Levels of Care

Many clients who enroll in an outpatient rehab program are exiting intensive inpatient care and no longer require such high-level clinical supervision. Outpatient programs typically follow a step-down structure, with treatment frequency and intensity decreasing as clients progress in their recovery journey. Partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) levels of care are the most time-intensive and are designed primarily for clients who have just left inpatient treatment or who are at an elevated risk of relapse.

Inpatient rehab is designed primarily for persons in early recovery and those who are exiting detox programs. It's ideal for clients in crisis or at an elevated risk of relapse. Inpatient treatment centers provide housing and meals, allowing clients to focus on their recovery away from distractions and addiction triggers. Clients engage in intensive psychotherapy, and many inpatient programs feature recovery-focused life skills training and/or complementary therapies like meditation, creative arts therapy, and other holistic treatments.

Treatments

Alcohol use disorder (AUD), also referred to as alcoholism and alcohol addiction, is a chronic condition that involves craving alcohol and an inability to control drinking. A person with AUD must drink greater and greater amounts of alcohol to achieve the same effects and experiences withdrawal symptoms if they stop drinking alcohol. Several evidence-based methods are available to treat AUD through alcohol rehab in Arizona. This treatment can occur on an outpatient or inpatient basis.

Treatment for addiction includes mental health services that are provided while during your stay at the facility. This may be a hospital, clinic, or a luxury treatment center setting. You receive 24-hour support and monitoring by mental health counselors and clinical staff. Most inpatient programs last 30 days, but some can last for two months or longer. Mental health is addressed during treatment via group and individual counseling, addiction education programming, and often recreational activities.

What Embers Recovery advertises—a recovery environment with professional support, structure, and weekly therapy—did not match what I personally experienced and witnessed. The most disturbing issue was the conduct of a care coordinator, Angel Mugizi, toward patients. I personally witnessed behavior that led me to believe this coordinator was communicating with patients outside of a clinical setting and making plans to go on a date and become sexually involved with a patient. Let that sink in. A person in a position of trust and authority appearing to pursue someone who is in treatment and therefore in a vulnerable position is completely unacceptable. Recovery staff should maintain clear, professional boundaries. There should never be a question about whether those boundaries exist. Then there’s the therapy. Weekly individual therapy was advertised, but patients were not consistently receiving weekly individual therapy in my experience. If therapy is being advertised as part of your recovery program, patients should actually receive the therapy they are paying for and relying on. And the lack of structure was absolutely infuriating. There was no meaningful curfew, very little accountability, and patients were allowed to become sexually involved with one another while staff appeared to sit back and do nothing. I personally witnessed situations involving Victoria Jones, a female patient who is also a respiratory therapist, and a married Embers patient that appeared to involve multiple sexual encounters. I also witnessed or became aware of similar situations involving Kaylani Morris and Adrienne Jordan and other patients. What makes me the angriest is that, from what I witnessed, this was not something happening completely behind staff’s backs. Staff had opportunities to intervene, and in my experience, they chose to look the other way. That is not structure. That is not accountability. And that is certainly not the professional recovery environment I believed I was paying for. People enter treatment because they are vulnerable. They need boundaries, supervision, accountability, and an environment that protects their ability to recover. Instead, I witnessed an environment where those boundaries appeared to be treated as optional. I thought I was paying for addiction treatment—not a brothel membership. That statement may sound harsh, but after what I witnessed, it is honestly how I felt. Families make enormous sacrifices to get their loved ones into treatment. Patients walk through the door trusting that the people running the program will protect their recovery and provide the services being promised. That trust should mean something. I am not writing this because I expect perfection. Recovery is difficult, and no treatment program is going to be perfect. I am writing this because there is a massive difference between an imperfect program and one that, in my experience, fails to provide the structure, boundaries, supervision, and support people are being led to expect. If you are considering Embers Recovery, do not just listen to the sales pitch. Ask questions. Get answers in writing. Ask exactly how often patients receive individual therapy. Ask who supervises the facility. Ask what policies exist regarding staff/patient relationships. Ask what happens when patients become sexually involved with one another. Ask about curfews, supervision, and accountability. And most importantly, ask what safeguards are actually in place to protect vulnerable patients. People in recovery deserve better. Their families deserve better. I expected treatment. I expected professionalism. I expected accountability. I expected the environment I was paying for to support recovery. Instead, what I witnessed left me feeling completely deceived and deeply angry. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Embers Recovery to someone I love.
