About Columbia University Irving Medical Center Smithers Center

Columbia University Irving Medical Center Smithers Center, in New York, New York, provides outpatient care for adolescents and adults experiencing co-occurring addiction and mental illness. They offer ambulatory detox and medication assisted treatment for qualifying clients.

You’ll get a medical and mental health assessment and personalized care plan tailored to your unique needs. You’ll also engage in individual, group, and family counseling drawing on proven methods like CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing. I also like that they offer specialized services for couples, families, and teens.

They also prioritize relapse prevention by taking a whole person approach to healing. In addition to medical and psychological approaches to treatment, they also offer holistic therapies. You can learn mindfulness techniques and engage in acceptance based therapies to deal with anger, stress, and trauma.

As a treatment provider in an academic setting, they do a lot of groundbreaking research around the globe to establish innovative new methods in addiction treatment. That’s why it’s not surprising that clients have overwhelmingly positive things to say about the quality of care they received.

Dear Patient Relations Team, I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the services I recently experienced at Columbia University Irving Medical Center/Herbert Irving Pavilion. I have several serious concerns: 1. Lack of Translation Services: I do not speak English, and during my interactions with the hospital, no one offered translation assistance. When I called, I expected support to communicate effectively, but this was not provided, making it very difficult for me to understand or be understood. 2. Unauthorized Changes to My Appointment: My appointment time and doctor were changed without my knowledge or consent. I was not informed or asked for approval, which is unacceptable. 3. Switch to a Nurse Practitioner: My appointment was reassigned from a doctor to a nurse practitioner without my agreement. This change was made without any explanation or discussion with me, and I am not comfortable with it. These issues have caused me significant frustration and inconvenience. I request an explanation for why these problems occurred and what steps will be taken to address them. I also urge the hospital to ensure translation services are available for non-English-speaking patients like me in the future. Please respond to me in writing at this email address, and if needed, you can contact me at my phone number

Doctors are great, staff is atrocious on some of the floors. Checked a family member in for health reasons and even though they’re treating the initial problem the patient had (whos very old) He is getting terrible care and has developed a bunch of other problems being in their care. Not being able to eat for days at a time without anyone realizing, severe bed sores, and infections. You know who figured out all these issues, THE FAMILY-NOT the hospital staff. He’s coming home in worse condition (and now bed ridden) than when he went in. KEEP YOUR FAMILY AWAY FROM THIS HORRIBLE HOSPITAL!!!

My dad is there with endocarditis ... they have him on a gurney in the er for 3 days, there is a woman walking around with covid, and patients sleeping literally 2 Inches away from him... they locked him in bed and he is getting weaker by the minute. They are so overloaded that they kicked all visitors out of the er. They forgot to feed him for 24 hours .... and there is no care being given because he is "admitted" but since there are no beds he can't get treatment
