About Putnam Hospital, part of Nuvance Health

Their inpatient program is for clients who need immediate stabilization to keep themselves and others safe. This team can provide crisis intervention services like psychiatric evaluations, medication management, recreational therapy, and group therapy to help clients find relief and stability.

Once clients stabilize, they may move into the outpatient program, which allows them to attend treatment during the day and return home at night. The treatment plan they follow will be based on their own needs, but some of the services available here include individual and group counseling, classes related to addiction and recovery, social skills training, and dialectical behavioral therapy. If clients need to take medicine to treat their condition, they’ll work with a psychiatrist to manage those prescriptions. Most clients attend outpatient treatment five days a week for up to six weeks.

While some former clients rank this facility highly, one client was disappointed to find that their doctor left and they were never assigned to another provider. They wished patient loyalty was higher and urged for better communication.

I recently had knee surgery at Patnam Hospital’s Ambulatory Surgery Center, and I can’t praise the team enough for the outstanding care I received from start to finish. From the moment I walked in, I was treated with kindness, professionalism, and genuine compassion. Every single person, nurses, anesthesiologist, and my surgeon, went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable and informed about each step of the process. The care after surgery was just as phenomenal. The staff made sure I was comfortable, checked in frequently, and were incredibly helpful, sweet, and attentive. I truly felt supported and cared for, which made what could have been a scary experience so much easier. Thank you to the entire team for making me feel safe, comfortable, and well cared for. You are a truly wonderful group of people, and I am so grateful for everything you did for me.

Accepted Insurance

Putnam Hospital, part of Nuvance Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Clients in rehab aftercare programs receive a customized portfolio of services designed to promote their sustained sobriety. These clients have completed high-level treatment, are typically exiting detox and/or intensive inpatient care and are reintegrating into their home, workplace, and community. Rehab aftercare services address addiction disease as a chronic condition requiring continuing care. Clients typically work with case managers and recovery teams to access necessary resources, such as peer coaching and 12 step program induction support.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Introduced in 1983, motivational interviewing is a method to help clients commit to change. It's based on the philosophy that change is hard, and clients must explore their own options and come to their own conclusions rather than receive warnings or advice from the therapist.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Absolutely horrible the worst service I’ve ever ever come across in the hospital. We had a wonderful nurse. We had a doctor come in who actually wasn’t even a doctor. He was a nurse practitioner. He didn’t even look at my son‘s head injury, which yes it was a previous head injury, but I believe it healed the wrong way he went to the hospital in Poughkeepsie and got a completely different diagnosis. This guy wouldn’t even give my son a CAT scan. He didn’t want nothing to do with it. My son was not looking for pain medication. He does not take pain medication. He has a huge bump in the back of his head and now we found out it is a cervical fractured That healed improperly. Save yourself the time and frustration and do not go to this hospital. We did not even see a doctor. We literally saw a nurse practitioner, and the nurse himself was surprised that we did not see a doctor.. In bedside manner is out the door. I wish I remembered this man’s name because he was the absolute worst. He had no bedside manner whatsoever.

Response from the owner
Lindsey - we’re very sorry to hear about this experience, especially given the serious nature of the concerns raised. Feeling unheard or dismissed during a visit—particularly when it involves a possible injury—is deeply troubling. This feedback has been shared with hospital leadership for further review. If you’re open to discussing the situation further, our Patient Experience team can be reached at (845) 230-4751. We appreciate the opportunity to learn more and address concerns directly.

To all Mahopac and Yorktown residents: I am letting you all know to please avoid this hospital! You will not be satisfied at all. Go to New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley, approximately the same distance to Putnam, but WAY better. Here was my experience: I went for a Cat Scan there a while ago. The Cat Scan itself took not even 5 minutes, but getting my results was a complete nightmare. Results were still not on the portal by the time I had my follow up appointment a week later. The morning of my appointment, still nothing. So I called, and they said that apparently, they are “short on radiologists.” How could you be short on radiologists??? What if something medically was seriously going on where a patient needed results right away? Thankfully I was able to get them after they were able to push the reading of them. PS- while registering for my appointment, the lady working there said that there was an error with my primary insurance card. So my mom called up the insurance, and nothing was wrong. Completely banged up system. This is the first and last time I will ever go to Putnam Hospital. Nuvance Health Sucks!!

Response from the owner
We’re sorry to hear about the difficulties described regarding scheduling, communication, and delays in receiving results. Timely access to diagnostic information and a smooth registration process are essential, and we regret that this experience fell short. Your feedback has been shared with hospital leadership for further review. If you'd like to speak with someone directly, our Patient Experience team can be reached at (845) 230-4751. We appreciate you taking the time to share these concerns.

To the ER staff & the staff on 4 North.... Our gratitude for the love & care you gave our mother (Frances LoMonaco) will be in our hearts forever. Your professionalism & perpetual diligence to make, what became her last days, so peaceful was heartwarming. While it certainly was a group effort, we would especially like to thank Dr Samantara, nurses: Sam, Jennifer and Myglide. Not to leave out all the Aids, Respiratory & PT that also showed their love & gentle care. Personal hygiene was still maintained despite her inability to speak for herself. Not enough is ever mentioned about Dietary who worked hard to please her diminishing taste buds & Custodial staff who kept her room spotless. Administration should be proud to have them representing Putnam Hospital. Our love & thanks, Her daughters, Maria & Debbie

Response from the owner
Maria and Debbie, thank you for sharing such a meaningful and compassionate message. We’re truly honored to know that the team at Putnam Hospital helped bring peace and comfort during such a difficult time. Your kind words will be shared with Dr. Samantara, the staff on 4 North, and all those mentioned — including dietary, custodial, and therapy teams. It means so much to know their compassion made a difference. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

As is widely known, do not go to Putnam Hospital unless you have no other choices due to an emergency or if you're seeing a specialist like Dr. Twist OBGYN, or Dr. Saidi, Gastroenterologist. Maybe Northwell can fix this place, which is so needed for Putnam County.

Response from the owner
Maria - thank you for sharing this feedback. We understand how important it is for the community to have confidence in the care available close to home. We’d welcome the opportunity to hear more about your concerns. If you’d like to speak directly with someone, our Patient Experience team can be reached at (845) 230-4751. Your comments have also been shared with hospital leadership as part of our ongoing efforts to improve.

This review is regarding my experience at Putnam Hospital's Reed 4 Psychiatric Unit. It is not a healing environment. It’s a billing warehouse disguised as psychiatric care. I would never recommend this place to anyone. I was kept there for several months without a legitimate diagnosis. There was no individual therapy, no psychoeducation, no meaningful check-ins—just five-minute “rounds” from a psychiatrist every few days. His only concern was whether I could manage to say “yes” or “no” to scripted questions—even though I was so heavily medicated I could barely think or speak. No one ever asked me to explain my symptoms or history. They made assumptions and medicated accordingly—without context, without questions, and without consent. Some nurses were openly rude, dismissive, and unkind. There was no informed consent. I was not offered alternatives or the option to decline medication. I am convinced that the only way treatment would be reconsidered were if I had a life-threatening reaction. That is not care. That is coercion. Dosing was reckless. As a 100-something lb woman, I was given the same regimen as much larger patients. No adjustments. No oversight. Side effects were ignored or downplayed. If I spoke up, I was treated as difficult. If I stayed quiet, they treated my discomfort as a symptom to medicate away. They even confiscated my only bra—which had no underwire—and never provided a replacement. I had no family to bring me one, so I spent months in oversized, revealing scrubs with no support or coverage. It wasn’t about safety. It was about control. And it was humiliating. Basic hygiene items—like shampoo, soap, and conditioner—had to be specifically requested, and even then, staff would hand out the absolute minimum. I might get one tiny bottle of shampoo and conditioner even though I have long hair and clearly needed more. It felt deliberately stingy, like they were rationing supplies in a crisis, except this was a hospital stay that likely billed tens of thousands of dollars. For the amount being charged, the least they could have done was provide enough materials to wash your body properly. Instead, you’re left begging for soap and toothpaste. It was degrading. The unit is small, cold, cramped, and stifling, with no direct sunlight, and patients are never given access to fresh air. The unit has a short hallway that wraps around but offers extremely limited space for adequate exercise. The environment felt more like a controlled holding space than any kind of therapeutic setting. After discharge, I obtained my medical records—and what I read was alarming. There were notes that seemed incomplete, exaggerated, or misleading, clearly painting a picture that justified keeping me longer than necessary. In my opinion, this appeared more about billing than actual care. I also experienced harassment from other patients, and staff failed to intervene—despite how small the unit is. Safety was not a priority. Neither was dignity. There was no trauma-informed approach, no thorough evaluation for co-occurring conditions, and no genuine care. Just sedation, monitoring, and prolonged confinement. I’m still recovering from the psychological impact of being held here. But the eggs and muffins were decent. That’s it.

Response from the owner
Thank you for sharing this deeply detailed and personal feedback. The concerns described are very serious and do not reflect the standard of care we aim to provide. We understand how important it is for every individual to feel safe, heard, and respected—especially in a behavioral health setting. Your comments have been shared with hospital leadership for further review and reflection. We appreciate you taking the time to raise these issues.

The facility is clean. Staff, nurses, doctor, anesthesiologist, and food was so good. They treated me with the utmost professionalism and care. I would recommend over and over again. Dr. Sittler, Dr. Thakur, Dr. Sheth, nurses - Stacy, Karen, Destiny so caring and efficient. I’ve never had such a wonderful experience like this. They need to be commended on the level of work they put in daily. Thanks a million times.

Response from the owner

Your kind words will be shared with Dr. Sittler, Dr. Thakur, Dr. Sheth, Stacy, Karen, Destiny, and the entire team. It truly means a lot to be recognized — thank you!
