About Clarity Mental Health and Recovery

Clarity Mental Health and Recovery has a long history of treating mental health and substance use disorders, including co-occurring disorders. Their Bellingham, Washington, clinic sees addictions as an attempt to soothe pain to properly treat addiction one needs full person healing. To achieve this goal for a wide audience, they utilize a wide range of approaches.

With a number of different treatment methods and groups available, they offer a high degree of flexibility and customization. Then there’s the location, which puts you within reach of parks and beaches as well as Bellingham Bay. All these things considered, it’s an environment where anyone can feel at home.

LBTQIA+Support

To that point, take a look at the different support groups they offer in their treatment programs. Many focus on certain issues of skills. The LGBTQIA+ group serves as a safe place for members of those communities to come together, receive support, and work with one another on their challenges.

Groups like these reflect how we all experience addiction differently, but we can still come together through other aspects of our lives. These shared perspectives can lead to new friendships and broaden your recovery support system considerably.

Continued Recovery Step Down

This location’s relapse prevention program is designed partly as a continuation of treatment. It’s focused on further developing the skills you were introduced to during therapy. A core tenet of this relapse prevention course is mindfulness training, which also has a separate group for those interested.

Not everyone is ready to face sobriety on their own when a program ends. If you’re one of those people, feeling uncertain or trepidatious, a step down solution like this could be for you.

Meeting Alcohol and Drug Information School Needs

If you’re court ordered to attend ADIS, you may find this location’s program fits into your schedule better than others. That’s because their ADIS is conducted remotely over video conference and telephone, allowing you to participate anywhere you are in the world. The added flexibility makes the task much less daunting.

Clarity accepts several commercial insurance plans. Be sure to confirm coverage with their office.

I first came to Clarity seeking SUD services to control my drinking. I worked with Max Whipple III, who is very friendly, understanding, and knowledgeable about addiction. He gave me some great tips and tools that I use daily. As time went on, it became apparent that I needed more mental health focused services and I had to switch to a dual-certified counselor to deal with symptoms. I am now working with Kelly Frost, and he has helped me greatly on my road to recovery. He is very in-tune with what services are available in Bellingham, which services accept which insurances, and of course he knows all about addiction, suffering, and mental health issues as well. He compassionately worked with me through my long-held traumas, as well as newer ones. He pushes me to be the best person I can be, to stay active and connected with the local community, and he helped me reconnect to my spiritual side which has brought me a great deal of serenity. I will forever be grateful for the tools I have learned in coming here, and I look forward to my sessions every week.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. This level of care is for the substance abuser that may not be fully substance dependent; however, the goal is still abstinence to stop the progression toward a pathological addiction.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs. This level of care is for the substance dependent individual that has an ability to interrupt the progression of their addiction in an outpatient setting.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs support clients as they focus on maintaining their sobriety after intensive (often inpatient) treatment. These programs adhere to a model of life-long recovery, addressing addiction disease as a chronic, relapsing condition. Rehab aftercare services vary widely based on the specific and evolving needs of the client, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, and 12 step program induction. Clients, case managers, and care teams typically collaborate on long-term care plans.
12-step icon12-Step
12 step programs support participants' psychological, spiritual, and emotional development as integral to sustained recovery. Though 12 step recovery programs are based on the belief in a non-denominational higher power, religious affiliation is not required. Group meetings are paper-led, anonymous, free, and available daily, including on holidays, in most communities. Peer sponsors selected by the participants provide one-on-one coaching and support. Specialized formats are widely available, including programming for youth, seniors, and families.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Effective drug rehab in Washington integrates care for the whole person, offering comprehensive solutions to addiction. Treatment methods address mental, physical, and relational aspects of substance abuse.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life. These sessions are designed to address a patient's specific recovery needs.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

The goal of trauma therapy is to help you heal from the aftereffects of a traumatic experience. Your therapist will provide you with a safe and supportive space to process these trauma memories and develop better coping strategies that enhance your emotional resilience.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

It's been weeks after I asked for my paperwork and they haven't faxed it. Such irresponsible people. Save your time and money and don't come here because they are inefficient and distracted.

My partner and I started seeing Kelly when our relationship was on the brink of collapse. He exposed us to many helpful tools to improve our communication and facilitated important conversations that deepen our understanding of one another. We appreciate his background in positive psychology and the solutions-based counseling approach that he uses during our sessions.

This place rocks. Kelly and Ashley are both incredibly supportive and knowledgeable professionals. They have both helped me wrangle my anxiety and work through complex trauma and their support has already greatly improved my quality of life in just about 6 months. I am grateful to have found such a solid organization.

I can't speak highly enough of the quality and efficacy of Clarity's offerings. Their staff is incredibly skilled, has a diverse skill set, and very easy to get along with. They have a curated team to help people get to where they want to go in a wholistic manner. The resources they offer in their accessible groups are like gold. I've been on the road to healing and wellness for a long time, and I've never come across a place that is so completely, thoroughly well stocked to support me. Can't recommend their services hightly enough.

I called Clarity Mental health & recovery to get two different evals that they stated over the phone could be done. They put me through counseling that wasn't court excepted how could they do this to one of there clients. Don't ever go to this place please thoroughly select a location especially if it's court ordered crooks. NO STAY AWAY!

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Hi Corey. Our services are all state certified, which includes our mental health, substance abuse and domestic violence programs. If your evaluations were court mandated, then that judge by law needs to accept your treatment program. Please reach out by email so we can help you find resolution to this concern with the court system. I am more than happy to reach out to your attorney or directly to the court in order to find out what the issue is. Kelly@claritymhr.com

When I showed up, I was an angry and insecure alcoholic. Now I'm a mindful artist. CBT, Parts work, EMDR and mindfulness are Kelly's specialities.

I cannot give Clarity a better review, especially my counselor, Max Whipple. I have been with them for going on two years now. This is my first REAL long-term counselor/therapist, and I truly believe that I wouldn't be as far along in my business as well as my progress if it wasn't for Max and his team. My biggest concern with counseling was the overarching feeling of insincerity; two-bit counselors listening to you talk for however long, then cutting them a check without any real help. (I have had those). This is NOT that place. Max and his team of professionals are considerate, knowledgeable, and genuinely want to help you, if you are ready to start helping yourself. Two thumbs up, plus five stars.
