About Maine Medical Center – Outpatient

Maine Medical Center – Outpatient is located in Portland, Maine. They provide outpatient behavioral health services to address and treat co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. They are close to several medical facilities, restaurants and accessible to I-295.

Nearby, you can visit Deering Oaks Park, the Western Promenade and the Fore River. You can also go to the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine, the Maine Historical Society, Victoria Mansion and the Merrill Auditorium for cultural landmarks.

Dedicated Addiction Medicine Department

They have a dedicated department to address addiction medication and provide outpatient care for substance use treatment. They will address your immediate needs if you require detoxification for alcohol or opioids and other substances.

MAT Assisted Treatment for Stabilization

If you qualify, they may provide you with medication assisted treatment (MAT) to help manage withdrawals during your stabilization process and keep cravings at bay. They also treat those experiencing addictions to stimulants.

Crisis support is offered 24/7. Before your discharge, they will work with you to create a plan that meets your immediate needs for counseling, therapy and medication management.

Onsite Screening for Sexually Transmitted Diseases

I like that they also offer screenings for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. They also treat Hepatitis C and other disorders and will provide educational care and support groups to those seeking peer support.

They provide aftercare support to help you connect with additional treatment options and community support groups. Referrals may include access to education programs, employment services and housing, for those experiencing instability.

They also offer care dedicated to seniors and their age-specific challenges that they may be experiencing. They commit to providing you with ongoing support for the duration of your addiction and into your commitment to sobriety. They offer a partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) program as a step-down option following your stabilization.

I have never sought treatment at the center. However, the one-star reviews about the lack of empathy and the failure of the center to reply to those reviews are consistent with my experience with a cancer-care nurse practitioner. Especially in this period in which a nurse practitioner largely assumes the role of a doctor, I (perhaps mistakenly) believe that these “professionals” are obliged to provide care when called upon. Minimally, I would expect that a cancer supportive care practitioner would support and show empathy toward a cancer patient. I had many questions and concerns about my chronic lymphatic leukemia when I was diagnosed. I also thought that I would pass away from the disease within a few years. I did not know what to expect, and I was having great difficulty locating resources. This practitioner and I were classmates and on cordial terms at school. A fellow classmate repeatedly reached out to the practitioner to contact me to no avail. I personally left a few voicemails and never received any acknowledgement. It is disappointing that someone who chooses supporting cancer patients as a career cannot be bothered to even take a few minutes to call or e-mail even to point a cancer patient in the right direction or express sympathy about a disease that never will go away. I never was and probably never will be a patient of the center only because I do not plan to live in the area but hope that they would have hired people who demonstrate much more caring than this person to whom they entrust patient treatment. This person has done the opposite of “do no harm” by creating repeated angst via turning this blind eye and deaf ear.

We recently stayed at Maine Med for the birth of our baby boy. The nurses and doctors were all incredible and took such good care of us all. Very informative, helpful, and made us feel more comfortable going home as new parents. Highly recommend!

Accepted Insurance

Maine Medical Center – Outpatient works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Those rude receptionists wouldn't let me see my dad when they said they would help him and they didn't. Nurses weren't hygienic, they didn't wear gloves or wash hands constantly. Doctors were always rushed, over spoke and my dad felt like he was treated like incompetent and ... Read More

My dad recently underwent knee surgery and I have to say the amount of care and compassion my dad my mom and myself received was incredible. From the second we walked through the doors to the second we left the next day. Every single person that works for the hospital that we interacted with was amazing. Everyone was kind, compassionate, caring and welcoming. I wish I could name everyone. It certainly showed that you have people that love what they do. It was well worth the drive. Thank you for taking such great care of my dad. ❤️

Okay maine med, let's have a talk. I came in 2 months ago on a stretcher from a car accident with a severe leg injury and open wound. I was sent out of the hospital with no wrap or bandage on the wound. No antibiotics and was told to walk out. 2 months later and my wound is still not healing. Infected and causing me great pain. The doctor that cleaned out my wound 4 hours after I arrived at your hospital dropped his tweezers on the floor before he started digging around in my leg. No, that's not a joke. Yes I said. Did you drop those tweezers on the floor. He just said yes. I am beyond dumbfounded with how horrible I was treated at this hospital.

Why does management only write back to positive reviews? Do a search for bad reviews and read on...While it appears a few are happy with Maine Medical Center, too many patients are not, myself included. I have observed a uniformity in incompetent doctors and nurses, with problems ranging from misdiagnosis to fraudulent billing, to attitudes so rude and openly hostile, even a Walmart would not tolerate. It's hard to find a practice that has not been taken over by Maine Medical Partners, the worst of the worst. I would challenge whoever writes back to positive reviews to post the number for the hospital ombudsman's office and details on how to file a formal complaint against the hospital with the state of Maine.

My husband has been in hospitals for 4 nights. And so have I. I asked if there was a family locker room or somewhere a wife could take a shower and was told no. 😣. Horrible care. My cousin has been there 2 months. She went in at 125 lbs and is now 90 lbs. Nutritionist admitted she was getting 800 calories less a day than she should be. She has a feeding tube and a trache. She passed the swallow test and her first meal they gave her moldy English muffins
