About Pembroke Hospital

Pembroke Hospital is a 120 mental health and co-soccurring substance abuse center for teens and adults in Pembroke, Massachusetts. They specialize in inpatient and partial hospitalization treatment, with a telehealth option available for the latter. If transportation is an issue for you, they can make arrangements so you can receive treatment. This location accepts most forms of insurance.

Collaborating with Social Workers

You’ll work with a diverse team of healthcare professionals at this clinic, but you’ll also connect with social workers and case managers. These people will focus on setting you up for success post treatment while you focus on recovery.

It’s the job of social workers and case managers to ensure you’re meeting your daily needs and can successfully live alone. They also help with care coordination with all of your providers so you don’t miss appointments. Their support reinforces and continues the work started in treatment.

Facilitating Family Healing

The adult partial hospitalization program (PHP) features family meetings. These sessions are not only a chance for you to connect with family and share what you’ve learned, but it’s also an opportunity for your loved ones to heal themselves. Strengthening family relationships is shown to reduce the risk of relapse. (The PHP can be used as a step down from inpatient care.)

Joanne’s trauma program changed my perspective on things, taught me so much, and gave me the tools to be a better version of myself. I got to a point in my life where I was no longer myself. After spending 7 days in group with Joanne, that night sitting with my wife and just going about our normal nightly routine she started crying. They were tears of happiness, she told me before I had entered the partial hospitalization program she didn’t recognize me anymore and that it was like the person she fell in love with was back. I am so grateful for this program, it saved me from myself and from destroying relationships with my loved ones. I truly felt at my lowest before entering the program and now I feel like I’m ready to take back my life, I AM A NUFF! If you or a loved one or even someone you don’t love are in need of help, giving this program a shot is worth it, I got more out of the 15 day program than in 10 years of therapy. Thank you so much to the staff at Pembroke hospital in the partial hospitalization program and a very big thank you to Joanne! You all mean so much to me and I’m forever grateful!

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) are offered for patients as part of the treatment continuum. These programs offer a safe, structured environment while enabling the patient to return home at night and maintain important family and community relationships. Partial hospitalization may be appropriate for patients making the transition from inpatient to outpatient treatment or as a program alternative for patients who do not present any danger to themselves or others but need a structured treatment plan and environment.

inpatient iconInpatient

The adult inpatient psychiatric services provide short-term admission for intensive diagnostic evaluation and treatment to stabilize individuals in crisis. While hospitalized, patients will work with a multi-disciplinary team headed by a psychiatrist who will design and implement an individualized treatment plan, including 24-hour nursing care, psychopharmacological interventions and a full range of psychosocial interventions. Treatment may involve psychological and behavioral components, medication management, family education and participation in group therapy.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

As part of the continuum of care at Arbour Health System, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are offered for adult patients whose psychiatric and/or substance dependence symptoms are impeding their ability to function interpersonally and professionally, but do not require the intensity of partial hospitalization level of care.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs offer customized, wraparound support for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery. Many clients enroll in drug rehab immediately after completing intensive inpatient or residential care. Services encompass outpatient treatment but often extend long beyond the completion of a formal recovery program and typically include a variety of medical, mental health, and social service programs. Peer coaching, relapse prevention, 12 step program induction, and related services are commonly available.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP), also known as day treatment, allows you to receive rehab-level care while living at home. PHP treatment requires a minimum of 20 hours of treatment each week for an average of 90 days. PHP treatment plans can vary depending on your needs but typically includes relapse prevention, medication management, and evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Most insurance providers fully or partially cover PHP treatment.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Addiction is a highly complex problem, and drug rehab in Massachusetts is often necessary to address it. These programs treat physical, mental, and relational issues that are involved. Treatment empowers individuals to manage these issues without the use of drugs.

Dual Diagnosis services offer a managed continuum of care designed to provide a comprehensive system of treatment and recovery from co-occurring psychiatric and substance disorders. Co-occurring psychiatric and substance disorders are treated simultaneously with a clear recognition that stabilization/arresting of the addiction is the most immediate concern upon the patient’s entering treatment.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image

Military Program

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

During family therapy, the therapist works with every member of the family unit to understand the role they play in their loved one's addiction. By addressing these patterns, family members learn healthier ways to interact with each other and contribute to a more effective recovery journey for the family member who is addicted.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

I stayed at Pembroke Hospital for mental health treatment and medication maintenance. The staff was good company and the food was filling. There’s a strict no-smoking policy, which was tough at first but manageable. The programs can really help if you put in the effort to engage with them.

I was sectioned and admitted into their inpatient facility. Overall a horrible experience and I would not recommend to anyone. The kitchen staff was witnessed being unsanitary on multiple occasions, the unit was disgusting only being cleaned once a day but not deep cleaned. The staff was inattentive, sometimes rude and dismissive, occasionally unprofessional on different scales, and not all the staff follow the same rules so one day you could be allowed to do something and the next get scolded for it. Some staff were nice, and the case worker that was assigned to me was busy and a tad rushed but still listened. The groups were usually good as long as they weren’t run by someone who just played Uno or Jenna the whole time. A lot of the therapy groups I attended were helpful, but to be completely honest they were really the only good part of my stay there. Also visiting hours are only half an hour every day of the week, which is the least amount of time I’ve seen at any hospital. I couldn’t give all the details if I tried, but I will list some the worst examples of my experiences at Pembroke hospital bellow: Someone I knew there was highly allergic to fish only if ingested. One meal they served fish with chicken as an alternative. This patient had the chicken and didn’t order anything served next to the fish. They still had one of the worst allergic reactions I’ve seen. They were immediately pale with eyes sunken in after dinner, violently vomiting and having diarrhea for more than six hours straight until they had nothing left to give. The patient begged the staff to take them to the hospital yet they refused. I’ve never seen someone get so sick so quickly and still be refused a hospital visit. During another meal time I witnessed a patient chocking. The staff came over to give him the Heimlich but performed it incorrectly. The patient was fine but you’d still think they’d be taught these things. There was one patient on the same unit as me that was older and tended to wander. This patient would follow certain people around, corner them occasionally, interrupt groups with rude remarks, insult other patients and loudly praying to them after accusing them of being demons, wandering into other peoples rooms on a multitude of occasions, sleeping on another patients bed at one occasion, and generally just made everyone uncomfortable. They clearly needed a higher level of care, or at least a more attentive from staff because they were making everyone feel uncomfortable and unsafe, wondering if she’d target them next and wander into their rooms which is against the rules but also a violation of patient privacy. Multiple patients as well as myself tried explaining all of this to the staff, mentioning how we felt unsafe because of this patients unpredictably, with a concern that she might trigger the wrong person one day, yet our concerns for this particular patient, and others safety was completely dismissed. One day it happened, the patient wandered into a person of the opposite genders room while they were asleep the same day they arrived on the unit, and the patient went to sit on top of the new one. The new patient instinctively reacted, pushing other off of themselves. The sick patient then tried to get back on top of the new one so again they reacted, and kicked the patient to the ground causing her head to split open. Staff didn’t arrive to de-escalate the situation until everything was already over. The staff finally put the patient on a 1 to 1 which means they were supervised by a staff member 24/7. They moved the patient to a different unit, but also removed their 1 to 1 status. I was then told by another patient on the new unit that the sick patient started up the same behavior there too, now putting 15+ other people and themselves at risk. The patient also informed me that they were targeted by her specifically, the sick patient wandered into their room and started petting their head in their sleep.

The amount of heart in this program is phenomenal. Years and years of experience with ever learning growth has shaped this trauma track to touch everyone who is burdened with the need to walk through those doors. 10/10 would have a breakdown here again. However, that may not happen again with my new tools and new friends. Thank you Joanne and thank you Ally for fostering such a safe space for healing. ❤️‍🩹

I could not say enough positive things about this program from the staff, to the content, the structure, etc. Fred did my intake and was so trauma informed, welcoming, compassionate, and inclusive. I felt safe opening up to him about how I was feeling and why I thought I needed a PHP level of care. Joanne in the Trauma Track is an absolute rockstar and amazing at what she does. This program has been transformative for me and exactly what I needed to reset me back on the right path in my healing journey. I would not ever hesitate to refer my own loved ones to this program knowing that they would be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. I came here in a dark place and I am leaving feeling much lighter and hopeful with a solid plan moving forward. Thank you Joanne and everyone at Pembroke PHP for this experience, I will never forget any of you and the impact you’ve had on my life.

Absolutely atrocious staff tried to hide my rights, treated their transgender patients despicably, refused to accommodate my dietary needs and had an all around gross and unclean facility, they take your phone and access to the outside world under the guise of HIPPA when it’s really just them trying to make sure you don’t have the ability to contact the people you love properly and make sure you don’t know your rights except for the exact lines they feed you and the exact pages they allow you to see of the law
