About Westwind Recovery

Westwind Recovery is an addiction treatment center with multiple sober living homes offering treatment in Los Angeles, California. The treatment center’s mission is to provide a comprehensive, person-centered program that gives you the structure you need for recovery and in turn grows and nurtures a vibrant community. Their behavioral health treatment programs include multiple outpatient intensity levels, beginning with a traditional outpatient program when you struggle with a less severe addiction issue. They work with many of the insurance providers in the local area and will verify your insurance coverage before beginning treatment.

Outpatient Treatment Options in LA

In their outpatient program you receive the necessary treatment while still maintaining your personal and professional responsibilities. An intensive outpatient program offers greater structure and intensity of care, typically including life skills, relapse prevention programs and learning healthier coping skills. Many people can continue their daily responsibilities at work or school while still receiving treatment.

Finally, their partial hospitalization program is the highest level of intensity, during which you receive treatment five days each week for up to six hours every day. You receive the same intensity level of care that you would get in a residential setting while still being able to return home in the evening.

Dual Diagnosis and Holistic Care

They also provide mental health care that addresses your physical and spiritual condition as well. They take your overall health very seriously. This combination allows them to provide care for dual diagnosis when you’re struggling with mental health and substance use disorder at the same time. This provides an individualized and holistic approach, offering the best possible outcomes since these diagnoses typically exacerbate each other and require integrated and simultaneous care.

Their program includes holistic therapy options such as yoga and meditation, exercise therapy, nutritional therapy and massage therapy. It provides a whole person approach to healthcare, recognizing that there is a mind and body connection and you are not just a collection of symptoms.

In early recovery, they find that these holistic therapy approaches are crucial to overcoming challenges. Because they are flexible and gentle, you can easily integrate them into your daily activities for a well-rounded approach to addressing your recovery journey.

If you want support and want to get sober, absolutely look at westwind as they are very strong in their clinical programming. I cannot say enough great things about it. Ryan Peterson and Carli Buxbaum are superstars. However, Westwind s sober living component is far from perfect. It s actually detrimental to your health. As someone who has experience staying at their Houdini and Laurel Canyon homes, it is not worth going when you have supervisors like Nick Thorsen and, even worse, Anna James. As a client in good standing they lost hundreds of dollars of my personal belongings and misplaced clinical medications without replacing them. They left rat infested furniture in one of the houses and called me during my full time job telling me I was a toxic resident that didn t deserve to be sober. Find a different sober living program at all costs. It isn t worth your mental well being and it definitely isn t worth a malpractice lawsuit waiting to happen. You deserve the best. Westwind is NOT the best.

Accepted Insurance

Westwind Recovery works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab provides intensive treatment for clients exiting detox, those in early recovery, and those at an elevated risk of relapse. Unlike outpatient drug rehab, clients receiving inpatient care reside at the facility for the duration of the program. The length of stay may range from two weeks to 18 months or more, depending on the client's needs and the program's design. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive addiction education and recovery-focused life skills training.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) support a client's sustained sobriety as they exit detox or step down from an inpatient program. IOPs are also designed for clients who are at an elevated risk of relapse. Intensive outpatient treatment typically requires clients to engage in a minimum of nine hours of therapy per week, but clients may receive up to 20 therapeutic hours weekly. IOP treatment modalities often combine psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
12-step icon12-Step
Participants engaged in 12 step programs receive intensive peer coaching (sponsorship) and community support. Spiritual development as a means of achieving psychological and emotional healing and growth is the cornerstone of 12 step recovery, but religious affiliations are not required. Meetings are free, anonymous, and open to the public, though specialized formats are available, including groups for seniors, teens, and family members. Evening, night, and day meetings are conducted year-round in most communities.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. The length of stay at the detoxification program is determined according to the specific needs of the patient.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in California is a method that therapists often use for the effective treatment of substance use disorders. It is based on the principle that substance abuse stems from unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior, which can be changed by helping the individual learn better ways of coping.

While participating in dialectical behavior therapy in California, you'll focus on four key areas of skill development: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. Treatment includes weekly individual and group sessions.

During group therapy, men and women learn to express their emotions openly in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and reduces feelings of social isolation that are often associated with addiction.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

For clients who are struggling with ambivalence toward change, motivational interviewing in California can help strengthen their commitment to change. Using a conversational method, the therapist helps you explore your motivations and empowers you to make the changes you desire.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Substances can prevent the absorption of nutrients and cause damage to your body's systems. Nutrition therapy in California addresses the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are caused by substance abuse.

Recreational therapy is included in alcohol and drug addiction treatment to focus on engaging you in healthy activities that reduce your cravings and improve your overall health and well being. When you participate in group sports, art, or nature walks, you develop new interests and find a meaningful way to spend your time and reduce your cravings.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Do not send your family member here if you want them to find recovery. Highly unprofessional staff. Very dangerous environment filled with individuals who prey on people at their most vulnerable. I repeat DO NOT send your family member here if you want them to recover. One of the worst experiences of my life. Don’t get me started on the insurance fraud. Patients are simply a number. They also give patients discounts for a good google review.

I was a client at Westwind Recovery from January to May 2025. From the moment I was picked up by Robin until I had my exit interview with Sean, the program manager, I was cared with individualized attention and respect. Taking care of my needs through group and one-on-one therapy. I know that West Wind was central for my recovery, and I would urge anyone who finds themselves in a situation such as mine to inquire about this treatment program. You will find empathetic staff and professionals, not only with deep knowledge about the roots of addiction, but people who underwent similar experiences such as mine. I plan in being an active alumn of Westwind in the future, and I'm grateful to all of them for the unwavering support I received as I was trudging the challenge of addiction. Michael Kagan

I completed 4 months of outpatient treatment. I was not given any after care planing. I put together my own after care treatment the day before my discharge date. I relapsed a month and a half later. After completing detox this past week I tried to re-admit to Westwind and denied me for being an opiate addict stating I'm too high risk. They lost their license for addiction treatment. Stay away. Don't shoot your wounded.

I have been to A LOT of treatment centers - good, bad, mediocre. It's not something I necessarily advertise as an accomplishment, but I do think it qualifies this review. Believe me when I say, Westwind is perhaps the best Intensive Outpatient (IOP) program I have every completed. It's well-organized, the groups are interactive, and the people truly care. When you've been in and out of treatment centers as much as I have, you get used to a tough-love ethos. You get used to being treated like a child, like you shouldn't have a say in your treatment plan, your aftercare goals, never-mind anything in-between. Practitioners subscribe to the same stigma you face on the outside. And while the fear of being patronized keeps you in line during your treatment, it doesn't arm you with the necessary tools to live self-sufficiently after discharge. At Westwind, I was treated like a person with the problem of addiction, not an addict. That's an important distinction, and it's hard to find. The staff have managed to foster a real sense of community among patients - also hard to find. Kiinicki, who single-handedly coordinates the night track program, made us all feel like we had something worthy to contribute. They knew each patient beyond just our names - they took an active interest in our lives and encouraged vulnerability. I am naturally guarded, perhaps because of my extensive treatment history, but Kiinicki made me feel comfortable enough to start opening up. They applauded my progress week over week. I felt seen for the first time in a long time. I didn't expect to get all that I did out of Westwind. I came in jaded, but between Kiinicki and my therapist, Maia, I didn't want to leave by the end. Both of these amazing, empathetic people helped me to see my potential. They listened to my opinions. They encouraged me to participate in my own recovery, and they tailored their approach to meet my needs. I can't say enough about how grateful I am for these two. If you have the privilege of attending Westwind's night track IOP program, Kiinicki WILL have your back. Maia's groups will have you thinking and acting differently. You'll continue to feel supported even after you leave. I cannot recommend Westwind enough (as long as Kiinicki and Maia are still there, holding down the fort!).

Kiinicki, I am writing this letter with the deepest gratitude and admiration for the unwavering dedication and compassion you bring to your work at West Wind. Your presence in the treatment program is not just a role; it is a profound source of strength, hope, and humanity for those who walk through its doors. From the very beginning, it was clear that you go above and beyond—not just for me, but for everyone you encounter. Your kindness is not performative; it is real, it is felt, and it leaves an imprint on the hearts of those fortunate enough to cross your path. You do a job that many don’t fully understand, a job that often goes unrecognized, yet you pour your soul into it with the kind of empathy that can’t be taught. That is rare. That is invaluable. The care you provide isn’t just about checking boxes or following protocols. You meet people where they are, with no judgment—only understanding. You remind us that healing isn’t just about treatment plans; it’s about human connection, about being seen, heard, and reminded of our own worth, even when we struggle to see it ourselves. I want you to know that your work does not go unnoticed. Even on the days that feel heavy, even in the moments where exhaustion creeps in, I hope you remember that what you do matters. It matters deeply. You have changed lives—including mine. I sincerely hope that leadership recognizes the true asset they have in you. If they haven’t yet, I urge them to take this letter to heart. West Wind is incredibly fortunate to have someone like you on their team—a humanitarian in the truest sense of the word. Thank you, Kiinicki, for being the light in so many people’s darkest moments. The world needs more people like you, and I am beyond grateful to have met you. With deep appreciation, Angel

I spent 4 months at Westwind, and my experience there was absolutely amazing. From the moment I walked in, I felt supported, respected, and truly cared for. The staff is incredibly compassionate, knowledgeable, and professional, going above and beyond to make sure every individual gets the care they need. The program itself is well-structured and comprehensive, offering a perfect balance of therapy, education, and community support. The therapists were phenomenal, helping me address not only my addiction but also the underlying issues that contributed to it. Group sessions were engaging and uplifting, creating a sense of unity and understanding among everyone there. What really stood out to me was the sense of community and acceptance. Everyone, from the staff to my peers, created an environment where I could be vulnerable and grow. I never felt judged or alone. It’s clear that the staff genuinely cares about your recovery journey, and they celebrate every milestone with you. The facility itself was clean, comfortable, and provided all the resources needed for recovery. The extracurricular activities and holistic approaches, like yoga and mindfulness sessions, were incredible additions that helped me reconnect with myself on a deeper level. After 4 months, I left Westwind not just sober but with a renewed sense of purpose and a solid foundation for my recovery journey. I cannot recommend this place enough to anyone seeking help. It changed my life, and I’ll forever be grateful for my time there. If you’re looking for a treatment center that truly cares and wants to see you succeed, this is the place to be. Thank you Westwind, for giving me the tools and support to rebuild my life!

I would like to express my opinion regarding West Wind Recovery. My son who is in addiction recovery was at West Wind Fuller House in their PHP program. He was accepted while he had insurance. When his insurance ran out they did get him a scholarship to remain there for an extended time. My problem with them is that without giving him any notice, when the scholarship ran out he was told he had to leave immediately, they needed his bed. I know that someone might think that it’s time to go when the money runs out. But, I think they should have called him in before this to let him know that they were going to kick him out. We live in Pennsylvania, a long way from California. Blake was smart enough to have a few people he had met, also in recovery, who had told him if he ever needed anything to call for help. He did contact a very kind man who came and picked him up to stay overnight at his place that was safe. Meanwhile here at home and we had no clue this was going on. They put a recovering addict that was sober for only a few moths out in the street miles from home. I want to mention that Blake is a type one diabetic who is insulin dependent as well. He had no where to go and no family close by. They didn’t care at all. When we finally got him home he had blisters on his feet not to mention he couldn’t walk his feet were so swollen. I can’t mention how wrong this was. They could have at least given him at least a few days notice to leave and find somewhere to go. This place only wants your money and if that runs out you are GONE !!!! I am so proud of Blake that he was smart enough to contact someone he trusted to pick him up until we could get him home. I am just thankful that God directed him to do the right thing and not start using drugs again or go to skid row. Just be careful if you or your loved one go to this place make sure your money doesn’t run out or you will be out. We had to take Blake to the emergency room when he got home, his feet were so bad. How dare that put a recovering addict who is insulin dependent out in the street. WATCH OUT FOR THIS PLACE!!!!
