About Therapeutic Associates Bend Physical Therapy

Therapeutic Associates Central Oregon is a physical therapy facility that treats people recovering from injuries or surgery. It’s located in Bend, Oregon.

While it’s not a substance use disorder (SUD) treatment facility, its staff is trained in understanding pain management and they’re aware of warning signs that a person might be struggling with opioid addiction as a result of prescription medications given after surgery or during the rehabilitation period. This facility specifically works with athletes, individuals recovering from surgery, and those suffering from chronic pain.

Bend, Oregon, like many places in the Pacific Northwest, is surrounded by natural beauty thanks to its location. It is in Oregon’s medical corridor, and is not far from the St. Charles Medical Center. It’s near Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint, and Pine Nursery Park both of which offer plenty of nature based excursions for people to enjoy.

Orthopedic Recovery

Therapeutic Associates is really focused on supporting people who are recovering from physical injuries. This care is provided on an outpatient basis, and in some cases can be accessed through telehealth appointments for people who are further along in their recovery journey.

Most treatment here blends both physical therapy treatment such as stretching and physical activities, with helpful instruction on injury prevention to avoid further physical damage to joints, muscles, or bones. Self management strategies may also be employed to help people continue their recovery journey independently when they’re not at the facility.

Pain Management Support

Because this facility is focused on rehabilitation and care, pain management is part of that level of care. However, pain management can also include education on the dangers of opioid addiction, and prioritize shifting down to weaker prescriptions as mobility improves. Therapeutic Associates Central Oregon accepts most major insurance, as well as self payment options.

I don’t even know where to begin with Laura — she has been a lifeline for me during one of the hardest times of my life. When I first walked into her office after my mastectomy, I couldn’t bear weight on my arms, open a door, or even push down on a soap dispenser. I felt broken, both in body and spirit. Laura saw me, not just as a patient, but as a whole person. She has an incredible ability to connect the mind and body, and she understood that my recovery was about so much more than just regaining movement. With her guidance, compassion, and encouragement, I slowly began to rebuild not only my strength and range of motion, but also my confidence, resilience, and trust in my body again. Through her specialized care, she helped me safely and steadily regain strength and mobility. Today, I have full range of motion without back or chest pain—something I never thought possible in those early days. Beyond the physical progress, Laura supported me through the emotional ups and downs of recovery with kindness and encouragement. Laura’s expertise goes far beyond the physical—she is attuned to the social and emotional impact of breast cancer and helps patients heal from the inside out. Her knowledge of post-mastectomy rehabilitation is second to none, and her dedication to her patients is extraordinary. I honestly don’t know how I would have made it through this chapter without her. The treatment that Laura provides should be prescribed as standard of care for every mastectomy patient. If you are navigating recovery after mastectomy, I cannot recommend Therapeutic Associates highly enough.

Got a referral to Bren Schmidt from an aquaintance and have had amazing results. Bren is a top tier PT. He designed a home program for me to do 3-5 times a week and I saw immediate results. I have had lower back pain for almost 18 years and it was significantly better within the first week. I can already tell the difference in strength when picking things up. Amazing work, thank you Bren!

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

No one wants to go to physical therapy, but if you have go, the staff and therapists at Therapeutic Associates are top notch. I worked with Bren and he got me up and running in about six weeks. If you want to get back to your active life, I highly recommend Bren and the folks at TA.

My recovery experience with Bren and the entire staff at Therapeutic Associates has been positive from start to finish. I saw Bren after knee surgery and he was wonderful at meeting me where I was during each phase. I feel stronger with no pain and have a plan for continued strength building and an active lifestyle going forward.

Chris Cooper and the team at Therapeutic Associates PT are amazing! Chris identified my hip weakness, created a treatment plan that solved my issue, and were positive and encouraging in a way I haven't experienced at other PT groups. They were creative with motivational techniques and exercises to fit me and my lifestyle. They set my expectations from the beginning and they helped me create habits that I will to keep for ever. I couldn't have been more satisfied.

I just started the Therapeutic Yoga Series provided by TAI and co-lead by Laura and Malachi. This has been more impactful, more profound than I could have ever imagined! Buckle up for a long review of why this class is changing my life, and why I recommend it to ANYONE ready to step up their physical activity with intention and community. All of us enrolled in the class are working on a myriad of acute and chronic injuries in all walks of life so we each require different assistance and guidance. The pace is a bit slower at times to give in-depth instruction so we feel “rooted” with the correct postures (and so we don’t further injure ourselves!) But it also has a good rhythm and flow! I’ve done yoga for years without realizing some key fundamentals (both in my posture/form and in my mindset). Our bodies tend to look for shortcuts when being taxed with physical demands, especially when we have tender areas. It is our mind’s duty to pay attention to those shortcuts and realign our body so that we are building stronger networks and more resilient muscles (and prevent future injuries). This process is rewiring neural pathways in our brain and it’s so cool to be able to see it happening! The intention that both Malachi and Laura put into this class is palpable. They not only provide detailed instruction, but they also set the tone for the group to be a community where we can be vulnerable physically and emotionally: we can shake and twist and do the wrong poses, laugh at/with ourselves, and cry. I have never felt such a warmth from fellow yogis as in this class! From here, I feel much more confident to increase my range and stamina in other physical activities because I’m building a safe and strong foundation for my body and mind. So to sum it up, this is a life-changing, confidence-building, community-making, resiliency-forming therapeutic yoga class!

Problem: urinary urgency caused by 3 prostate surgeries. Received a very rapid and significant improvement from the teachings and physical training of Dr. Laura Cooper. Post surgery I thought this was as good as it got and better than many others have - so I put up with the inconveniences. Dr. Cooper’s physio methods improved the pelvic floor and changed my quality of life. Thank you.

Chris Cooper is very experienced and knowedgable. I had an acute ankle sprain and plantar fasciitis. Chris evaluated me and helped identify exercises that would help eliminate the discomfort. I am already feeling better! And, a shout out to Laura Cooper too! She's amazing. Chris is an ankle specialist.
