get to do there. I have the most sobriety now since trying to get sober, most likely wouldn’t be the case if I didn’t go there

Choosing to enroll in a program like this is a significant financial and emotional commitment, and I hope my experience can help guide others facing the same decision. I waited to write this review until several months after our son John completed his time at Legacy, since the real measure of a treatment center is how a child fares after discharge. There aren’t enough stars to rate Legacy, nor enough words to express how profoundly their treatment benefited John. Before Legacy, John was struggling—depressed, anxious, and lacking direction after high school graduation. He was caught up in computer and phone addiction, using marijuana, and eventually experiencing suicidal thoughts. Despite years in traditional therapy with caring counselors, nothing seemed to help. With the help of a consulting firm, we discovered Legacy. At 18, John had to make the decision himself. Initially, he resisted and was upset by the idea, convinced he could recover at home. Chris in admissions and Derek supported us, helping us communicate with John. During a particularly difficult period, we persuaded him to try Legacy. The wilderness portion was tough for him as he doesn't enjoy being outdoors, but the staff’s kindness convinced him to stay for the full three months. We visited John during the family weekend workshop two thirds of the way through his treatment, and saw remarkable progress—he was more patient, optimistic, and confident, discovering joy in small things and learning he could overcome fears. The staff was compassionate and informative, and the group activities, (run by Mike, Troy and Justin), went much deeper than traditional therapy. Brody’s caring attitude, along with his dog Nemo, made a lasting impact, and Amber, John’s counselor, worked tirelessly to equip us all with the tools for John’s lasting success. John returned home just before Thanksgiving. While we still take things one day at a time, we are amazed at his transformation. He’s regained his spark—earning praise at his new job, attending school with perfect attendance, working out daily, and independently managing his appointments. We’re beyond grateful to see his joyful self again. I hope our story offers encouragement to anyone considering Legacy for their loved one.

I felt extremely comfortable working under Mike Hinkle, Kyle, Bek, and Jake as directors. Jake was wicked smart and poetic, challenged people, Beks a fantastic listnener and lax human who I wish I got to work with more. Kyle is very in touch with reality and intelligent, great with boundaries. Mike Hinkle is one of the best humans at connection and compassion I’ve witnessed. Brody is a great guide too, especially at building relationships, true role model human. Ted as well, that guy has a ton of experience and really enjoyed my week with him and Bek. I had some very difficult challenges before I made the tough decision to leave back to Arizona and felt loved and supported by all of them. I’ll certainly miss interacting with these stand out people.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

When treating substance use disorder and a mental health condition, the best approach is to treat both conditions at the same time. Known as dual diagnosis treatment, this kind of specialized care provides you with 24/7 access to medical and mental health professionals, group therapy in order to provide a supportive peer group, and family therapy which helps to improve relationships with loved ones.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Family therapists work with all members of the family unit to understand the impact that addiction has had on the family collectively and individually. Together they develop strategies to help their loved one recover. The therapist facilitates open discussions between family members to help build resilience and improve interactions. Ultimately, this supports their loved one's path to sobriety.

equine-therapy iconEquine Therapy

The goal of experiential therapy is to help you work through trauma or intense feelings by interacting with your environment and others. In a safe environment, you are able to resolve conflicts or challenges from the past. Techniques include adventure courses, equine therapy, martial arts, and music.

Legacy Outdoor Adventure markets itself as a place that helps people heal, but if you’re coming for mental health services, this is absolutely not the place. The program may be decent for addiction-only treatment, but anything beyond that feels far outside their actual competence. Utah must have extremely weak regulations for who can call themselves a “therapist,” because the “therapy” here was some of the worst I’ve ever experienced. The therapists were unprofessional, dismissive, and completely unequipped to handle real mental-health struggles. Instead of feeling supported, I felt misunderstood, minimized, and in worse shape than when I arrived. I left early because the “care” was not just unhelpful — it was harmful. If I were in any position to report their conduct, I genuinely would. No one seeking real mental health treatment should have to go through what I experienced here. If you need genuine therapy, trauma support, or mental health stabilization, look somewhere else. This program is simply not built for it, no matter how they advertise themselves.
