About Putnam Hospital, part of Nuvance Health

Now part of Nuvance Health, Putnam Hospital provides primary care and behavioral health care for children, teens, and adults in Carmel, New York. Their Behavioral Health Services Department offers inpatient treatment and a partial hospitalization program for clients with mood and anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and related conditions. They accept self pay, private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. They also offer financial assistance.

Their inpatient program is for clients who need immediate stabilization to keep themselves and others safe. This team can provide crisis intervention services like psychiatric evaluations, medication management, recreational therapy, and group therapy to help clients find relief and stability.

Once clients stabilize, they may move into the outpatient program, which allows them to attend treatment during the day and return home at night. The treatment plan they follow will be based on their own needs, but some of the services available here include individual and group counseling, classes related to addiction and recovery, social skills training, and dialectical behavioral therapy. If clients need to take medicine to treat their condition, they’ll work with a psychiatrist to manage those prescriptions. Most clients attend outpatient treatment five days a week for up to six weeks.

While some former clients rank this facility highly, one client was disappointed to find that their doctor left and they were never assigned to another provider. They wished patient loyalty was higher and urged for better communication.

I had to go to the ER recently because of a dog attack. The care that I received from the Physician Assistant was phenomenal. I had over a dozen puncture wounds. Three were deep enough to receive stitches. The Physician Assistant directed me to stay out of work for 10 days. I have a very physical job and am required to lift at least 75lbs. I called the er dept to inquire about paperwork to stay out of work. The person answering the phone rudely told me that they do NOT fill out papers. She then proceeded to ask me why I felt I deserved to stay out of work for ten days. This is a person who had not even looked at my file before asking this. The Physician Assistant who saw me was not on duty and they would only provide me with a note for 4 days. I had to see an orthopedic doctor for follow up and he kept me out of work for over two weeks. Because of that interaction, I will avoid Putnam Hospital if possible.

I became very sick, short of breath and went to Putnam hospital center. They said, you have Covid and pulmonary embolism in both you're lungs.I have a blood clotting disorder, which I've managed for 14 years. They threw me in a room off from everything.I expected that, having COVID. What I didn't expect was to be treated like a pariah because of the COVID. They kept trying to explain to me that my blood clots in my lungs were because of the COVID. I knew that not to be true because I had surface clots for 2 weeks before I even got COVID. They would not listen to me I only had a few nurses that were very kind to me everybody else was awful they wouldn't even come near me they wanted out of that room they made me feel terrible for just being alive.Worst experience ever.Don't go there.

Accepted Insurance

Putnam Hospital, part of Nuvance Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients in rehab aftercare programs receive a customized portfolio of services designed to promote their sustained sobriety. These clients have completed high-level treatment, are typically exiting detox and/or intensive inpatient care and are reintegrating into their home, workplace, and community. Rehab aftercare services address addiction disease as a chronic condition requiring continuing care. Clients typically work with case managers and recovery teams to access necessary resources, such as peer coaching and 12 step program induction support.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Introduced in 1983, motivational interviewing is a method to help clients commit to change. It's based on the philosophy that change is hard, and clients must explore their own options and come to their own conclusions rather than receive warnings or advice from the therapist.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

I have found the Partial Program at Putnam Hospital to have incredibly inferior underqualified counselors. Poor diagnosis and lack of understanding of the issues is the routine. Please do your research and find an experienced qualified counselor. Thinking of this place? Thin ... Read More

One of the worst hospitals in the nation, US NEWS HEALTH. I have been here for care and the staff has a " don't have time for this, can't be bothered attitude". The MRI scanner looks like it needs to be replaced.

Wow - I went to Putnams ER this morning at 9am and the nurse, PA and doctor were so amazing. I wish I could remember their name. So sweet and so detailed and took their time to really take care of me and give me proper treatment. I already feel 10 times better. God bless them and thank you again !

The doctors are terrible; they will kill your loved one. Doctors/staff do not communicate, they hide behind their "specialty" and then feign ignorance when their treatment destroys another area of the body. Pure incompetence, you're better off going to a 3rd world country for medical assistance.

BUYER BEWARE: Especially if you have health insurance. This company bills improperly, which leads to exorbitant co-pays, then will not return phone calls, or offer any resolution. However, they WILL send you to collections. Very frustrating 6 months since I went to them for a strep test in September 2024

Dr Guerrera and ER pulmonologist was the rudest doctor. My mother went in with fluid on her lung stage 3 ovarian cancer. She didn’t want to drain it and literally said “your mom is very sick she’s going to die anyway”. After speaking to her oncologist she was ordered to drain the fluid. After that she was rude to us the entire time. She was supposed to follow up with CVS for a prescription she did not. While my mom was there she was supposed to have her second iron infusion that was supposed to a push IV and done in 5 minutes. She cancelled all the oncologist orders and put my mom on a drip for an hour so when we went to infusion center everything was screwed up in the system and instead of being there for 10 minutes it took over an hour for the nurses to correct the orders. Beyond rude. Next she had a port put in and was just semi under and all of the tech and doctor were in there talking about their night about before and gossiping. My mom started to have a panic attack with her mask and they were ignoring her. Finally they saw her and removed mask and she told them how unprofessional they were and when she was finish a nurse came over and went over the top nice because they knew what happened in the OR. Talk about completely unprofessional

If I could have given a minus star I would have. I spent three days there last September and was misdiagnosed on just about everything. You would get better treatment at a veterinary hospital.
