About Westwind Recovery

Westwind Recovery is an addiction treatment center with multiple sober living homes offering treatment in Los Angeles, California. The treatment center’s mission is to provide a comprehensive, person-centered program that gives you the structure you need for recovery and in turn grows and nurtures a vibrant community. Their behavioral health treatment programs include multiple outpatient intensity levels, beginning with a traditional outpatient program when you struggle with a less severe addiction issue. They work with many of the insurance providers in the local area and will verify your insurance coverage before beginning treatment.

Outpatient Treatment Options in LA

In their outpatient program you receive the necessary treatment while still maintaining your personal and professional responsibilities. An intensive outpatient program offers greater structure and intensity of care, typically including life skills, relapse prevention programs and learning healthier coping skills. Many people can continue their daily responsibilities at work or school while still receiving treatment.

Finally, their partial hospitalization program is the highest level of intensity, during which you receive treatment five days each week for up to six hours every day. You receive the same intensity level of care that you would get in a residential setting while still being able to return home in the evening.

Dual Diagnosis and Holistic Care

They also provide mental health care that addresses your physical and spiritual condition as well. They take your overall health very seriously. This combination allows them to provide care for dual diagnosis when you’re struggling with mental health and substance use disorder at the same time. This provides an individualized and holistic approach, offering the best possible outcomes since these diagnoses typically exacerbate each other and require integrated and simultaneous care.

Their program includes holistic therapy options such as yoga and meditation, exercise therapy, nutritional therapy and massage therapy. It provides a whole person approach to healthcare, recognizing that there is a mind and body connection and you are not just a collection of symptoms.

In early recovery, they find that these holistic therapy approaches are crucial to overcoming challenges. Because they are flexible and gentle, you can easily integrate them into your daily activities for a well-rounded approach to addressing your recovery journey.

I cannot say enough good things about my experience at Westwind Recovery. From the moment I walked through the doors, I felt welcomed, supported, and truly cared for. The staff here are not just highly trained professionals—they are compassionate, patient, and deeply committed to helping each person succeed in their recovery. The program is comprehensive and personalized. They don’t take a “one size fits all” approach; instead, they worked closely with me to understand my specific struggles and goals. The combination of individual counseling, group therapy, educational workshops, and holistic activities (like mindfulness, fitness, and art therapy) gave me tools I will carry with me for life. The environment is safe, comfortable, and free of judgment—exactly what I needed to open up and do the hard work of healing. The staff also provided support for my family, which was invaluable in helping us rebuild trust and understanding. Thanks to Westwind Recovery, I not only found sobriety but also rediscovered a sense of purpose, self-worth, and hope for the future. I truly believe they saved my life, and I will always be grateful for the care and guidance I received here. If you or a loved one is struggling, I cannot recommend Westwind Recovery enough. They don’t just treat addiction—they help you build a new life.

Westwind Recovery truly changed my life. From the moment I arrived, I felt supported, understood, and cared for in a way I hadn’t experienced before. The staff is not only incredibly knowledgeable and professional but also deeply compassionate—many of them are in recovery themselves, which made all the difference. They understood my journey on a personal level and met me where I was with patience and empathy. One of the things that sets Westwind apart is its commitment to long-term recovery. Graduating from the program didn’t mean the support ended. They have an incredible alumni program that truly keeps you connected. I had the opportunity to return as a house manager, and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It gave me a chance to give back, stay grounded in my own recovery, and help others on their path—just like others did for me. Being a house manager at Westwind isn’t just a job—it’s an extension of the healing journey. It keeps you plugged into the community, reinforces accountability, and provides a unique opportunity for growth, both personally and professionally. I’m endlessly grateful for everything Westwind has given me—sobriety, purpose, and a community that feels like family. If you’re looking for a program that doesn’t just help you get sober, but helps you build a new life, this is the place.

I only spent a week at Westwind, so I can't review the program as a whole. I do feel it’s important to share my initial observations to others who might be making a decision for themselves or a loved one. *This program did not feel geared towards adult professionals and it didn't feel like there was much flexibility to accommodate. *If you have a car and want to drive to groups every day, be prepared to search for a 2-hour max parking spot, pay for it, and spend all day stressing about when to refill the meter or move your car. This is very distracting when you're trying to focus on groups and recovery. A place this size should have parking for their clients, period. There are TONS of clients here - I’d guess somewhere between 60-70 and 95% of those clients reside in their sober living houses. I felt like an immediate outsider because I live at my home. When I showed up for group on my first day it was overwhelming, and felt a lot like I was entering my first day of high school with very little guidance. I felt like a random face in a random hallway not knowing which class to go to or how to get there (they have three fairly large groups going on at one time all throughout the day, and your group schedule changes day to day). The groups I attended were okay. Not great. Not terrible. Just okay. Again, I didn't have much time to get familiar with the groups, but I've been in recovery long enough to know the difference between a good group and a lazy one. The gossip between clients was immediate, and it was REAL, and it was pretty much nonstop. The gossip I overhead indicates to me that Westwind is trying to shove way too many clients into their program and pack them into uncomfortably crowded sober living environments. After one tiny slip, which I was open and honest about, they insisted I go to a sober living house otherwise I'd be discharged... THAT DAY. It was an immediate ultimatum that I had only hours to consider. (I have to presume they'd get more money from my insurance, but maybe that's just me being overly cautious of many programs claiming to want to help, but really just profiting off people's suffering). Is Westwind one of those places? I can't say for sure and I'm not saying they are. They claimed to care about my safety, justifying forcing me into sober living, but if I didn't agree to this, it's my ass to the curb. Is that really caring? On a positive note... the core staff members who I dealt with personally were all great... helpful, communicative, and friendly (Stephanie, Jen, Chase). I was able to meet with my therapist one time, and she seemed exceptional. I believe her name was Emily, and I’m sad I won’t be able to continue working with her. I need something more intimate and personalized according to each individual, and sadly this was not that place for me.

Accepted Insurance

Westwind Recovery works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Inpatient rehab provides intensive treatment for clients exiting detox, those in early recovery, and those at an elevated risk of relapse. Unlike outpatient drug rehab, clients receiving inpatient care reside at the facility for the duration of the program. The length of stay may range from two weeks to 18 months or more, depending on the client's needs and the program's design. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive addiction education and recovery-focused life skills training.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) support a client's sustained sobriety as they exit detox or step down from an inpatient program. IOPs are also designed for clients who are at an elevated risk of relapse. Intensive outpatient treatment typically requires clients to engage in a minimum of nine hours of therapy per week, but clients may receive up to 20 therapeutic hours weekly. IOP treatment modalities often combine psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.

12-step icon12-Step

Participants engaged in 12 step programs receive intensive peer coaching (sponsorship) and community support. Spiritual development as a means of achieving psychological and emotional healing and growth is the cornerstone of 12 step recovery, but religious affiliations are not required. Meetings are free, anonymous, and open to the public, though specialized formats are available, including groups for seniors, teens, and family members. Evening, night, and day meetings are conducted year-round in most communities.

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. The length of stay at the detoxification program is determined according to the specific needs of the patient.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image

Military Program

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in California is a method that therapists often use for the effective treatment of substance use disorders. It is based on the principle that substance abuse stems from unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior, which can be changed by helping the individual learn better ways of coping.

While participating in dialectical behavior therapy in California, you'll focus on four key areas of skill development: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. Treatment includes weekly individual and group sessions.

During group therapy, men and women learn to express their emotions openly in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and reduces feelings of social isolation that are often associated with addiction.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

For clients who are struggling with ambivalence toward change, motivational interviewing in California can help strengthen their commitment to change. Using a conversational method, the therapist helps you explore your motivations and empowers you to make the changes you desire.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Substances can prevent the absorption of nutrients and cause damage to your body's systems. Nutrition therapy in California addresses the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are caused by substance abuse.

Recreational therapy is included in alcohol and drug addiction treatment to focus on engaging you in healthy activities that reduce your cravings and improve your overall health and well being. When you participate in group sports, art, or nature walks, you develop new interests and find a meaningful way to spend your time and reduce your cravings.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

I spent 5 months at Westwind and truly had a wonderful experience. The staff was unbelievably warm, compassionate and supportive. The programming was one of the best I’ve seen and I really got the chance to learn more about myself and get back aligned with who I really am sober. I can’t thank the westwind team enough on being there for me during my personal recovery. I definitely recommend this program for anyone in search of healing and empowerment.

I had a great experience at WW. Maia was my primary therapist, but the entire staff and group sessions were beneficial for my mental health. The team was extremely welcoming while also remaining professional and supportive throughout my time enrolled in their program. Maia did a fantastic job of encouraging me to challenge myself and strive to work diligently on recovery. An individual must desire a better life for themselves, but the team at WW can be a strong support system to help along the way. I fully recommend their programs if they are suitable to the individual dealing with mental health or related issues.

Westwind Recovery gave me my start. When I arrived, it was my first time ever trying to get sober. That’s a big thing to say—and an even bigger thing to live through. With the guidance, compassion, and structure I found at Westwind, I was able to not only get sober, but stay sober. That foundation has carried me through, and now, nearly a year later, I’m proud to be a house manager here—continuing my recovery by helping others start theirs. The program works because it’s built on real care. The staff are knowledgeable and deeply committed. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed. And the houses themselves are beautiful, welcoming, and set up to help clients feel both at home and inspired to grow. Westwind isn’t just a place I went—it’s a part of who I am now. I’ll always be grateful.

Response from the owner
Thank you so much for sharing your powerful story. We're incredibly honored to have been part of your first steps into sobriety and proud to see how far you’ve come, not just in your own recovery, but now in helping others as a house manager. At Westwind Recovery, we believe in building a real foundation through compassion, structure, and community support, and your journey is a true reflection of that.

It means the world to hear that our staff, programming, and sober living homes made a lasting impact. Thank you for continuing to be part of what makes Westwind special. We’re grateful for you and inspired by your continued growth and leadership.

Do not send your family member here if you want them to find recovery. Highly unprofessional staff. Very dangerous environment filled with individuals who prey on people at their most vulnerable. I repeat DO NOT send your family member here if you want them to recover. One of the worst experiences of my life. Don’t get me started on the insurance fraud. Patients are simply a number. They also give patients discounts for a good google review.

Response from the owner

I was a client at Westwind Recovery from January to May 2025. From the moment I was picked up by Robin until I had my exit interview with Sean, the program manager, I was cared with individualized attention and respect. Taking care of my needs through group and one-on-one therapy. I know that West Wind was central for my recovery, and I would urge anyone who finds themselves in a situation such as mine to inquire about this treatment program. You will find empathetic staff and professionals, not only with deep knowledge about the roots of addiction, but people who underwent similar experiences such as mine. I plan in being an active alumn of Westwind in the future, and I'm grateful to all of them for the unwavering support I received as I was trudging the challenge of addiction. Michael Kagan

Top treatment with people who care. Vinny is an incredible asset to the sober community and to see this flourish and how much they help people is inspiring. The reviews don’t lie!

If you want support and want to get sober, absolutely look at westwind as they are very strong in their clinical programming. I cannot say enough great things about it. Ryan Peterson and Carli Buxbaum are superstars. However, Westwind’s sober living component is far from perfect. It’s actually detrimental to your health. As someone who has experience staying at their Houdini and Laurel Canyon homes, it is not worth going when you have supervisors like Nick Thorsen and, even worse, Anna James. As a client in good standing they lost hundreds of dollars of my personal belongings and misplaced clinical medications without replacing them. They left rat infested furniture in one of the houses and called me during my full time job telling me I was “a toxic resident that didn’t deserve to be sober.” Find a different sober living program at all costs. It isn’t worth your mental well being and it definitely isn’t worth a malpractice lawsuit waiting to happen. You deserve the best. Westwind is NOT the best.

Response from the owner
Thank you for your feedback and for recognizing the strength of our clinical programming and team members like Ryan and Carli. We’re truly sorry to hear that your experience with our sober living fell short. Client safety and well-being are extremely important to us, and we take these concerns seriously. We welcome the opportunity to speak further and address your experience directly, please feel free to reach out to our leadership team.

When I came to Westwind I had a completely damaged sense of family along with everything else, the compassion and understanding that’s giving from the moment you walk in is truly everything. The stafff, classes, the lessons are things i will keep with me forever, I stayed at the Maryland and Hayes house both of which are amazing !

Response from the owner
Thank you for sharing your experience! We're so glad Westwind could help restore your sense of family and provide lasting lessons. Wishing you all the best on your journey!
