I’ve gone back and forth about writing this review, but I feel it’s important to share my experience with Survivors Week for anyone considering it. If your trauma is lighter or you’re just starting to explore healing, this program might feel supportive. But if you’re carrying significant trauma, I’d advise caution. Some of the advertised activities didn’t happen during my stay. Acupuncture was listed, but the acupuncturist was absent, and I later learned it only involves ear points when available. Goat therapy was also listed but not offered. Horse therapy happened during the animals’ breakfast, so the horses weren’t very engaged. Therapeutic elements varied in how useful they felt. The empty-chair exercise (speaking to the person who harmed you) may work for some, but it wasn’t particularly helpful for me. In one educational talk, a therapist mentioned that EMDR is one of the most effective treatments for trauma while talk therapy is often least effective—yet this program was talk therapy and involved no EMDR. My individual therapist created some challenges for me. In our last session, she wanted to continue through lunch, but the kitchen closes promptly, so when we left briefly to get food on our 15 minute break, she was upset, chastised us, and stormed out. She did apologize later-- but imagine talking about deep trauma and having your therapist yell at you for eating. She also quoted scripture at times and said the Holy Spirit told her to share certain things with me, which made me uncomfortable in a professional therapeutic group setting. Another thing that stood out was how she repeatedly asked us not to “go complain to her boss” and that people have done that to her, but instead to confront her directly if we had an issue. In a trauma program where confrontation can be especially difficult, this didn’t feel like a safe or supportive dynamic. And since the program costs around $5,000, I couldn’t help but worry that if a therapist didn’t like me, I might receive even less support. The week opened up a lot of trauma for me, but I didn’t feel the follow-up care or therapeutic consistency matched the intensity of what surfaced. The aftercare offered was essentially more group retreat classes rather than individualized support. I did take initiative and called to speak with Kristine in admissions to see what aftercare options are, she was extremely helpful throughout the process. Overall, while this program might be a fit for some, I found it lacking in ways that made it difficult and, at times, harmful for my own healing. I will say that the food was great, the other staff members were very nice, especially Shelly-- I hope I'm getting her name right. The Tai Chi person is also wonderful. Kristine is also a gem. The money just wasn't worth it for me and you won't be refunded for advertised activities that don't happen.

I found my experience at Rio retreat to be extremely powerful. I have worked in this field and a number of the educational concepts were known to me already. Nonetheless when I did the experiential work it was powerful and transformative. Just a couple days later I continue to find new insights and connections with the childhood issues that I need help addressing. The staff was remarkably insightful and gifted. The program information was up-to-date and directly relevant to my needs. Intake was easy even though I signed up at the last minute I received a lot of support getting everything taken care of including figuring out transportation etc. etc.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Inpatient rehab is designed primarily for persons in early recovery and those who are exiting detox programs. It's ideal for clients in crisis or at an elevated risk of relapse. Inpatient treatment centers provide housing and meals, allowing clients to focus on their recovery away from distractions and addiction triggers. Clients engage in intensive psychotherapy, and many inpatient programs feature recovery-focused life skills training and/or complementary therapies like meditation, creative arts therapy, and other holistic treatments.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

The initial phase of recovery treatment typically includes 24-hour clinical care in Arizona. This constant supervision ensures a safe detox process, which helps the individual physically stabilize from substance use. Patients will receive medications to curb withdrawal symptoms and cravings, as well as other necessary medical treatment. This period typically lasts up to a week, then the individual will receive medical clearance to begin inpatient or outpatient rehab.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

They would not let me attend even though I am DESPERATE for some mental health help. Absolutely ridiculous to not let people who REALLY need help attend workshops. Now I am COMPLETELY hopeless and just want to DIE. Thanks for nothing Meadows. Do NOT recommend.

Response from the owner
Sandy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story. We know how hard it can be to reach out for help, and we're sorry that one of our workshops wasn't a fit for your current needs. While we believe in the transforming power of these intensive, week-long workshops, they are not a substitute for an inpatient or outpatient treatment program. Our admissions experts can help recommend another program, whether it's one of ours or another provider's. Our goal is always to help people find healing, and we are careful to recommend the right level of care for each unique situation and person's needs.

My review is based on what REMUDA RANCH once stood for. I was here 2x for Anorexia and it WAS a BIBLICALLY BASED treatment center, started by Ward & Kay Keller. They saved my life and taught me how to build a NEW life, WITHOUT an eating disorder. The new owners took GOD out of the equation and there is NO LIFE without God in it. Sad, just SAD to see it now 14 years later....
